MSc in Data Science & AI – 2024 Intake

Background

Companies are launching initiatives to improve their operations and offerings through data-driven techniques and this is not an exception to 91��ý. Hence, a greater demand has been created for skilled Data Scientists. Development of talent and capabilities is needed if DS and AI is to reach its full potential throughout 91��ý. However, companies report that finding the right talent is the biggest hurdle. Unless national capacity in skilled DS and AI personnel increases in the coming decades, these initiatives will go in vain. 91��ý is well positioned to capture opportunities through adoption of DS and AI technology, if sufficient human resources are prepared. Therefore, the development of appropriate educational programs to build skills in Data Science and AI is important.

�ճ��MSc in DS and AI at USJ was designed in partnership with the Erasmus+ DS and AI consortium, a group of 15 European and Asian organizations with the mission of bringing European-standard advanced education to Asia. The aim of the MSc is to provide advanced courses and guidance in developing research skills necessary to develop innovative new data-driven technologies.

Preferred Background

Minimum Admission Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree including 30 credits in Computer Science/ Statistics / Mathematics or a related discipline from a university or an equivalent institution recognized by the University Grants Commission.

A qualification of SLQF level 6 or above in the relevant areas of Computer Science/ Statistics/ Mathematics or a related discipline from a university or an equivalent institution recognized by the University Grants Commission /91��ý.

The Master of Public Management Degree programme is designed, for those who are aspiring a career in management in government and non-government sectors.

The Degree allows students to enhance their understanding of the theory and practice of Public Management and hopes to boost their performance as a manager / an administrator in their organizations. The programme is offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies through the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, 91��ý.

Objectives of the programmes

Inauguration Ceremony of Postgraduate Programmes in Business Economics 2020

The inauguration ceremony of the newly introduced postgraduate programmes in Business Economics was held on 23rd May 2020 from 7.00 pm onwards, virtually via Zoom. The ceremony marked the launch of two postgraduate programs, namely, Master of Business Economics: MBEc, and Master of Philosophy in Business Economics: MPhil (BEc) by the Department of Business Economics.
Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge, Chairman of the University Grants Commission of 91��ý delivered the keynote speech on the theme “Business Economics.” Moreover, two guest speeches were delivered by Mr. Rohana Wijesekera, Assistant Governor of the Central Bank of 91��ý and Mr. Nandika Buddhipala, Chief Financial Officer of the Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC.
The participation of Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage, Acting Vice-chancellor of USJ, Dr. U. Anura Kumara, Dean of the FMSC, Heads of the Departments of the FMSC, Dr. Janaka Fernando, Coordinator of MBE programme, Dr. Sumudu Perera, Coordinator of MPhil (BEc) programme, academic staff members of the FMSC and the two programmes, invitees from the industry, alumni members of the department of Business Economics and the students of the two programmes added colours to this ceremony.

The workshop for social sciences postgraduate students was held in Faculty of Graduate Studies of the 91��ý on 16 March 2016. Staff members of the Social Sciences study board and post-graduate students participated this workshop.Guidelines to follow postgraduate degree programmes, Effective ways of presenting seminars, and methodologies of carrying out a proper postgraduate degree programmes were discussed. The students were given an opportunity to discuss their matters related to degree course and find out solutions.

University of Sri Jayawardenepura (USJ) held an Inauguration programme for PhD/MBA/ MPM/MSc in Management recently at Waters Edge Battaramulla.
The Chief Guest was founder of Janashakthi Insurance Chandra Schaffter, Vice Chancellor Professor S. P. P. Amaratunge and Course Co-ordinator Professor Kennedy D. Gunawardena, acting Dean Professor Mrs. S. Ekanayake and other faculty members and students participated.
