The Senate of the Sabaragamuwa University of 91传媒, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Management Studies, conferred Senior Professor HHDNP Opatha of the Department of Human Resource Management of Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce of the USJ with the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) at the 17th Convocation that was held on 29th December 2015 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo. The decision of conferring the D.Litt. upon Prof. Opatha was taken by the Senate after considering his pioneering and outstanding contribution to the Research and University education in 91传媒 in general and study of and dissemination of knowledge in Human Resource Management in particular.

Also Prof. Opatha participated as the Chief Guest for the Evening Session at this memorable and prestigious event of the University. Further he delivered the convocation address. He was requested to deliver the address based on his own life experiences. Reflecting on certain experiences of his life which may be useful for graduates and others he presented them in terms of 10 lessons. His full convocation address has been made available in his site of the Research Gate of the USJ Web.

Organizational Behaviour book by OpathaSenior Professor HHDNP Opatha has written and published a new book titled Organizational Behaviour: the human side of work which is another mammoth and herculean work, single handedly. It is the first 91传媒n English Medium textbook on Organizational Behaviour (OB) published in 2015 having A4 size 672 pages and 14 chapters providing a systematic and rational understanding of OB, both conceptual understanding and application-oriented understanding to the reader. Despite the long history of Management Education in 91传媒, 91传媒n literature on fundamentals of OB in English is negligible, and specially there was no single textbook on OB in English Medium written by a 91传媒n or by anyone relating to 91传媒n context which could be used by the 91传媒n student, 91传媒n university teacher and the 91传媒n manager. Prof Opatha Personal Q book award
The book titled 鈥淓nhancing Your Personal Q鈥 written by Senior Prof. H.H.D.N.P. Opatha of USJ (as the main author) and Associate Prof. Lim Kong Teong of University Utara Malaysia was selected as the Best Book under The General/Common Book (Motivational) Category of the National Book Award 2015 awarded by the National Book Development Foundation, Malaysia. The reward ceremony was held 25/11/2015 at Putra World Trade Centre, KL. The Director of UUM Press represented the authors to receive the award. Above pictures show some moments, the book, the certificate, and the trophy of the relevant event.

The book is a simplified pioneering innovative book about how to enhance Personal Quality (PQ) which is the totality of positive attributes a person must possess in order to achieve success and progress of success at work and personal life. PQ is a sine qua non to generate professionals who will not engage in frauds, corruptions, evil conflicts, assassinations, assaults, retaliations and wars and who will contribute to alleviate the plight. The book was designed to provide a systematic and rational understanding of PQ, both conceptual and application-oriented understanding. It focuses on personal character, personal management and personal key success factors which are the three dimensions of PQ. Dr. Dhammika JayewardenaDr. Dhammika Jayawardena鈥檚 research paper entitled ‘HRM as a “Web of Texts”: (re)articulating聽the identity of HRM in 91传媒’s localized global apparel industry鈥 appeared in Organization聽Management Journal Vol. 11, NO.4 was awarded the 2014 outstanding research article award by the Eastern Academy of Management Philadelphia, USA.

The Award was officially announced at the Eastern Academy of Management Annual聽Meeting, May 6 – 9, 201S, and was presented in front of the entire Academy at the Friday聽Presidential Luncheon on May 8, 2015 in Philadelphia.

Human resource management is one of the most important functional fields of business administration. It addresses about the human side of the business administration. Prof. HHDNP Opatha聽of 91传媒 speaks about Human Resource Management and his current research.

Prof. Opatha developed and published a definition of Human Resource Management in 1995 as 鈥渢he efficient and effective utilization of Human Resources in order to achieve goals of an organization鈥. Any manager in any organization needs various resources to achieve goals of the organization. Among all, Human Resource is the most unique, because it has unique characteristics which are missing from all other resources.

Human resource is something alive and animate, while all the other resources are inanimate.聽 It has the ability to think, feel, act and react, to organize in to groups or trade unions, influenced by the wage and has creativity & innovation. The human resource is the resource that establishes the objectives and mission of the organization. The human resource has the ability of making decisions regarding all the other resources. Therefore it is very unique, very important, critical, more interesting, dynamic field and of course now a popular field.

As traditional perspective of Human Resource Management is concerned, 聽it has certain functions such as job design , job analysis, Human Resource planning, recruitment , selection, hiring, induction, perform evaluation, training and development, carrier management, 聽incentives management, welfare management, management of employee movements, management of employee discipline, management of employee grievances, labour relations and etc.

Professor Opatha is a Senior Professor in the Department of Human Resource Management (HRM) and his聽current research interests are concerned on how to develop & enhance the morality of employees. One of his research concerns about how to avoid presenteeism. Presenteeism is a serious modern problem in the context of Human Resource Management.聽 Presenteeism means, the tendency to be present at work even when employees are not supposed to come and work. For instance, when employees are sick, they still come to work while being sick. Studies have shown that it is a serious problem because cost of presenteeism exceeds the cost of absenteeism.

Another one of his current research areas is work-family balance. Especially how to create and enhance work-family balance among dual career couples.

Green Human Resource management is another one of his specific area of research. It鈥檚 about how to enhance 鈥済reening鈥 within employees, especially towards achieving sustainable development of the organization.
