Researchers from the Faculties of Applied Sciences, Medical, Technology, Engineering, Management, and Graduate Studies published 37 research papers in journals indexed by Elsevier Scopus during the months of May and June 2023. Fifty two researchers from different departments of USJ contributed to this achievement.

The Innovate 91΄«Γ½ 2021/2022 awards ceremony took place recently, at the Senate board room of the 91΄«Γ½. The event, organized by the of the University, was a celebration of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among the staff and students of the University.Β 

The competition garnered an overwhelming response, with 202 innovation proposals received during the first stage. These proposals showcased the immense talent and innovative potential of the University’s community. After a meticulous selection process, 59 projects were chosen to advance to the highly anticipated second round.Β  Out of them the IIVC Council provided funding for 31 projects under the USJ Innovation Grants Scheme, enabling their creators to transform their ideas into reality. The competition was carried out across 10 Special Interest Groups or specialization areas, with the top winners in SIGs being selected for a final round for deciding on overall winners. The second round was judged by a panel of independent judges nominated by the 91΄«Γ½ Inventor’s Commission.

The awards ceremony welcomed esteemed guests, including the Chairman of the University Grant Commission, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, who served as the chief guest. Prof. Amaratunge was not only a key figure in the initiation of the IIVC Council but also the visionary behind the Innovate 91΄«Γ½ competition itself. The event was also attended by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Upul Subasinghe, CEO of the 91΄«Γ½ Inventor’s Commission, Mr.Β  N. M. Dolawatte, Deans of the faculties, and members of the IIVC Council, adding further prestige to the occasion.

The event recognized the pioneering service carried out by Prof. Sampath Amaratunge as the founder executive chairman, and Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda and Prof. A. H. L. R. Nilmini as founder co-chairs of the IIVCC.Β 

The highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of the overall winners. The project “Sani-Fly” – a public washroom management and tracking solution” emerged on earning the coveted title of the competition’s top innovation. The students of the project team consisted of Pramuk Hewawasam, Ishara Thennakoon, Dinuka Wijesundara and Nipuni Fernando from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

The Second Place was won by the project titled β€œDevelopment of a novel yoghurt product incorporated with selected spices and seaweed, to hinder glycemic impact” carried out by the team of Dr. K. W. Madura Jayaaainghe, P. DayaniΒ  and R. Priyathasini of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.Β 

The third place was won by the project titled β€œDevelopment of nitrite-free herbal sausage using natural ingredients” carried out by the team of Dr. A. M. A. U. Alahakoon, G. T. Piumi Prabodya, K. P. Sewwandi Nuwan Kumari, A. M. Nishadi Anuruddika , R. M. Dilini Navida Prabashini from the Faculty of Technology.

This year marked the second edition of Innovate 91΄«Γ½, further solidifying its status as a platform that nurtures and promotes innovation within the University. The event was sponsored by the I lab grant of the Faculty of Engineering funded by the STHRDP project. The IIVC Council, co-chaired by Prof. Lasith Gunawardena and Dr. Nilushi Nugara supported by Dr. Dulini Mudunkotuwa as Secretary and Ms. Chathuri Wasundara as RA, played a crucial role in driving this competition and awards ceremony forward.

This event marks another successful chapter in the University’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and pushing boundaries for a better future.

The NeuroX project, developed by undergraduates from the 91΄«Γ½, was honored as the National Level Runner Up and Provincial Level Winner in the category of Best Innovative Product/Project – University at the SLASSCOM National Ingenuity Awards 2023. The event took place on 15th June at the Shangri-la Hotel.

NeuroX, the line drawing magician, is a device designed to identify neurological disorders using a line drawing technique and a modularized platform. It serves as a tool for detecting neurological diseases with a single stroke of art created using an electronic pen on a graphic tablet. Acting as a mediator between the patient and physician, this device allows the user and the physician to draw conclusions about the user’s health status based on the results obtained.

Chenura Fernando, the team leader of Team IdeaLabs, along with team members Madhawa Maduranga, Romenia Silva, Nishama Vilochana, and Shameema Joonoos, attribute this achievement to the dedication of each team member and the unwavering guidance and support received from the lecturers at the University, especially Dr. Ravimal Bandara, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Ravindra De Silva, the Head of the Department of Computer Science, and Prof. Lasith Gunawardena, Head of the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

The SLASSCOM National Ingenuity Awards 2023 aims to recognize exceptional talent and innovation within the industry. We wholeheartedly congratulate all the deserving winners who have set new standards for the younger generation to aspire to!

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the 91΄«Γ½ and the Ministry of Rattan, Brass, Pottery, Furniture, and Rural Industrial Promotion to develop locally adaptable quality assurance standards for imported/local timber, wooden products, and Furniture. MOU was signed at the board room of the University of Jayewardenepura by Prof Sudantha Liyanage; Vice Chancellor, and Mr. Vijitha Bandaranayaka; Secretary to State Ministry, on 1st October 2021.

Hon. Prasanna Ranaweera; State Minister of Rattan, Brass, Pottery, Furniture and Rural Industrial Promotion, said they expect to promote local alternatives to import Furniture and develop internationally accepted standards for the wood-based products through this project. He said that 91΄«Γ½ spends Rs. 6 billion per annum for importing Furniture, and it is expected to reduce this amount in the future by promoting local furniture production. Prof Sudantha Liyanage, Vice Chancellor said University is glad to contribute government efforts in developing local industries in the country to the international level. University will provide research and development inputs from the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science through the recently established Timber Process Innovation Center.

91΄«Γ½ established Timber Process Innovation Center last year, collaborating with COSTI of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Ministry of Rattan, Brass, Pottery, Furniture and Rural Industrial Promotion provided Rs 3.3 million as an initial investment for this project.Β  In the future, it is expected to be developed as an independent revenue-generating center without incurring any expenditure to the State Treasury.

Prof. Hiran Amarasekera (Professor in Forestry and Environmental Science), Β Prof. Priyan Perera and Mr. Rajitha Lakshan Rupasinghe (Department of Forestry and Environment Science, 91΄«Γ½), andΒ  Mr. Buddika Lakmal (Director Development), Mr. Priyantha Madukumara (Private Secretary to Hon Minister), Mr. Buddhi Jayasinghe (Coordinator Secretary to Hon Minister) from the State Ministry participated this event.
