Students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Technology and Department of Mechanical and Materials Technology showcased their innovative projects at 91´«Ã½â€™s first International Industry Expo – 2024. Held from June 19 to 23 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo, the event gathered industry leaders and innovators from around the world.

Highlighting the success of our participants, 3rd year student D.G.N.K. Madhusanka, specializing in Energy and Environmental Technology, secured the 1st place in the category of IT innovations with his groundbreaking project, “Gammasell.com.”

We are proud to present the remarkable achievements of our students at the expo. Their projects not only impressed the attendees but also showcased the diverse range of talents and innovative solutions developed within our faculty. Here are some of the standout projects and the brilliant minds behind them:

  6. A. Withanage, P.D. Tharaka – Autonomous Vision Based Robot System for Assist Emasculation of Abelmoschus- esculentus(okra) plant and Diseases Assessment
  7. A.S.K. Ranawaka, R.A.S.L. Ranaweera – Fully Automatic Wire Stripping and Crimping Machine
  8. A.D.B. Sandaruwan – Intelligent Ultrasonic Tacking Machine for Apparel Industry
  9. W.T.M.C. Tharukarathne – Development of high-calorie briquettes from pine needles char and pine resin, for biomass boiler
  10. M.R.B. Weerasekara – Development of smart phone based water turbidity monitoring system
  11. M. Malkanthi – Development of seawater activated primary battery through Electrode Design and Material Selection
  12. M.S.M. Dissanayaka – Analyzing the properties of fire briquettes produced from utilizing different waste materials of corn plant

Their participation not only demonstrated their skills and knowledge but also attracted significant attention from industry professionals, opening up valuable opportunities for future collaborations and career advancements.

In a groundbreaking event that marked a new chapter in 91´«Ã½â€™s academic landscape, the 91´«Ã½ hosted the first-ever TEDx event organized by a university in the country. The  held at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Technology’s on August 29, 2023, brought together a diverse group of speakers who shared their ideas on innovation, entrepreneurship, social justice, and more.

Under the leadership of Prof. Lasith Gunawardena and Prof. Ruwani Nilushi Nugara, the  played a pivotal role in orchestrating this milestone event. In accordance with TED guidelines the event showcased eleven speakers with two TEDTalks videos, fostering profound discussions and connections among attendees.

The event speaker lineup featured distinguished figures from various faculties of the university, each bringing their expertise to the forefront:

Prof. Hiran Amarasekera, a leading figure in Forestry and Environmental Science, as well as the founder of the USJ Startup Hub shared his ideas on “Fostering startup culture among undergraduates and graduates in universities.â€

Prof. Neelika Malavige, an accomplished academic, researcher, and scientist, highlighted her work in Immunology and Molecular Sciences, along with her and her group’s significant contributions to the Global Dengue Program through her talk on “Survival of the Kindest.â€

Prof. Prasad M. Jayaweera, a celebrated scholar in the field of Computer Science who is also serving as the Founder Dean of the Faculty of Computing delivered a talk on “Tackling manifold aspects of reality†with insights into several models to solve complex societal and wicked problems.

Prof. Nithushi Samaranayake, is a Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, shared her passion in training and research activities related to medication safety through a talk titled “The three ‘R’s in medicine use.â€

Dr. Madhubhashini Disanayaka Ratnayake, an academic, creative writer, and translator discussed her work in literature, translation, and projects to enhance English language teaching nationally in her talk titled “What is education?â€

Dr. Priyake Palipana, a consultant in Restorative Dentistry who is currently serving as the Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Faculty of Dental Sciences. His years of experience in the field of Restorative Dentistry was shared in his talk on “Teeth and Smile in Proportion.â€

Dr. Dulini Yasara Mudunkotuwa, the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, showcased her journey as a researcher, particularly her involvement in establishing an Advanced Engineering Simulation Center and maker space for sustainable product development through her talk on “Learn by doing: How we engineer the innovators of tomorrow.â€

Dr. Erandi Pathirana, a veterinarian and researcher, brought attention to her studies on the impact of climate change on marine life, emphasizing the critical relationship between the environment and the genetics of aquatic organisms in her talk titled “Marine Microbiome: The fascinating world within our oceans.â€

Dr. Lanka Undugoda, a Senior Lecturer in Biosystems Technology, shared her innovative research on phytoremediation—exploiting leaf-dwelling microorganisms to degrade air pollutants—contributing to environmental sustainability in her talk on “Unsung heroes of environmentalism.â€

Mr. Sachin Wijayasinghe, an academic and public speaker, explored the intersection of development economics and sports, advocating for the transformative power of sports in promoting social change. His speech was titled “Smart cities beyond technology: Let’s stick to our values.â€

Ms. Senara Vidanapathirana, is an accomplished fourth year medical undergraduate, debater, and a public speaker who won the esteemed “Best Communicator†award among university undergraduates at the “Japura Employability Skills Awards 2022â€. She shared her journey of life in a talk titled “Rediscovering yourself: navigating the turbulent seas of passion and purpose.â€

The event wasn’t just about ideas on stage; it marked a significant shift in how academia engages with the broader community. By embracing the TEDx platform, the 91´«Ã½ demonstrated its commitment to fostering dialogue, innovation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

TEDxUSriJayewardenepura served as a testament to the power of ideas and their ability to transcend boundaries. As the first university organized TEDx event in 91´«Ã½, it set the stage for future discussions, connections, and the continued exploration of innovative solutions to the challenges of our time.

The Recorded Videos will be Uploaded to the TEDx YouTube Channel is due course. The event was supported by I-Lab Project of the Faculty of Engineering, TIIKM Events as a Equipment Provider,. The at the 91´«Ã½ is committed to fostering innovative concepts and originality among university academics. In line with this mission, the UBL Cell has introduced a Patent Consultation and a Drawing Service which aim to provide valuable resources and assistance, ensuring that innovations are brought to the limelight with due recognition while effectively protecting its Intellectual Property (IP) rights.

The UBL Cell has teamed up with Nithya Partners, a well-known intellectual property law firm, to provide an instrumental Patent Consultation Service to skilled innovators and front runners. The team is well-equipped with notable professionals in various fields to assist academics with their ground-breaking research findings and refreshing innovations towards a successful patenting process that will transform into thriving ventures. The patent consultation service is provided with the kind assistance of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) through the MoU with USJ, initiated by the Innovation, Invention, and Venture Creation Council (IIVCC, USJ).

In addition to the Patent Consultation Service, the UBL Cell has also announced that it will offer a Drawing Service. This service is intended to enhance the visual representation of novel products and inventions, emphasizing their unique features and functionalities. The Drawing Service of the UBL aims to guide academics in using various 2D, 3D, and visualization software to make their innovations more understandable and captivating, thereby obtaining increased exposure from the industry.

Thus, all staff members are encouraged to make the utmost use of these treasured initiatives to ensure the precise protection and effective showcasing of inventions, while maximizing their impact and potential.
