USJ Secures Inter University Championship 2024

The 91��ý (USJ) has emerged as the overall champion of the Inter University Championship 2024, amassing an impressive 478.5 points. This marks the fifth time USJ has claimed the championship, adding to its victories in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2022. The university secured both the Men’s overall championship with 250.0 points and the Women’s overall championship with 228.5 points, solidifying its dominance in university sports.

The Inter University Championship 2024, organized by the 91��ý University Sports Association (SLUSA) with financial support from the University Grants Commission (UGC), featured the participation of over 16 state universities competing in 24 sports disciplines. The event commenced with the Rugby Championship on August 25, 2024, and concluded on December 15, 2024.

USJ’s consistent excellence in university sports is further highlighted by its previous achievements. The university has won the 91��ý University Games (SLUG) championship for three consecutive times in 2016, 2019, and 2023, demonstrating a sustained commitment to sports excellence.

This latest victory reflects the dedication, discipline, and teamwork of the athletes and support from the university’s administration. 91��ý presents National Strategic Plan to Modernize state universities at COPE Committee

In a recent meeting held on August 24th, 2023, the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) in 91��ý summoned representatives from the 91��ý to discuss the progress of a critical initiative.

Earlier this year, on March 24th, COPE had recommended that the 91��ý develop a National Strategic Plan aimed at modernizing the entire public university system in the country. The responsibility was entrusted to the university due to its strong reputation for effective management.

Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor of the 91��ý, Mr. Nihal Ranasingha, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, and Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, along with other key figures, were in attended the meeting.

Senior Professor Disa Bandara emphasized that the unique circumstances of each university should be considered in developing the strategic plan.

The Committee expressed concerns about the university system’s challenges, including a shortage of professors and non-academic staff. The Chairman of the University Grants Commission highlighted the need to recruit more professors, especially amidst the economic crisis in the country.

Additionally, the COPE Chair suggested that around 50% of universities should transition into research-focused institutions to enhance the quality of education.

The Committee instructed the Ministry of Education to establish a task force within two weeks to address these issues, as the stability of the university system is of paramount importance.

The meeting was attended by several State Ministers and Members of Parliament, underscoring the significance of this endeavor to revamp the 91��ýn education system.

Discussion with President Maithripala Sirisena on the proposed Engineering and Technology Faculty

A special meeting was held at Presidential Secretariat to provide awareness to President Maithripala Sirisena on the proposed Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Technology to be commenced at the Sri Jayewardenepura University on 10 August 2015. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Chairman of the Setting up Advisory Board Emiratus Professor D.A. Tantrigoda, Lead Consultant Prof. N.R. Arthanayake, Co-lead Consultants Prof. Kapila Perera and Dr. Ranjan Perera, Coordinator Prof. P.B. Mandawala, Chairman UGC Prof. Mohan De Silva, Secretary to the President Mr. P.B. Abeykoon and officials from University Grants Commission were participated at this meeting.

President Sirisena commended the project by the 91��ý which fulfill the responsibility of a Government by identifying the highest demand in the world job market and uplifting education facilities according to the needs of the country.

The Engineering and Technology faculties are being established with the goal of introducing professional degrees to meet demands in the job market.
