The inauguration ceremony of the Orientation program took place on 17th July 2023 at Ven. Sri Soratha Auditorium, Faculty of Technology, 91传媒, starting from 09.00 am. Distinguished guests, including the Dean of the Faculty of Technology Prof. A. H. L. Nilmini, Overall Coordinator for Technology Stream from the University Grants Commission, Dr. T.A. Piyasiri, department heads, and lecturers, graced the occasion.

Throughout this program, students had the opportunity to gain vital information on university policies and procedures, explore university resources, get involved in student life, and establish connections with faculty and staff.

The orientation program for the new students of batch 2021/2022 will take place from 17th July to 21st July 2023, at the faculty premises.

The 60th Commemoration of the Most Ven. Welivitiye Sri Soratha Thero was held on 17th July 2023 at the university premises. Most Ven. Welivitiye Sri Soratha Thero was the founder Vice-Chancellor of Vidyodaya University (1959), which later became the 91传媒.

The ceremony commenced with offering Amisa Pooja at the Buddha Shrine of the University, followed by the commemorative oration by the Emeritus Professor M.W. Wimal Wijeratne of the 91传媒 at the Sumangala Hall.

The Innovate 91传媒 2021/2022 awards ceremony took place recently, at the Senate board room of the 91传媒. The event, organized by the of the University, was a celebration of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among the staff and students of the University.听

The competition garnered an overwhelming response, with 202 innovation proposals received during the first stage. These proposals showcased the immense talent and innovative potential of the University’s community. After a meticulous selection process, 59 projects were chosen to advance to the highly anticipated second round.听 Out of them the IIVC Council provided funding for 31 projects under the USJ Innovation Grants Scheme, enabling their creators to transform their ideas into reality. The competition was carried out across 10 Special Interest Groups or specialization areas, with the top winners in SIGs being selected for a final round for deciding on overall winners. The second round was judged by a panel of independent judges nominated by the 91传媒 Inventor鈥檚 Commission.

The awards ceremony welcomed esteemed guests, including the Chairman of the University Grant Commission, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, who served as the chief guest. Prof. Amaratunge was not only a key figure in the initiation of the IIVC Council but also the visionary behind the Innovate 91传媒 competition itself. The event was also attended by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Upul Subasinghe, CEO of the 91传媒 Inventor鈥檚 Commission, Mr.听 N. M. Dolawatte, Deans of the faculties, and members of the IIVC Council, adding further prestige to the occasion.

The event recognized the pioneering service carried out by Prof. Sampath Amaratunge as the founder executive chairman, and Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda and Prof. A. H. L. R. Nilmini as founder co-chairs of the IIVCC.听

The highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of the overall winners. The project “Sani-Fly鈥� 鈥� a public washroom management and tracking solution鈥� emerged on earning the coveted title of the competition’s top innovation. The students of the project team consisted of Pramuk Hewawasam, Ishara Thennakoon, Dinuka Wijesundara and Nipuni Fernando from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

The Second Place was won by the project titled 鈥淒evelopment of a novel yoghurt product incorporated with selected spices and seaweed, to hinder glycemic impact鈥� carried out by the team of Dr. K. W. Madura Jayaaainghe, P. Dayani听 and R. Priyathasini of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.听

The third place was won by the project titled 鈥淒evelopment of nitrite-free herbal sausage using natural ingredients鈥� carried out by the team of Dr. A. M. A. U. Alahakoon, G. T. Piumi Prabodya, K. P. Sewwandi Nuwan Kumari, A. M. Nishadi Anuruddika , R. M. Dilini Navida Prabashini from the Faculty of Technology.

This year marked the second edition of Innovate 91传媒, further solidifying its status as a platform that nurtures and promotes innovation within the University. The event was sponsored by the I lab grant of the Faculty of Engineering funded by the STHRDP project. The IIVC Council, co-chaired by Prof. Lasith Gunawardena and Dr. Nilushi Nugara supported by Dr. Dulini Mudunkotuwa as Secretary and Ms. Chathuri Wasundara as RA, played a crucial role in driving this competition and awards ceremony forward.

This event marks another successful chapter in the University’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and pushing boundaries for a better future.

Mr. Damith D. Lekamge, a student of the , 91传媒, received the Prof M. U. S. Sultanbawa Award for Research in Chemistry 鈥� 2022. This esteemed award, presented by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), recognizes his exceptional and significant contribution to the fields of Science, Chemistry, Education, and Research in 91传媒. The award was granted for his research paper titled “Synthesis and characterization of inclusion complexes of Ageratum conyzoides L. essential oil in 尾-cyclodextrin,” which was presented at the 51st Annual Sessions of IChemC.

Under the guidance of Dr. Isurika Fernando, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, 91传媒, Mr. Lekamge conducted a research project that focused on the synthesis and characterization of inclusion complexes of Ageratum conyzoides L. essential oil in 尾-cyclodextrin. The objective was to explore the potential applications of these complexes.

The prestigious award was presented to Mr. Lekamge at the Inaugural Ceremony of the 52nd Annual Sessions of IChemC, held on June 14, 2023, at the 91传媒 Foundation Institute (SLFI).

The Inauguration Ceremony of the very first batch of Diploma in Cosmetic Technology (Intake 2023/2024), offered by the Department of Biosystems Technology, was successfully held on 27th of May, 2023 at the Ven. Sri Soratha Auditorium, Faculty of Technology, 91传媒.

Prof. Nimal Punyasiri, the chair professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Biochemistry Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Colombo delivered the Keynote speech. Prof. Nilmini Liyanage, the Dean, Faculty of Technology, Dr. Dhanushka Udayanga, Head- Department of Biosystems Technology, Dr. Kaushalya Abeysekera, Coordinator of the Diploma also addressed the gathering. Eng. Raviprasad de Mel, Head of the Department of Materials and Mechanical Technology, visiting lecturers, other academics at the Department of Biosystems Technology, and diploma candidates participated in the event.

Fighting for the women鈥檚 trophy were the teams, Japura A and UOC wherein the trophy was bagged by the Japura A team represented by Vishmi Dias (captain), Naduni Wataliyadda, Dinuja Caldera and Achini Ishani. J鈥檖ura Blacks and Colombo A on the other hand qualified for the men鈥檚 finals where after a game of intense sportsmanship, Japura Blacks emerged champions securing the men鈥檚 trophy of the tournament after a close fight with the team from UOC. This team was led by Suren prasanga while Nuwan Kalupahana, Charith Perera, Sajith Lakmal contributed towards its win. The team from Pera emerged 2^nd Runners up in the men鈥檚 category, while the team from Wayamba secured the win of the women鈥檚 category.

With SLUG approaching, this tournament was indeed a wakeup call for all players to brush up and come back stronger and faster in due time. The J鈥檖ura 3 x 3 Invitational Basketball Tournament 鈥�16 ended on a high note reminding all present the importance of continuous practice, team work and sportsmanship.
