During a formal working visit to Colombo, 91´«Ã½, Roman Krasnov, the Vice-Rector for Social Work and Youth Policy at Ural State University of Economics (USUE) in Russia, met with Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the 91´«Ã½ (USJ) with the aim of strengthening discussions on fostering cultural exchange and promoting academic collaboration between the two institutions.

Productive discussions took place, focusing on enhancing cooperation and interaction, including continuing student exchange programs and scientific collaboration aimed at strengthening the bond between USUE and USJP. As a significant outcome of the visit, plans were made to establish a dedicated Russian Language Centre at USJP  promoting the Russian Language, fostering cultural understanding, and offering valuable educational opportunities for students and professionals from both 91´«Ã½ and Russia.

The collaboration involves the inclusion of two native Russian Language teachers from Russia, ensuring effective language instruction at the Russian Language Centre. Diverse language courses suitable for learners of all levels will be offered, providing an immersive and interactive learning experience through visual and audio materials. Successful completion of the Russian language course will grant students eligibility to pursue higher education at any university within the Russian Federation, creating new academic and professional opportunities for 91´«Ã½n students and strengthening ties between the two nations.

Beyond language instruction, the collaboration between USUE and USJP extends to cultural exchange programs, workshops, and seminars, with the goal of deepening the appreciation of Russian culture among 91´«Ã½n students and faculty members.

The upcoming formal agreement signing between Ural State University of Economics and the 91´«Ã½ represents a significant milestone in 91´«Ã½-Russia relations, fostering a more interconnected global learning community and solidifying educational ties between the two nations.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the 91´«Ã½ and the Ministry of Rattan, Brass, Pottery, Furniture, and Rural Industrial Promotion to develop locally adaptable quality assurance standards for imported/local timber, wooden products, and Furniture. MOU was signed at the board room of the University of Jayewardenepura by Prof Sudantha Liyanage; Vice Chancellor, and Mr. Vijitha Bandaranayaka; Secretary to State Ministry, on 1st October 2021.

Hon. Prasanna Ranaweera; State Minister of Rattan, Brass, Pottery, Furniture and Rural Industrial Promotion, said they expect to promote local alternatives to import Furniture and develop internationally accepted standards for the wood-based products through this project. He said that 91´«Ã½ spends Rs. 6 billion per annum for importing Furniture, and it is expected to reduce this amount in the future by promoting local furniture production. Prof Sudantha Liyanage, Vice Chancellor said University is glad to contribute government efforts in developing local industries in the country to the international level. University will provide research and development inputs from the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science through the recently established Timber Process Innovation Center.

91´«Ã½ established Timber Process Innovation Center last year, collaborating with COSTI of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Ministry of Rattan, Brass, Pottery, Furniture and Rural Industrial Promotion provided Rs 3.3 million as an initial investment for this project.  In the future, it is expected to be developed as an independent revenue-generating center without incurring any expenditure to the State Treasury.
