On August 28th, 2024, the 91传媒 (USJ) and the Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC entered into a significant partnership to launch a major restoration initiative in the Yagirala Forest Reserve. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed at the Vice Chancellor’s office, with Senior Professor Pathmalal Manage, the Vice Chancellor of the University, and Mr. S. Prabagar, Chief Operating Officer / Executive Director of Commercial Bank, signing on behalf of their respective institutions.

The signing ceremony was attended by high-ranking officers from both parties. Representing the University were Prof. Upul Subasingha, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences; Prof. Daham Jayewardana, Head of the ; Dr. G.G.T. Chandrathilake, Director and Senior Lecturer at the Center for Sustainability (CFS); and Mr. Kosala Gunawardana, Curator from the CFS. On behalf of Commercial Bank, several senior officials, including Mr Hasrath Munasinghe (Deputy General Manager – Retail Banking & Marketing), Mr Chithaka Dharmasena (Assistant General Manager 鈥� Services), Mr Dushmantha Jayasuriya (Chief Manager – Retail Products Department), Mrs Kamalini Ellawala (Senior Manager 鈥� Sustainability, Mr Gayan Wijesingheand Mr Thiyagarajan Sanjeevan (Senior Assistant Manager – Retail Products Department) the Head of Sustainability, also participated in the event.

This landmark agreement brings together the expertise of the CFS and the resources of Commercial Bank to promote sustainable forest management and ecological restoration in one of 91传媒鈥檚 key biodiversity reserves.

The Yagirala Restoration Project focuses on the rehabilitation of degraded areas, the enhancement of biodiversity, and active community involvement to ensure sustainable land-use practices. The project鈥檚 management plan, which spans the next five years, is structured around three core objectives: biodiversity conservation, research and education, and public and community awareness. Additionally, the project aims to establish a framework for ongoing research and monitoring to inform adaptive management strategies, support educational activities for students, and advocate for raising community awareness about the ecological significance of the forest. This approach will be achieved through multi-stakeholder collaboration, ensuring the conservation of the forest while providing economic and educational benefits.

This partnership is poised to pave the way for innovative conservation practices that protect vital natural resources while fostering education and research. Both CFS and Commercial Bank are committed to monitoring the project鈥檚 progress and ensuring that the restoration efforts have a lasting positive impact on the environment and surrounding communities.

91传媒 participated at the Annual Inter University Debate Competition organized by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), on the 27^th of April 2024, and were awarded first runner-up at the Awards Ceremony held on 21^st of June 2024 at Marino Beach Hotel Colombo.

Eight students from the Department of Chemistry participated in the competition: Minduli Perera, Devin Dharmarathne, Avishka Thathsara, Darshitha Dilshan, Keshala Gunarathna, Hashma Imnisar, Wehara Gunawardena and Aaysha Sufran.

The competition was conducted according to the league method, where each team debated with all other teams. The team from College of Chemical Sciences won the competition, while the University of Colombo emerged third. The team from the 91传媒 thanked their Lecturer in Charge, Prof. Theshini Perera for her unwavering guidance and support extended throughout the course of the practice sessions. They acknowledged the encouragement they received from the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Prof. Champa Jayaweera and the other lecturers of the department. They also expressed their immense gratitude to their past debating captains, Lasni Nishshanke, Manesha Fernando and Govini Perera for their valuable input during their practice sessions 听as well as to Hirusha Liyanage.

The team also appreciated Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, Chairperson of the Inter- University Debating Committee and the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon for providing them with an opportunity to showcase their skills and engage in intellectual discussions as young scientists.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival 鈥楬aritha Wasanthaya 2024鈥� annually organized by the听辞蹿听 was held on 25^th April 2024 at the Department premises.

Prof. Upul Subasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Prof. Daham Jayawardana, Head of the department of Department of Forestry and Environmental Science participated in the festival to share the New Year happiness with the students. Also, academic members of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science and other departments of the Faculty of Applied Sciences participated in the festival.

Students representing all departments of the faculty participated in the New Year Festival and to the various folk sports taken place throughout the festival day. The Forestry and Environment Society of the university, in collaboration with faculty members and student volunteers, meticulously planned every aspect of Haritha Wasanthaya to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience for all participants. Their dedication and commitment to preserving cultural heritage and promoting environmental consciousness were instrumental in making this event a reality.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has initiated a significant step towards addressing plastic waste management challenges in 91传媒. Through its ‘Project for Strengthening Plastic Management Capacity’, launched in September 2023, JICA conducted a comprehensive survey shedding light on the current state of plastic waste management in the country, previously unexplored.

Key findings from the survey highlight that plastic waste constitutes approximately 10 percent of the waste collected by local authorities, with packaging plastics like Single-Use Plastics (SUP) comprising a significant portion. Despite the presence of 49 recycling facilities nationwide with a combined capacity to recycle 152 tons of plastic per day, the actual recycling rate stands at around 100 tons daily.

In response to these findings, JICA recently engaged with the Faculty of Applied Sciences of 91传媒, the sole institution in 91传媒 housing a . During lectures delivered by JICA officers and experts, both faculty members and students exhibited remarkable interest in the insights on plastics management, signaling unprecedented enthusiasm for collaborative efforts.

Recognizing the necessity for a multi-stakeholder approach involving industry, government, and academia, JICA emphasizes continued proactive dialogues to devise effective solutions to the plastic waste predicament in 91传媒.

The at the 91传媒, in collaboration with the North Central Province Education Department, successfully conducted a two-day A/L teacher training workshop in electronics on the 9^th and 10^th of December 2023. The event, hosted at the Department of Physics, brought together physics teachers from various schools in the North Central Province.

The workshop commenced with a distinguished inauguration ceremony graced by Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor, 91传媒, Prof. N.G.S. Shantha Gamage, Head of the department of Physics and Ms. H.M.T.S. Herath, Deputy Director of Education, Provincial Department of Education, North Central Province. Several other academics from the Department of Physics were also present to mark the occasion.

A key focus of the workshop was to provide practical knowledge in electronics – a subject content often overlooked by many teachers in 91传媒 due to a lack of exposure. Over the two days, participating teachers actively engaged in practical sessions, gaining hands-on experience that is invaluable for their teaching practices.

The enthusiasm displayed by the 30 physics teachers throughout the practical sessions was commendable. Their active involvement and eagerness to learn underscored the importance of such initiatives in addressing knowledge gaps within the education system.

A notable outcome of the workshop was the teachers’ commitment to updating their knowledge, with the ultimate goal of transferring this newfound expertise to their students in the North Central Province. This commitment reflects a dedication to enhancing the quality of education at the grassroots level.

The workshop organized by the Department of Physics emerges as a highly effective initiative to disseminate crucial knowledge within the 91传媒n education system. The “Plastic Collection, Polluter Identification, Sorting, Recycling, and Local Recycling Venture Support Project” organized by the Forestry and Environmental Science Society of the , USJ, and supported by the , 91传媒, took place on June 5, 2023, at the Bird Park, Attidiya Wildlife Wetland.

In this effort to combat plastic pollution, a dedicated team of academics and university undergraduates joined forces for this project aimed at addressing the urgent need for plastic waste management. Led by experts Prof. Hiran Amarasekera, Prof. Daham Jayewardnena, Dr. Thilak Chandrathilake, Dr. Chaamila Pathirana, and Mr. Kosala Gunawardene from the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, this initiative sought to tackle the multifaceted challenges posed by plastic waste in line with World Environment Day 2023 #BeatPlasticChallenge.

The project featured the following events:

1️⃣ Plastic Collection Drive: Plastic waste was collected from the wetland area, contributing to ecosystem restoration.

2️⃣ Polluter Identification: Sources of plastic pollution were identified, raising awareness for responsible waste management.

3️⃣ Sorting and Recycling: The project demonstrated the power of recycling by sorting and transforming plastic waste into valuable resources. It emphasized the importance of recycling and its role in transitioning to a circular economy. Participants had the opportunity to support local recycling ventures by handing over their plastic waste for proper disposal.

4️⃣Interactive Workshops: Participants involved in hands-on workshops which provided knowledge on creative ways to reduce plastic consumption, adopt sustainable practices, and explore the benefits of recycling.听

The project concluded with a significant stride towards a cleaner, more sustainable world, preserving the beauty of the environment for generations to come.
