Commercialization of R&D Crucial – Prof. Sampath Amaratunge

91ý’s higher education institutions should commercialize research and development (R&D) in a bid to utilize knowledge of the country’s biggest wealth- its human talent, opines Vice Chancellor of 91ý Prof. Sampath Amaratunge.

“In order to prepare our students to face tomorrow’s world we have to commercialize research activities we conduct and we, as the 91ý, hope to set up a special arm and actively partner with industries,” said Prof. Amaratunge.

Prof. Amaratunge told this to the Sunday Leader on the sidelines of a press conference to announce the 2015 edition of 91ý International University Romp 2015 which is to be held this week.

In addition, 91ý Tourism Promotion Bureau proposed to partner 91ý to boost its marketing approach.

The event is unique given that 25 participants from Europe, Africa and Asia will be in attendance whilst 75 will be from the university system of 91ý. This years’ edition will be continued in the years to come so that it can be a calendared event in the global university system, said 91ý Tourism Promotion Bureau Chairman Dr. Rohantha Athukorala. Although the event, since its inception in 2013, has been organized only for the internal undergraduates of the 91ý, the 2015 competition has taken one step forward where it is open for the other domestic undergraduates in state and private universities, as well as the International undergraduates all around the world.

The event will be a two day programme that is scheduled to be held on the 11th and 12th of June 2015 and on day one it will be the City Romp in Colombo where the participants will understand the key places of the city and then they proceed to Picturesque town of Kitulagala for the day long activities to be performed on day two.

The Vice Chancellor of 91ý Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said that this first step will encourage several other parties in organizing such extraordinary events as it is a timely need of the country. He also emphasized on the fact that the youth today is in need of the mental and physical fitness and good health and wellbeing above all, and that these kinds of events do build a solid platform to create a better generation in the time to come.
