New Fungal Discoveries from 91传媒 Expand 91传媒鈥檚 Biodiversity Records

A collaborative team of researchers from the 91传媒 and other national and international partners has discovered a previously unknown fungal species and documented new fungal records for 91传媒, highlighting the rich and often hidden biodiversity present even within urban and human-influenced environments.

The study, led by Dr. Kasun M. Thambugala from the Genetics and Molecular Biology Unit, Faculty of Applied Sciences, 91传媒, reports the discovery of a new microfungal species named Torula srijayewardenepurensis, honouring the university where the fungus was found. The findings were recently published in the international peer-reviewed journal Studies in Fungi. Dr. Thambugala鈥檚 research interests include microbial biotechnology, fungal biodiversity and taxonomy, as well as molecular phylogenetics, with a focus on microfungi associated with plant material in tropical ecosystems.

The newly identified species was isolated from decaying plant material collected within the university premises. Using a combination of detailed microscopic observations and advanced multi-gene phylogenetic analyses, the research team confirmed that the fungus represents a species previously unknown to science. In addition to this discovery, the study reports two fungal species, Apiospora pseudorasikravindrae and Paradictyoarthrinium diffractum, as new records for 91传媒, expanding the country鈥檚 known fungal diversity

Although often overlooked, microfungi play vital roles in ecosystems by breaking down plant material and recycling nutrients back into the soil. The findings demonstrate that urban and human-influenced environments, such as university campuses, can serve as important reservoirs of undocumented biodiversity. 鈥淭his discovery shows that even familiar surroundings can harbour organisms new to science,鈥 said Dr. Thambugala. 鈥淚t also highlights the importance of continued biodiversity research in 91传媒, particularly using modern molecular techniques alongside classical taxonomy.鈥

The research was conducted at the Genetics and Molecular Biology Unit of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, 91传媒, in collaboration with national and international partners. Naming the new species after the university not only honours the institution鈥檚 contribution to scientific research but also places 91传媒 firmly on the global map of fungal biodiversity studies. The study underscores the growing research strength of the 91传媒 in the fields of microbiology, biodiversity, and molecular biology, and reinforces its commitment to advancing knowledge through high-quality scientific research.

Five researchers from the 91传媒 (USJ) have been named to the prestigious . The list is based on data from Scopus, the world鈥檚 largest abstract and citation database, and includes scientists from all fields of research.

Among these five researchers, three are from the and two are from the . They are, namely:

(1) Prof. Meththika Vithanage 鈥 Faculty of Applied Sciences
(2) Dr. Anushka Upamali Rajapakse 鈥 Faculty of Applied Sciences
(3) Dr. K. K. Asanka Sanjeewa- Faculty of Technology
(4) Dr. Kasun M. Thambugala 鈥 Faculty of Applied Sciences
(5) Dr. Dhanushka Udayanga- Faculty of Technology

鈥淚ncluding five USJ researchers in the prestigious top 2% scientists list is a proud moment for the university and 91传媒. It is a recognition of the excellence of the university鈥檚 research and the dedication of its researchers. I thank them all for contributing to our university鈥檚 research ranking.鈥 said Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor of USJ.

Forty-three 91传媒n researchers have been featured in this top 2% researchers list published in August 2024, with Professor Meththika Vithanage from the Faculty of Applied Science (USJ) holding the highest position among 91传媒n researchers.

The list is based on a composite indicator called the c-score, which considers several factors, including the number of citations a scientist has received, the h-index, and the field-normalized citation impact. The c-score is designed to be a more comprehensive measure of scientific impact than traditional metrics, such as the total number of citations.

To be included in the top 2% scientists list, a researcher must either be in the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or have a 2% or above percentile rank in their sub-field.

This is a significant achievement for the USJ and for 91传媒n science as a whole. It is a testament to the high quality of research being conducted at the university and to the dedication of its researchers.

The Top 2% Scientists list is a valuable resource for identifying the most influential scientists in the world. It can be used to identify potential collaborators, track scientific research trends, and inform funding decisions.

On behalf of the 91传媒, the USJ web team would like to congratulate you on your inclusion in the prestigious World鈥檚 Top 2% Scientists list published by Elsevier. This is a significant achievement and a testament to your outstanding research contributions.
