鈥淭he stigma and discrimination experienced by COVID-19 patients in society, workplaces, and healthcare facilities have serious negative consequences in 91传媒 at both the individual and family levels. In this regard, irresponsible media reporting and sensationalism of news coverage leading to breaching of privacy and confidentiality, defaming and false allegations without consent have been identified as the main drivers of discrimination.鈥 said听听 Therefore, regulations on responsible media reporting, including an effective risk communication strategy to counteract its effects, are strongly recommended. Moreover, support strategies should be put in place for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 aimed at coping with fear and anxiety and dealing with stigma, even after recovery.

A research was carried out to gain insight and explore the depth and complexity of COVID-19 patients鈥 experiences听 and to explore the experiences, and main driving forces of stigma and discrimination among COVID-19 patients, following hospital discharge, in 91传媒. The study was led by and of Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, 91传媒

Out of the sample of 139 COVID-19 patients, the majority of participants were men (n录80; 57.6%), with a mean age of 43 years (SD录11.2). In total, up to one-third of the study participants experienced stigma related to COVID-19 and were discriminated against by the community, co-workers and healthcare workers in 91传媒. Social discrimination included barriers in accessing basic needs, insulting, blaming, defaming, spreading rumours and receiving no support during emergencies. Workplace discrimination included loss of jobs, not allowing re-entry and loss of earnings due to self-employment. Discrimination by healthcare workers included breaching of confidentiality, lack of respect, not providing health services and communication barriers. Discrimination has led to social isolation, not seeking help and severe psychosocial issues impacting their family relationships. Irresponsible media reporting and sensationalism of news coverage leading to breaching of privacy and confidentiality, defaming, false allegations and reporting household details without consent were perceived as the main factors underlying the views and opinions of the general public.

Psychological problems are a growing concern these days. It鈥檚 not a rare case that we see on the news that the youth of the nation especially young students make bad decisions in life. Students are increasingly struggling with emotional and behavioral problems that affect their learning. Studies have shown that the number of victims of these issues is far worse than that of the last decade and its growing year by year.听 Therefore it鈥檚 vital to keep a good mental condition for the wellbeing of students and eventually to succeed with their education.

The chief medical officer of the 91传媒 Medical Center,听Dr. S.K. Hettiarachchi states that students need to have a good knowledge of the symptoms of an unhealthy mental condition so that timely action can be taken whenever such symptoms are noticed. These actions can in turn save their own lives or a colleague鈥檚 life. He specifically stated that a person needs to be more careful if several of these following symptoms are occurring.

Constantly in a worrying mood
problems in concentration, memory or logical thought and speech
Unhappiness without a justified cause
Loosing temper easily and often
Sleeping difficulties/ insomnia
Abrupt fluctuations in moods/ 鈥渕ood swings鈥
Disliking others continuously
Prefer isolation/ social withdrawal and loss of interest in others
Disturbed excessively in an incident
Getting scared for unjustifiable causes and heightened sensitivity
Thinking as himself always right and the other person is wrong
Aches and pains without a physical cause

Dr. Hettiarachchi giving an important message, asked every university student to be alert on this and if they are having several of the above symptoms, students should not hesitate to get the assistance of Sri Jayewardenepura University Medical Center.
The University Medical Center has always been providing their friendly service to the university students, treating both physical illnesses and, psychological and personal problems.听 They can be contacted through phone or even by SMS at the number stated below.
