Amaya Sithumini Kalukottage, a third-year undergraduate from the BSc Hons in Sports Science and Management at Sri Jayewardenepura University, is set to make history as she represents 91´«Ã½ at the 31st edition of the FISU World University Games scheduled to take place in Chengdu, China, from July 28 to August 8. She is the country’s first-ever artistic gymnast to participate in this remarkable event.

Amaya’s achievements go beyond the university games; she has also represented 91´«Ã½ twice at the Commonwealth Games, first in the 2018 Gold Coast event followed by the 2022 Birmingham edition.

Furthermore, her contributions were vital in leading the women’s team to victory, securing a Bronze medal at the Central South Asian Gymnastics Championships 2021 held in Bangladesh.

Virunaka Hendahewa, a third-year undergraduate from the Faculty of Engineering, showcased his outstanding performance at the recently concluded All-Island Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship 2023. Organized by the Tibhar sports club, this event took place from July 16th to 18th at the Kandy Municipal Indoor Stadium.

Virunaka showcased his exceptional table tennis skills as he competed in the highly competitive Open Men’s Singles event. His dedication and hard work paid off, as he consistently performed at a high level throughout the championship and advanced to the quarterfinals, showcasing his talent and commitment to the sport.

We take immense pride in Virunaka’s achievement, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to him who have brought honor and recognition to our university. We wish Virunaka the very best in his sporting career, and may he continue to excel in table tennis and achieve greater milestones.

USJ women weightlifters Shrimali Samarakoon and Imalsha Madhushani have achieved remarkable success at the 47th National Sports Festival.

Shrimali won the gold medal in the 45kg weight category, earning the title of the women’s best lifter. Imalsha secured the bronze medal in the 71kg weight category. These achievements highlight their dedication, talent, and the university’s commitment to fostering excellence in sports.

The 31st World University Games is scheduled to take place in Chengdu, China from July 28th to August 8th, welcoming more than 8000 athletes from over 150 countries. Representing 91´«Ã½ in this esteemed international sports arena will be a team of six exceptional students from the 91´«Ã½.

Hasara Wijayaratne, a fourth-year undergraduate from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, and Hasini Ambalangodage, a third-year undergraduate from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, have been chosen to represent 91´«Ã½ in the Badminton – Doubles event. Their outstanding performance has secured them the top position in the National Rankings for this event. Competing in the Gymnastics event is Amaya Kalukottage, a talented third-year undergraduate from the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Amaya’s exceptional skills have earned her a place in national-level athletic competitions, proudly representing 91´«Ã½ in the Commonwealth Games of 2018 and 2022.

Chamal Kumarasiri, a fourth-year undergraduate from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, will be participating in the Triple Jump event. Chamal’s impressive achievements include breaking the national record and securing the gold medal in the Triple Jump event at the National Athletic Meet in 2022. S.A.T. Dasun, a third-year undergraduate from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, has been selected to compete in the High Jump event. Dasun holds the record for the high jump event at the Inter-University Championship and achieved the bronze medal in the same event at the National Athletic Meet in 2022. Representing 91´«Ã½ in the 100m event is Amasha de Silva, an undergraduate from the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Amasha’s exceptional talent has earned her the “National Champion” in the 100m event at the National Athletic Meet for three consecutive years.

We wish these talented athletes the best of luck as they strive for greater heights, bringing pride to 91´«Ã½ and the 91´«Ã½. May their efforts be rewarded with success and inspire future generations of athletes.

The 46th Colours Awarding Ceremony of the 91´«Ã½ was successfully held on the 9th of June 2023 at the Golden Rose Banquet Hall in Boralesgamuwa.

The event was graced by the distinguished Chief Guest, Prof. Upul Subasinghe, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, and the Guest of Honour, Mr. Mahinda Ranasinghe, Managing Director of Finagle Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, along with other esteemed guests, including Mr. Sujeewa Rajapaksha (Chairman, People’s Bank/Main Sponsor of the Colours Night), Mr. Nilupul De Silva (CBL Marketing Manager), and the Honorable Sports Advisory Board Co-Chairman, Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera and Prof. K.L. Wasantha Perera. Additionally, distinguished alumni Mr. Kamal Gamini Silva (Managing Director of KND group and President of Sports Alumina UJSP) and Mr. Ranjith Iddamalgoda (National Organizer, Alumina Association USJP) also graced the event.

This event held great significance for the university’s sports stars, who achieved remarkable success at the Inter University Championships 2022, securing the Overall Women’s Championship, Overall Men’s Runner-Up, and Overall Championship. A total of 423 athletes from 36 teams across 21 sport activities were recognized and awarded. Among the recipients, 36 students were honored as “Best Players” and 29 students received “Special Awards” for their outstanding achievements.

The prestigious title of “Most Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year” was awarded to Hasara Wijerathne, a 4th-year student from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, in recognition of her exceptional performance in Badminton. She demonstrated remarkable prowess by winning the 70th National Badminton Championship 2022 in Women’s Doubles, reaching the semi-finals of the Summer Season All Island Ranking Badminton Championship 2022 in Women’s Singles, and achieving runner-up positions in various other tournaments.

Chamal Kumarasiri, a student from the Department of Sports Science, was honored as the “Most Outstanding Sportsman of the Year” for his remarkable achievements. He proudly represented the university at the 61st National Interstate Senior Athletic Championship 2022 held in India, demonstrating his exceptional sportsmanship and immense potential.
