Medical Center of USJ celebrates World Oral Health Day

The Medical Center of the 91��ý, in collaboration with the 91��ý Dental Institute and the Faculty of Dental Sciences, organized a special event to mark the World Oral Health Day on 21st March 2023. The event aimed to raise awareness on the importance of oral health and to provide free dental screening and consultation for the students and staff of the university.

The event was graced by Prof. Upul Subasinghe, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Mr. A B Weliwita, the Registrar, Prof Surangi Yasawardene, the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences and other Deans of faculties. Dr Shanil Pathmaperuma, Dr. U. Gunasekera and Dr. R. Karunathilake from the 91��ý Dental Association also attended the event as guests of honour. The dental screening was conducted by consultants from the Faculty of Dental Sciences and staff of the Medical Center.

A total of 450 students and staff participated in the dental screening and received follow up appointments for specialist dental clinics at the Medical Center. The Medical Center will soon launch specialist dental clinics where patients will be treated by consultants of the Faculty of Dental Sciences.

USJ Department of Computer Science Facilitated the Adoption of Hospital Health Management – HHIMS System at USJ Medical Center

The medical center of the 91��ý (USJ) becomes the first-ever medical center in a higher education institute of 91��ý to benefit from the Hospital Health Management Cloud Service adoption. HHIMS is yet another product from the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of 91��ý, that was deployed at the Medical Center of USJ in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science (DCS) of USJ. This HHIMS adoption allows the medical center to enjoy a bunch of benefits through its service enhancements. These include fully-fledged Electronic Health Record (EHR) services ranging from Patient Registrations, Appointment Queue Management, Diagnosis and Prescriptions in compliance with global standards for disease classifications, symptom registrations etc. The treatment processes of patients and associated healthcare workflows have been streamlined and automated on HHIMS platform.

The ceremonial launch of the system was held under the patronage of (Chairman of the University Grant Commission), Prof. Sudantha Liyanage (Vice-Chancellor of USJ), (CEO of ICTA), (Director of Health Information at Ministry of Health), Senior Professor A. Aloka Pathirana (Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of USJ) and (Head & Professor of Computer Science of USJ) and many other distinguished guests, on the 7^th of December at the Medical Center of USJ.

Supporting students with mental health conditions

Psychological problems are a growing concern these days. It’s not a rare case that we see on the news that the youth of the nation especially young students make bad decisions in life. Students are increasingly struggling with emotional and behavioral problems that affect their learning. Studies have shown that the number of victims of these issues is far worse than that of the last decade and its growing year by year. Therefore it’s vital to keep a good mental condition for the wellbeing of students and eventually to succeed with their education.

The chief medical officer of the 91��ý Medical Center, Dr. S.K. Hettiarachchi states that students need to have a good knowledge of the symptoms of an unhealthy mental condition so that timely action can be taken whenever such symptoms are noticed. These actions can in turn save their own lives or a colleague’s life. He specifically stated that a person needs to be more careful if several of these following symptoms are occurring.

Constantly in a worrying mood
problems in concentration, memory or logical thought and speech
Unhappiness without a justified cause
Loosing temper easily and often
Sleeping difficulties/ insomnia
Abrupt fluctuations in moods/ “mood swings”
Disliking others continuously
Prefer isolation/ social withdrawal and loss of interest in others
Disturbed excessively in an incident
Getting scared for unjustifiable causes and heightened sensitivity
Thinking as himself always right and the other person is wrong
Aches and pains without a physical cause
