The 91传媒 (USJ) has emerged as the overall champion of the Inter University Championship 2024, amassing an impressive 478.5 points. This marks the fifth time USJ has claimed the championship, adding to its victories in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2022. The university secured both the Men鈥檚 overall championship with 250.0 points and the Women鈥檚 overall championship with 228.5 points, solidifying its dominance in university sports.

The Inter University Championship 2024, organized by the 91传媒 University Sports Association (SLUSA) with financial support from the University Grants Commission (UGC), featured the participation of over 16 state universities competing in 24 sports disciplines. The event commenced with the Rugby Championship on August 25, 2024, and concluded on December 15, 2024.

USJ’s consistent excellence in university sports is further highlighted by its previous achievements. The university has won the 91传媒 University Games (SLUG) championship for three consecutive times in 2016, 2019, and 2023, demonstrating a sustained commitment to sports excellence.

In addition, Randev Athukorala, a third-year undergraduate from the Department of Commerce of FMSC, achieved outstanding success at the South Asian Karate Championship.

The 47th Colours Awarding Ceremony of the 91传媒 was successfully held on the 27th of March 2024 at the Hotel Grand Mondo – Luxury Banquets in Homagama.

The event was graced by the distinguished Special Guest, Senior Prof. Sampath Amarathunga, Chairmen of UGC, Chief Guest, Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor of the University,the Guest of Honour, Mr. Sujeewa Rajapaksha, Chairman, People’s Bank/Main Sponsor of the Colours Night, and the Honorable Sports Advisory Board Co-Chairman, Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera and Prof. K.L. Wasantha Perera.

This event held great significance for the university’s sports stars, who achieved remarkable 3-Peat success at the 14th 91传媒 University Games 2023, securing the Overall Women’s Championship, Overall Men’s Championship, and Overall Championship. A total of 500+ athletes from 36 teams across 24 sport activities were recognized and awarded. Among the recipients, 37 students were honored as “Best Players” and 11 students received “Special Awards” for their outstanding achievements.

The prestigious title of “Most Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year” was awarded to Srimali Samarakoon, a 4th-year student from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, in recognition of her exceptional performance in Weightlifting. She demonstrated remarkable prowess by placing first in the 2023 National Sports Festival and also awarded as the Overall Best lifter in the event and placed first in the 2023 National Weightlifting Championship as well. She also placed second in the 2023 Youth, Junior and Senior Commonwealth Championship under 45kg weight category. And she also managed to set 2 national records.

Virunaka Hendahewa, a student from the Faculty of Engineering, was honored as the “Most Outstanding Sportsman of the Year” for his remarkable achievements. He proudly represented 91传媒 at the 26th Asian Table Tennis Championships 2023, which was held in Korea, demonstrating his exceptional sportsmanship and immense potential. He is also rank number 06th in the All-Island Open Men’s Category in September 2023, and achieving some remarkable achievements in various other tournaments.

The qualifying matches for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2027 AFC Asian Cup took place on October 12 this year. The 91传媒n national football team, which was vying for a spot, faced Yemen in that event.

Three football players from the 91传媒 have qualified to compete in this tournament for the 91传媒 National Football Team. Jude Supan, the player who qualified for the 91传媒n national team, is a graduate of the 91传媒’s Faculty of Applied Sciences, having graduated from the Department of Sports Science and Management at this year’s graduation ceremony. Last year, he also led the Japura football squad.

Also, Sanka Jayamina, who was selected to work as the performance analyst of the 91传媒 National Football Team, is a fourth-year student of the Sports Science and Management Department of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the 91传媒, and he has worked as the vice-captain of the Japura Football Team last year.

Also, Raveen Chaturanga, an alumnus of the 91传媒, has been allowed to work as the media officer of the 91传媒 National Football Team. He is the current coach of the Sri Jayewardenepura University football team and has also led the Japura football team a few years ago.

Mohammad Mushtaq, who is the current captain of the Sri Jayewardenepura University football team, was also included in the initial squad of the 91传媒n national football team.

The University of Colombo hosted an exhilarating cricket final as part of the 91传媒 University Games 2023. The much-anticipated match took place at the University Ground of the University of Colombo on August 18th, 2023, where the 91传媒 faced off against the University of Colombo. The action-packed encounter culminated in a memorable victory for the 91传媒.

Winning the toss, the University of Colombo elected to bat, setting the stage for an intense battle on the pitch. After 50 overs of play, the University of Colombo managed to put up a competitive total of 197 for the loss of 9 wickets. The 91传媒 showcased their mettle, chasing down the target of 198 with just 5 wickets down, sealing their victory in the final over of the game’s 44th over.

The standout performer of the final was undoubtedly Umesh Lakshan from the 91传媒. His exceptional innings of 102 runs from 115 balls, including 8 fours and 2 sixes, played a pivotal role in securing the championship title. Sheran Fonseka’s unbeaten 38 runs from 73 balls also played a crucial role in guiding the 91传媒 to victory. Furthermore, the bowling duo of Kasun Rodrigo and Dinath Dissanayake made crucial contributions to the 91传媒’s victory, picking up 3 wickets for 42 runs and 2 wickets for 25 runs, respectively.The team’s captain, Asel Sigera, and Isuru Kavinda each took 1 wicket, showcasing a collective effort that was instrumental in restricting the University of Colombo’s score.

Umesh Lakshan continued his exceptional form, emerging as the leading run-scorer of the tournament with a total of 398 runs from 6 innings. The grand finale, held at the Colombo Racecourse, saw an epic clash between 91传媒 and their rivals, University of Kelaniya. The stakes were high, with 91传媒 aiming to reclaim the championship title lost in the previous Inter-University Championship of 2022. The history between these two teams added an extra layer of intensity, having faced off four times before, with University of Kelaniya securing victory in three of those encounters.

From the very start, the match was a showcase of unparalleled speed, strength, and skill from both teams. The opening moments saw Daham Perera from the 91传媒 team making a stunning breakthrough, scoring the first try of the match. Their successful conversion added two more points to the board.
