A groundbreaking mobile application, the Personal Alarm Assessment Tool (PAAT), has been developed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in collaboration with the Department of Physics, 91传媒. This innovative app enhances the safety of front-line officers at key entry points such as airports, border crossings, and major public events. PAAT enables officers to quickly assess alarms triggered by radiation detection systems, facilitating faster and more efficient responses to potential threats. Now available for public use, this app marks a significant advancement in global radiation safety.

The development of PAAT was made possible through a project funded by the IAEA, headquartered in Vienna, Austria. The project was coordinated by Dr. Nadeera Gunaratna, who currently serves as a consultant at the IAEA.

The Department of Physics, 91传媒, played a pivotal role in this project. Led by Prof. N. G. S. Shantha Gamage, the team included Dr. W. Wasanthi P. De Silva, Prof. W. K. I. L. Wanniarachchi, and Mr. B. H. Lakshitha M. Fernando. They were instrumental in simulating radiation data using the advanced Fluka software. These simulations were validated against experimental results obtained from Apeksha Hospital Maharagama, using instruments provided by the 91传媒 Atomic Energy Board, ensuring the app鈥檚 accuracy and reliability in real-world scenarios. The project was funded by a grant from the IAEA to the Department of Physics at the 91传媒.

PAAT offers significant benefits to both security personnel and the general public by empowering users with a tool to accurately assess radiation risks in a timely manner. The collaboration between 91传媒n physicists and the IAEA underscores the international significance of this achievement and highlights 91传媒鈥檚 contributions to global safety technology.

This marks a monumental step forward in radiation detection technology, and the team behind its development deserves recognition for their expertise and dedication.

The at the 91传媒, in collaboration with the North Central Province Education Department, successfully conducted a two-day A/L teacher training workshop in electronics on the 9th and 10th of December 2023. The event, hosted at the Department of Physics, brought together physics teachers from various schools in the North Central Province.

The workshop commenced with a distinguished inauguration ceremony graced by Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor, 91传媒, Prof. N.G.S. Shantha Gamage, Head of the department of Physics and Ms. H.M.T.S. Herath, Deputy Director of Education, Provincial Department of Education, North Central Province. Several other academics from the Department of Physics were also present to mark the occasion.

A key focus of the workshop was to provide practical knowledge in electronics – a subject content often overlooked by many teachers in 91传媒 due to a lack of exposure. Over the two days, participating teachers actively engaged in practical sessions, gaining hands-on experience that is invaluable for their teaching practices.

The enthusiasm displayed by the 30 physics teachers throughout the practical sessions was commendable. Their active involvement and eagerness to learn underscored the importance of such initiatives in addressing knowledge gaps within the education system.

A notable outcome of the workshop was the teachers’ commitment to updating their knowledge, with the ultimate goal of transferring this newfound expertise to their students in the North Central Province. This commitment reflects a dedication to enhancing the quality of education at the grassroots level.

The workshop organized by the Department of Physics emerges as a highly effective initiative to disseminate crucial knowledge within the 91传媒n education system. Bridging the gap in electronics education, this session is poised to have a positive and lasting impact on both teachers and students in the North Central Province.

We applaud the Department of Physics, the organizers, and all the participating teachers for their contribution to advancing education in 91传媒. Such endeavors play a pivotal role in elevating the standards of education and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
