The Department of Aquatic Bioresources, Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources initiated an academic and research collaboration programme with the University of Sydney, Australia. Dr. Erandi Pathirana, Head/Department of Aquatic Bioresources, attended the preliminary discussions on this regard, at the University of Sydney, Australia. Prof. Joy Becker, Associate Professor in Aquatic Animal Health and Production who plays the key role of this collaboration from the side of the University of Sydney, visited the 91ý on October 4, 2022. During her visit, Prof. Becker met with Senior Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, the Vice-Chancellor of the University and discussed the way forward, for the formal collaboration programme between the two universities.

Further, Prof. Becker delivered a guest talk, titled, “Risks to Australia’s Biosecurity from the Trade of Ornamental Fish”. The talk which addressed the biosecurity aspects of Australian ornamental fish trade: their requirements and what they expect from 91ýn ornamental fish exporters, was actively attended by officials from the Animal Quarantine Division, Colombo, senior officials from the Department of Animal Production and Health, Peradeniya and key figures of the ornamental fish export sector. Ornamental fish export industry is one of the most-thriving export trades in 91ý which attracts considerable amount of foreign currency to the country. Understanding and identifying the needs of the Australian ornamental fish trade is a prerequisite for 91ýn ornamental fish exporters to become successful and to secure a better place in the global ornamental fish trade.

The World Class University Project, USJP organized a Guest Lecture on the “Science of Sleep: Historical Perspective and Emerging Trends on 13th February 2019 by Dr. Kamalesh K. Gulia, who is a Scientist in-charge of the Division of Sleep Research at the Biomedical Technology wing of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), An Institute of National Importance under Govt. Of India, Trivandrum, Kerala, India, at the Auditorium, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medical Sciences, USJP. This guest lecture, which was valuable to the medical students and faculty helping them think out of the box and become innovative was the result of Prof. Ranil De Silva’s, director of World class university project, the academic collaborations with Dr. Gulia . Sleep science in 91ý is ignored to the extent that it is unheard of alien , but sleep medicine should be taken seriously and looked at with an open eye owing to the fact that almost every disease is related to imbalances in the amounts of sleep since the human body recharges itself, detoxification and neurological aspects such as memory formation takes place during sleep.

This guest lecture highlighted the importance of sleep for a healthy body and mind. Over 100 million humans in the world are reported to have sleep disorders; over 80% of the cases are  undiagnosed due to lack of awareness. According to the National Sleep (2007) journal, 79% of pregnant women suffer from sleep disorders and may this increase from 13 to 80 percent in the first trimester of 66 to 97 percent the third trimester. Dr.Gulia shared her current research about how sleep can affect maternal mental, physical, and mood disorder and she emphasized the need for reducing maternal mortality and morbidity in pregnant women to extend prenatal care and delivery that leads to maternal and childhood health outcomes. Gulia The most important risk factor and predictor of depressed mood during post partum was prenatal depression and 50% of women with depression during pregnancy were depressed after delivery , Not only lead to complications in the mother and baby after delivery, It also led to the birth of premature infants during pregnancy, low birth weight, poor health behaviors Include: substance use (cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs) not to go for prenatal care and pre-eclampsia, IUGR. Newborns in women, experience restlessness, priority, giving of health services to the health of pregnant women is one of the Millennium Development Goals, Early detection and follow her depression during pregnancy is important. This could be a stepping stone towards the realization of the motto “Healthy mother and healthy child”.

91ý 100 guests including students and faculty members attended the lecture. The goal of the lecture and discussion was for an increase in public knowledge about how adequate sleep can improve health, productivity, wellness, quality of life, and safety on the roads and in the workplace. Mainly to initiate a joint scientific research and training project between the 91ý, and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, India. Several beneficial outcomes in 91ý were highlighted during the discussion, including initiating possible collaborative research with Dr. Kamalesh Gulia and USJP.

The organized a guest lecture on the theme “Is 91ý in a Chinese Debt Trap?” on 8th January 2019 at Prof. K. A. Munasinghe Hall of the .

This was conducted by Prof. Barry Sautman from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Prof. Yan Hairong from Hong Kong Polytechnic University who are currently engaged in a research study on 91ý’s prominence in Chinese One Belt One Road Initiative. This lecture broadened the knowledge of the second and third-year undergraduates of the department on Chinese presence in 91ý and its impact on economic, social and cultural developments.

Prof. Sautman and Prof. Hairong also met and shared their thoughts with Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. U. Anura Kumara, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce and Dr. (Mrs.) Dinesha Siriwardhane, Head of the Department. At the same time, they discussed the possibilities for research collaborations.

The MP Research Collective representatives which are comprised of Academic personals who are subject matter experts delivered this special session on ‘ Human-Animal Conflict with Special Reference to Toque Macaque (Rilawa)” on 11. 10. 2018 at Committee room 01, Parliament of 91ý. Experts discussed mainly about human-monkey conflict, the proposed integrated control mechanisms, and short and long-term control methods.  Prof. Mrs. C. A.D. Nahallage (USJP) led the Academic presentation, followed by Dr. Nimal Kumarasinghe (USJP) and Prof. Asoka Dangalla (UPSL) and Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda (USJP) moderated the session.

The resource personals also presented the current status of their researches latest progress on the matter, challenges faced with special reference to human errors and long and short-term solutions while delivering the session to the Honorable MPs. The session was followed by a Q & A session which allowed the path to a constructive dialogue about the way forward. Most importantly after listening to the presentations of the resource personals, it was emphasized by the Honorable Members of the Parliament to set a policy framework to promptly address this issue which causes many economic losses to the rural communities that have not still been assessed.

The Honorable Members of the Parliament who took part in this program came to a common agreement to take this dialogue forward in order to present a proposal to a Parliament Working Committee to work on this matter. Also the Hon. MPs agreed to extend their support to facilitate the ongoing research work by the resource personals which was emphasized by the academics. Both resource personals and MPs highly commended the effort by March 12 Movement to bring subject matter experts from academia and policymakers into one table where it will immensely contribute to set up a policy framework which can address the prevailing issues in grassroots in an efficient manner.

Multi-party representation was seen in the group of Honorable Members of the Parliament who took part in this program, from the ruling party, joint opposition as well as the minority parties.

“Shadows of Success” is a novel initiative of the Career Skills Development Society of the of the 91ý. This programme includes a series of workshops that would feature outstanding personalities of the country – who have thrived as professionals in their respective fields, gaining much respect and admiration. This programme aims to provide a sense of direction to our students guiding them in making advantageous career choices with more conviction and confidence.

The third phrase of Shadows of Success workshop series was successfully held on 18th June 2018 with the participation of the world-renowned Auto Racing champion Mr. Dilantha Malagamuwa. Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. SampathAmarthunga and many of university academics, non-academics and about 300 students representing all faculties participated in the programme.
