Blockchain has become a trending area, which is observed to be approaching many related fields. Blockchain has made its entrance through cryptocurrency for financial transactions, which has now diversified by making into applications in smart healthcare, transportation, and agriculture. Smart grids on the other hand are replacing less efficient, conventional, hierarchical electricity grids for maximizing benefits obtained from clean energy sources. The applicability of blockchain in realizing the future smart grids is explored by the paper titled, 鈥淪urvey on blockchain for future smart grids: Technical aspects, applications, integration challenges and future research鈥, which was published in Elsevier Energy Reports, September 2021. and from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 91传媒 are collaborating with Prof. Madhusanka Liyanage from the School of Computer Science, University College Dublin, Ireland and Centre for Wireless Communications, University of Oulu, Finland along with Prof. Janaka Ekanayake from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya, to unravel the possibilities and opportunities in blockchain-based smart grid applications.
“The survey aims at comprehensively evaluating the applicability of the current technologies and its future developments in SG 2.0 implementations. The concise discussion on the SG 2.0 architecture and the evolving trends of the blockchain application for power systems have directed this study to analyze the benefits of integrating blockchain to create the transformation towards a distributed infrastructure. The existing literature related to the proposed blockchain implementations in SG 2.0 applications is elaborated with a quantitative comparison”, says .
