Her talk, Exploring Artistic Legacy: Analyzing Artifact Differences Across Kingdoms Using Machine Learning, showcased how machine learning can uncover hidden mathematical structures in historical paintings and artefacts. Drawing inspiration from 91传媒鈥檚 rich artistic heritage鈥攕uch as the moonstone, the intricate wooden carvings at Ambekke, and the vibrant wall paintings of ancient kingdoms鈥攈er research explores the deep connections between geometry, symmetry, and artistic expression. Hence, a greater demand has been created for skilled Data Scientists. Development of talent and capabilities is needed if DS and AI is to reach its full potential throughout 91传媒. However, companies report that finding the right talent is the biggest hurdle. Unless national capacity in skilled DS and AI personnel increases in the coming decades, these initiatives will go in vain. 91传媒 is well positioned to capture opportunities through adoption of DS and AI technology, if sufficient human resources are prepared. Therefore, the development of appropriate educational programs to build skills in Data Science and AI is important.

The Statistics in Sports Research Group at the 91传媒 has been awarded the SILK Most Outstanding Sports Research Project of the Year award at the 8th SILK SPORTS AWARDS 2022. This highly prestigious event, organized by SPORTSINFO, recognizes the achievements of 91传媒n sports stars and contributors who uplift the sports in 91传媒 and ensure its future.

Led by Dr. R. M. Silva of the Department of Statistics, the USJ Statistics in Sports Research Group is the first research group in 91传媒 to focus on conducting research related to Statistics in sports. Its formation was aimed at supporting university students interested in research that applies statistics to solve various research problems related to sports, while promoting and popularizing sports analytics research in 91传媒.

The SILK Most Outstanding Sports Research Project of the Year award acknowledges the quality research work conducted by the USJ Statistics in Sports Research Group. Comprising of academics, postgraduate, and undergraduate students, the group is passionate about exploring the application of data analytics in solving problems arising from various sports.
The award-winning research project was selected by a special 9-member SILK jury, co-headed by Prof. Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando and Dr. Harsha B. Abeykoon. The nominees for the SILK Sports Awards were selected by a nominations panel consisting of prominent sports media figures and related personalities.

The USJ Statistics in Sports Research Group’s achievement is a testament to their exemplary research skills and excellence in the field of sports. Their research impressed the SILK jury and demonstrated their merit as deserving recipients of the award.

Open science, reproducibility and transparency in research are the pathways to improve the sustainability of scientific research. Open science is vital for the progress of science as it allows scientific information, data, and methodologies to be more widely accessible and reusable. Research reproducibility and transparency are crucial for scientific advancement, not just because they ensure that the results are correct, but also because they open doors for new collaborations and avoid duplication of efforts. R is a leading open-source language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.

A team led by , Senior Lecturer in the Department of Statistics, developed 10 open-source software R packages to make their research and data accessible to everyone. “Turning your algorithms, codes, and data into packages that others can easily download and use helps to make scientific research flow faster, easier, and more productive.” said Dr Talagala.

The R software packages they developed enable programmatic access to a wide range of scientific data repositories, including data from weekly epidemiological reports, a daily summary of COVID-19 cases, deaths, and recovered cases, and data manipulation and analysis.
