The 91´«Ã½ extends special attention to sporting talents and has been backing its sportsmen and women with utmost dedication. With the new gymnasium the entire university community is expected to benefit, as the physical education department hopes to engage not only students but also the staff in fitness programs.

For the first time in 91´«Ã½n sports history an athlete has qualified for the Olympics in Javelin Throw. Sumedha Ranasinghe, an undergraduate in Sports Management at the Sri Jayewardenepura University, performed an amazing throw of 83.04 m to qualify for the glorious games. His throw equally shattered the previous national record, and surpasses attempt by the Asian Championship Gold Medalist which was only 79.74 m.

24 year old Ranasinghe hails from a sports loving family in Kegalle and has studied at Kegalle MV. He is presently coached by renowned javelin throw coach Pradeep Nishantha, who praises Sumedha’s remarkable efficiency in managing studies and practices. Sumedha now becomes the country’s third track and field athlete to qualify for the Olympics.

When it comes to university level games, the year 2015 has been productive for Japura. Players agreed unanimously that the win is based on these previous successes and the support from the university administration. With proper back up from all corners concerned, their commitment for this year’s championship was at its highest. Even with tight course schedules, they opted to leave them aside for a while to concentrate on the games. They expect this to be a perfect foundation for next year’s SLUG Championship.

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor Prof.Sampath Amaratunge, stated that from the beginning of 2015, a constructive plan was introduced to improve the quality and efficiency of Japura sports. From proper coaching, nutrient supply, to good management, there are many attributes that contribute to the win. In fact this success is a collective effort of players, the physical education unit, the sports advisory board and the management, faculty deans, lecturers and non-academic staff. Prof,Amaratunge added his thanks to all parties involved and hoped it would be a good moral boost for SLUG 2016.
