Tharindu Fernando, a thrird year Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BIS) Honors undergraduate at the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce has won the Best Startup Award (Central Province) at the prestigious SLASSCOM National Ingenuity Awards 2024.

The SLASSCOM National Ingenuity Awards recognize outstanding achievements in the 91´«Ă˝n IT industry. This recognition is for his innovative startup, “IdeaCipher”, a company he registered in his second year. IdeaCipher has a number of revenue-generating mobile apps each with over 100,000 downloads.

Tharindu’s achievement highlights the Department of Information Technology’s as well as Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce’s commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among its students. The Bachelor of Business Information Systems program equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field of information technology, and his success is a testament to the programs effectiveness.

, 91´«Ă˝ has received two awards at the Institution of Engineers (IESL) techno2023 exhibition and competition held at BMICH from October 20th to 22nd. This exhibition organized by the IESL, 91´«Ă˝ made a platform for groundbreaking innovations and a showcase for technological advancements. Techno-2023, International Technology and Engineering Exhibition is an exhibition for all construction and allied Industries stakeholders. Techno 2023 is one of the largest platforms in 91´«Ă˝ to mingle and exchange ideas for the mutual benefit of almost all the parties related to Engineering and Technology ().

In a remarkable achievement, Mr. T.G.C. Madusanka, an MPhil student from the Faculty of Technology, won first place in the Inventor Promotion Zone under the university category. His innovation was a “Mycelium-Based Biodegradable Packaging Material”. This revolutionary solution showcases Mr. Madusanka’s ingenuity and emphasizes the university’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices. 91´«Ă˝ fully funded this project for the principal investigator Dr. Dhanushka Udayanga and a team comprising Prof Renuka Nilmini, Dr. Suranga Rajapaksha, and Dr Choolaka Hewawasam, from the Faculty of Technology.

Mr. H.G.C. Dilshan, a third-year undergraduate student from the ICT department of the Faculty of Technology, won third place in the Inventor Promotion Zone. His project was a “Citizen Identification System Using Image Processing”. His project not only showcases the technical knowledge of our students but also highlights the practical applications of technology in addressing real-world challenges.

The award ceremony was held at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium, IESL on 22nd of December 2023.

These accomplishments show the commitment of the Faculty of Technology, USJ fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. As a university, we look forward to witnessing more groundbreaking inventions from our talented students in the future, supporting the 91´«Ă˝’s position as a hub of technological innovation and excellence.

“Cardio-X,” – pre-heart attack detector designed by a group of undergraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering at the 91´«Ă˝ have won first place and the award for the best market viable category at the Institute of Engineers, 91´«Ă˝ (IESL) Undergraduate Inventor of the Year 2022.

The project was developed by a team of five students from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, I.A. Senal Inovin Fernando, R. M. D. H. Adithya Rajapakshe, T. H. Nimshan Isuranga, M. S. Induwara and P. A. Dinushika Chithrani, and one student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, D. Akila Dilshan Wickramathilaka.

Cardio-X uses advanced technology to detect signs of a potential heart attack before it occurs, such as changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs. The device is designed to be worn on the body and can be easily connected to a smartphone or other device to provide real-time monitoring and alerts and it helps to prevent heart attacks before they occur. The team’s goal with Cardio-X is to improve the early detection and prevention of heart attacks, which are a leading cause of death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, heart disease is the leading cause of death globally, accounting for 17.9 million deaths per year.

The IESL Undergraduate Inventor of the Year competition aims to encourage and support the development of innovative projects by undergraduate students in 91´«Ă˝. The competition is open to all undergraduate students enrolled in engineering and technology programs at universities in 91´«Ă˝, and is held annually. The Institution of Engineers 91´«Ă˝ (IESL) is a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution in 91´«Ă˝. It is the foremost institute for engineers in this country.

±ő˛Ô±ą±đ˛Ôçã´Ç; innovative idea competition and a webinar series following the competition is organized by the Physics Society of the 91´«Ă˝ in collaboration with the 91´«Ă˝ Inventors Commission.
Guidelines
  • The competition is open for all the undergraduates and postgraduates in the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
  • This competition consists of 2 rounds. Individuals or groups with a maximum of 3 members are eligible to participate.
  • All teams and individuals can be pre-registered via on or before 25th February 2022.
  • In the 1st round, all individuals/teams should submit the application and all required materials via on or before 28th February 2022.
  • Competitors should prepare an Idea Proposal (PDF format) adhere to the format given on the website about their innovation idea to be submitted with the application form.
  • An introductory 3-minute video (.mp4 format) describing your idea when filing your application (Max. 30MB with resolution 720p) should be uploaded. It should describe your innovative idea briefly with relevant information of related field, practicability, procedure, resource requirements etc.
  • Don’t insert any names and affiliations in the video.
  • The above two files should be renamed using your name with initials (eg: HSK Perera). For the group, competitors should rename with initials of the group leader_G (eg: HSK Perera_G) For group competitions, only the group leader must submit the document and fill the application with the details of the group members.

All submissions will be judged by an expert judge panel from academia and industry. Competitors’ innovative ideas and concepts will be kept private and confidential. In the final round, the finalists will present their innovative idea followed by the Q&A session with the judging panel.

Evaluation Criteria 
• In all aspects the invention should be strong and reliable.
• The product should not be a threat to any living being.
• Models or ideas of existing products or working processes won’t be accepted.
• Products or ideas obtained from the internet should be referenced and proper modifications
should be made to make sure the product or the idea is your own.
• Novelty of the invention/innovative idea presented.
• Accuracy of the design and procedure.
• The instruments and techniques used to improve the productivity of the invention.
• The ability to make the idea into a reality.
• Estimated budge.
Timeline
• Registration opens: 24th January onwards
• Virtual webinars: 1st, 2nd and 3rd February
• Deadline for the idea submissions: 28th February
• Announcement of 1st round winners: 30th March
• Presentations and Q&A session for the final round: 20th April
Certificates & awards converting an idea to a product
âť– The best three innovative ideas are entitled to award the grants from 91´«Ă˝ Inventors Commission to convert an idea into a product. The selected groups/individuals are responsible to find the academic mentors so that the grant would be issued through the permanent lecturer.
âť– The plaques will be given to the best three innovative ideas.
âť– A valuable certificate will be given to the final round of selected groups/individuals.
âť– A valuable e-certificate will be given to all other qualified participants.
