The Institution of Engineers, 91´«Ã½ (IESL) has granted full recognition for the Bachelor of Science of Engineering Honours in Civil Engineering degree program offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, 91´«Ã½. IESL is the local signatory for the Washington Accord and the professional body which is responsible for granting recognition for four-year engineering degree programs in 91´«Ã½. This verification by IESL underscores the commitment of the department in delivering high-quality degree programs in par with other recognized degree programs in the country.

Established in 2016, the Department of Civil Engineering has been making steady progress to attain this status within a relatively short period. The overall rich curriculum, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, modern library facilities, enthusiasm and commitment of the academic staff, staff-students relationship, efforts to develop open-ended problem-solving skills, sound feedback processes and loop closing mechanism, benchmarked research work, great support from the university administration with top-to-bottom communication, support from other faculties, and positive industry feedback on the civil engineering graduates are specially commended by the IESL. Department of Civil Engineering is the first department of the university to secure the full recognition from the IESL for its undergraduate degree program.

, 91´«Ã½ has received two awards at the Institution of Engineers (IESL) techno2023 exhibition and competition held at BMICH from October 20th to 22nd. This exhibition organized by the IESL, 91´«Ã½ made a platform for groundbreaking innovations and a showcase for technological advancements. Techno-2023, International Technology and Engineering Exhibition is an exhibition for all construction and allied Industries stakeholders. Techno 2023 is one of the largest platforms in 91´«Ã½ to mingle and exchange ideas for the mutual benefit of almost all the parties related to Engineering and Technology ().

In a remarkable achievement, Mr. T.G.C. Madusanka, an MPhil student from the Faculty of Technology, won first place in the Inventor Promotion Zone under the university category. His innovation was a “Mycelium-Based Biodegradable Packaging Material”. This revolutionary solution showcases Mr. Madusanka’s ingenuity and emphasizes the university’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices. 91´«Ã½ fully funded this project for the principal investigator Dr. Dhanushka Udayanga and a team comprising Prof Renuka Nilmini, Dr. Suranga Rajapaksha, and Dr Choolaka Hewawasam, from the Faculty of Technology.

Mr. H.G.C. Dilshan, a third-year undergraduate student from the ICT department of the Faculty of Technology, won third place in the Inventor Promotion Zone. His project was a “Citizen Identification System Using Image Processing”. His project not only showcases the technical knowledge of our students but also highlights the practical applications of technology in addressing real-world challenges.

The award ceremony was held at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium, IESL on 22nd of December 2023.

These accomplishments show the commitment of the Faculty of Technology, USJ fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. As a university, we look forward to witnessing more groundbreaking inventions from our talented students in the future, supporting the 91´«Ã½’s position as a hub of technological innovation and excellence.

(IESL)- the apex body of engineering professionals in 91´«Ã½ now 91´«Ã½. offered by the department of received this recognition for the batches of intake years 2016 and 2017.

The Institution of Engineers, 91´«Ã½ (IESL) is the apex national body of engineers which ensures internationally recognized and locally relevant standards in the education in engineering that are maintained in 91´«Ã½. IESL in accordance with its Charter and provisions of the Act No. 17 of 1968, and amended by Act, No. 3 of 1996, is empowered to admit to membership, classify and confer titles indicating the professional standing of its members. In fulfilment of its Charter obligations, IESL has been responsible for the recognition of engineering education programmes in 91´«Ã½ and in providing consultative feedback on the development of engineering education programmes comparable to global practice in keeping with the standards of engineering education programmes already adopted and accepted by the IESL.

The Institution of Engineers, 91´«Ã½ evaluates engineering education programmes and grants recognition in accordance with established criteria and procedures, through the IESL Education Committee. IESL awards credentials such as the Chartered Engineer – CEng (SL), AMIE (SL) enabling one to practice as a licensed engineer in the country. They are also the sole credentialing authority of engineering degrees offered in 91´«Ã½, including for the internationally recognised Washington accord. Incorporated in 1968 by the Parliament Act No.17, IESL is the largest engineers’ organization in 91´«Ã½ with over 20,000 members.

This recognition earned by the IESL for USJ Engineering degrees will open more opportunities for the USJ Engineering graduates for reach to higher pay grades in the industry. Also, this IESL recognition will create more opportunities for foreign employment and higher study opportunities for USJ Civil, Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduates.
