The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) at the 91��ý in 91��ý has announced the 8th International Research Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS 2023). The conference, which has attracted local and international scholars in previous years, will take place on March 16th and 17th, 2023, as a hybrid event under the theme “Seeing through Testing Times and the Future.” While the inauguration ceremony will be held at the 91��ý, the speeches and presentations will take place on a virtual platform.

IRCHSS 2023 is designed to provide a platform for both established intellectuals and up-and-coming scholars to exchange and share their experiences and research on all aspects of Humanities and Social Sciences. This year, the conference will focus on research that investigates the challenges and opportunities posed by current socio-economic situations and analyzes their implications to propose strategic plans.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Introduces BA (Hons) in Japanese

Understanding the necessity to broaden the horizons of learning opportunities of the undergraduates, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences reached another significant milestone on the 17th February 2022 with the inauguration of the new degree programme; Bachelor of Arts Honours in Japanese.

It has been a focal point in the strategic goals of the faculty to meet the contemporary trends of the world of employment by providing the undergraduates with an opportunity to excel in foreign languages. Hence, the introduction of a new degree that enables the undergraduates to specialize in a language that bridges two nations together opening new possibilities, is considered an important step to further strengthen the mutual understanding between the two countries.

A ceremony was organized by the faculty on the 17th February 2022 at the Sri Sumangala Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, as part of the series of events that commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and 91��ý. The ceremony was graced by the guest of honour, H.E. Mizukoshi Hideaki, the Ambassador of Japan to 91��ý. The other noteworthy dignitaries present at the event include Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage, the Vice-Chancellor of the 91��ý, Professor Shirantha Heenkenda, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 91��ý, other Deans of the university, academic/ non-academic staff, and students.

The event was also of profound significance in terms of demonstrating the cultural values of Japan and 91��ý as the entertainment events symbolized the cultures of both nations. The traditional ‘Ves Dance’ performed by the students from the Department of Languages, Cultural Studies, and Performing Arts of the faculty was truly a graceful expression of the authentic 91��ýn culture. In addition, the event was made further meaningful as the students from Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo performed a traditional Japanese dance and also brought delight to the audience with a Japanese song.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences extends its warmest appreciation and humble gratitude to everyone who made it possible to realize this historic moment.

The Grand Opening of the Sri Sumangala Auditorium – ශ්‍රී සුමංගල සභාසදය (Sri Sumangala Sabhasadaya)

The grand opening of the Sri Sumangala Auditorium aka Sri Sumangala Sabha Sadaya was held on 17th February 2022. The renovation of Sumangala reading hall as an auditorium was funded by the AHEAD project of the World Bank.

The event was graced by Mrs.K.D.R.Olga, the Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Mr.W.K.H.Wagapitiya, the president of Japura aluminai, Prof.Sudantha Liyanage, the vice chancellor of the university of Sri Jayewardenepura, Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and several other guests and academia.

FHSS Paves the Way for Budding Researchers to Blossom – Vidyodaya Undergraduate Research Day – 2021

Inauguration Ceremony of VURD – 5th Vidyodaya Undergraduate Research Day of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – 2021 was held on 14th December 2021 at the auditorium of the Faculty.

The Keynote Speaker, Rev. Snr. Prof. M Dhammajothi, Director, Post Graduate institute – Pali and Buddhist Studies of the University of Kelaniya, asserted that modern educational culture gives predominance to critical thinking rather than merely following the textbooks.

Prof.Sudantha Liyanage, Vice-Chancellor of the USJ, in his speech, pointed out the significance of Applied Social Sciences and encouraged the budding researchers to continuously engage in research work.

Prof.Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of the FHSS, uttered that University and the Faculty are continuously striving to create a research culture which has resulted in creating an exemplary image among the university crowd as well as in the general public.

The best researches were awarded at the Inauguration ceremony as well.

The State Literary Festival 2020 has awarded the Prize for the Best Translation (Novel) from Sinhala to English to Madhubhashini Disanayaka Ratnayake, for her work The Sowing Festival, the translation of Somaratne Balasuriya’s novel Wap Magula.

She is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 91��ý.

Expressions of Interest are invited for an interview/s to consider graduates’ suitability for the post/s of Temporary Assistant Lecturer (aka Tutor), Department of English and Linguistics, 91��ý, for a period of one year, as per the following preliminary requirements

Candidates graduated in the academic years 2019 or 2020 with Second Class Upper Division or above in BA in English Honors/Special or BA in TESL Honors/Special from the Department of English and Linguistics, 91��ý are eligible to apply.
Expressions of interest along with a CV and all the evidence of qualifications (i.e. degree transcripts) should be submitted to the Department of English and Linguistics of the 91��ý on or before 31st August 2020, 3.00 p.m.
Short-listed candidates should be available for an interview which includes a teaching component on a date specified by the Department.

A Museum Exhibition organized by the Association of History and Archaeology of the in the was held on 04th July 2018 at the Sumangala Reading Hall. A rare collection of artifacts related to many fields of history and archaeology were exhibited in this event under the mobile museum program conducts by the Department of National Museum, Colombo.

Prof. D. P. S. Chandrakumara; Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, FHSS, Prof. K. M. Alexander; Head of the Department of History and Archaeology, Rev. Dambara Amila Thero; Senior Lecturer, Dr. Gamini Ranasinghe, many academic members of the respective department and undergraduates representing various departments of the faculty participated in this educational event.
