Project 01 鈥� Mathudhara

The project 鈥淢athudhara鈥� was organized with the aim of enhancing maternal health and welfare of the mothers in Walawwatta area. Accordingly, an awareness programme regarding the maternal health with the collaboration of MOH officers In Hanwella was held following a religious programme organized to enhance the spiritual health of the mothers. At the end of the programme, a nutrition hampers were distributed among the participated mothers.

Project 02 鈥� Colouring Hearts

鈥楥olouring Hearts鈥� project was organized with the theme 鈥淎 drug free country鈥�.听 The key objective of the project was to reduce the likelihood of drug use among the villagers. Accordingly, drug prevention program was conducted at the first phase of the project for parents of the students and senior students of Pahala Hanwella Secondary school with collaboration of National Dangerous Drugs Control Board. The second phase of the project was aimed at encouraging primary school students to attend the school. A series of activities were conducted including an art competition, essay competition and a grade five model paper discussion to motivate the students to attend the school regularly.

Project 03 鈥� Eyes on Diabetes

鈥楨yes on Diabetes鈥� project was organized with the aim of enhancing the awareness of general public regarding Diabetes; a chronic disease everywhere. Accordingly, Diabetic prevention programme was conducted for the villagers of Walawwatta area and for the students above the age 10. National Diabetes Center in Rajagiriya provided the necessary technical support to conduct the programme. The programme increased the awareness among the people on the disease and a checkup on the sugar level of the participants was also carried down.

Project 04 鈥� Isurumath Hetakata Ran Aswanu

This project was aimed at distributing commercial plants including pepper, mango, coconut, brinjols, chilli etc. for selected low income earned families in Walawwatta area thereby helping them to enhance their poor economic conditions by moving to an extra income source with a home cultivation.

Project 05 鈥� Giving donations to pre-school

The project was aimed at encouraging enrollment to nursery education in Walawwatta village. Accordingly, the project donated basic requirements for nursery education such as school bags, school shoes, water bottles, lunch boxes, books and other stationary to the nursery students of Pahala Hanwella Junior School and a series of events were organized to enhance the positive attitudes of the students to come school regularly.

Project 06 鈥� Athwelak

The project 鈥淎thwelak鈥� was organized focusing on boosting the opportunities for the education of the students in Walawwatta area by distributing stationary packs among the students of Pahala Hanwella Secondary School.

Project 07 鈥� Literacy Enhancement Programme

A workshop for grade 2-5 students of Pahala Hanwella Primary school was conducted with the aim of enhancing the literacy among the students and motivating them to attend the school regularly. Accordingly students coordinated the programme to improve the literacy in all three languages among the students focusing more on weak and needy students.

Project 08 鈥� Colouring Dreams

The project 鈥淐olouring Dreams鈥� successfully completed colour washing of the school buildings of Pahala Hanwella Junior School. The project was able to deliver a visible impactful experience to the underprivileged community of Walawwatta area.

What is an Abortion?

It the process of removing a fetus before 28 weeks of pregnancy; which is currently a sensational but serious topic of discussion debated on socio-cultural and religious forums.

An abortion could take place due to both natural and intentional influences; the latter being the complex one since it is illegal, unsafe and 鈥榰nrighteous鈥� according to local socio-political norms, hence creating a need for education, awareness and serious discussion of the matter in order to avoid such instances.

What qualifies as an illegal, unsafe abortion?

According to the legal system in 91传媒, an abortion is recognized on legal forums only if the pregnancy is to affect the mother鈥檚 life.听 All conditions beyond this realm are considered illegal. Thus an illegal, unsafe or rather 鈥榰njust鈥� abortion is one which is conducted with no medical nor natural reasoning but one that is purely based on one鈥檚 own personal choice influenced by either the pregnant lady itself or other external socio-cultural forces.

Even though the law at present does not acknowledge the mother鈥檚 educational, social or psychological position which may drive them towards a decision as such, there is an ongoing debate which favors this rule to be reconsidered and altered up to a certain extent. However since no such measures are legalized as yet, we should be aware of the consequences that entail an illegal abortion.

Why are illegal abortions 鈥榰nsafe鈥�?

• Illegal abortions are conducted in secret at unauthorized institutions which most of the time would not be equipped with a qualified team of medical officers capable of performing such a sensitive operation.
• Entrusting the鈥� black market鈥� with such great responsibility could result in fatal conditions such as, profuse bleeding or unbearable pain due to negligence, germs entering the bloodstream and creating further complications such as Septicemia and quite frequently even death.
• Many aspects are taken into consideration when conducting even the most simplest of operations generally. We ensure that the environment and equipment are free of germs and other bacteria etc. Therefore it is questionable if such standards are maintained at substandard institutions as such.
• On the long run, these could even lead to STD鈥檚 if the equipment are not fully sterilized.

Hence it is clear that avoiding such uneducated decisions are the better option. Thus it is important that the youth are aware of reproductive health.

What if my relationship is a 鈥榙one deal鈥�?

Even if you believe your relationship strong enough to stand the test of time, avoid extreme physical intimacy and if by any chance it does transcend to physically intimate levels, use protective measures.

If however you do conceive a child, encounter the matter at its earliest stages because the more time passes, the more complicated your situation will grow into; therefore speak to the necessary people and be aware of what your options are.

TalentZ 2016 – the talent show organized by the students of the Faculty was held on the 22nd of December 2016, marking the end of their Orientation program. This event provided a platform for aspiring engineering undergraduates to showcase their talents while bonding with each other and working together as one united team.

The show commenced with the arrival of Dr. Akila Subasinghe, Dean of the Faculty, Heads of Departments, Dr. Chamitha de Alwis, Dr. K.M.C. Konthesingha and Dr. M. Mohamed, Prof. U.G.A. Puswewala, senior lecturers and staff members of the Faculty. Following the University Anthem, the 鈥淣elum Kuluna鈥� inspired oil lamp was lit by the invitees, who were warmly welcomed by students.
Prof. Sampath Amarathunge, Vice Chancellor of the University found time to grace the occasion despite his tight schedule and addressed the gathering, expressing his pleasure to witness the creativity and talents of the students of the Faculty. He further elaborated that the Faculty of Engineering is one of his dreams, which was made a reality.

Under disco lights in the beautifully decorated hall, the evening saw some electric performances by students. Everyone had a good laugh watching the dramas and role plays that unfolded on the stage. The hall reverberated with songs both exhilarating and sonorous, capturing the audience and making them feel ecstatic.

Dr. Akila Subasinghe, Dean of the Faculty addressed the gathering and praised the students for putting on a great show that surpassed his expectations. He also mentioned the importance of continuing to work harmoniously to uphold the name of the Faculty, as well as the University.
The evening concluded with one last song that got the audience on their feet cheering and singing along with the performers. Everyone from singers, actors, musicians, announcers, dancers, coordinators and the ones who designed props and decorations were overjoyed to see their enthusiasm and hard work resulting in such a successful show. They also saw this as an opportunity to express their gratitude towards the Faculty and the University.

Japura Career Fair & Workshop Series organized by the CSDS offers a many job opportunities and internships to the undergraduates as well as to the graduates who are interest in the cooperate world. Through the workshop series undergraduates are given a thorough knowledge on leadership, personnel grooming, cv writing etc.
Moreover, the CSR projects such as ‘Donate Happiness’ are specially organized to enhance unity among the students.

Projects and programs conducted by the CSDS of USJP are initiated with the intention of developing and improving soft skills of the students as a value in addition to their university degree.

For an example, the program ‘Evening for Leisurely Talk‘ is conducted to develop English Speaking abilities of the undergraduates. A number of workshops are also designed mainly to improve soft skills such as leadership skills, communication skills, team work, problem solving abilities and to build up the confidence

The specialty of the CSDS is, not only the undergraduates are benefitted from this society, as the society expands beyond the university premises through the project ‘Arunella’ offering a valuable opportunity to the school children to enhance their soft skills.

Sahaja Shakthi Inborn talent club is the subcommittee which is implemented by the CSDS to develop the inborn talents of undergraduates. The main purpose of this is to enhance the aesthetic skills such as music, Singing, dancing, painting among the undergraduates to perform their capabilities in the University. 鈥橲ahaja Shalthi Talent Show鈥� is one of the large scale annual event organized by the CSDS.

Many larger scale projects will be organized by the CSDS of the 91传媒 along with the Career Guidance Unit for the sheer purpose of moulding undergraduates into productive youths with positive knowledge, skills and attitudes to serve the country.
