The Faculty of Technology at the 91传媒 successfully hosted the Inaugural Ceremony of the International Conference on Circular Economy and Bioenergy on December 7, 2023. The event, titled “Transitioning to a Sustainable Future: Summit on Research-Based Education in Circular Economy and Bioenergy,” took place at the Grand Ballroom of the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo.

Dr. P.A Koliyabandara delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the conference. The opening remarks shed light on NORPART, the Norwegian Partnership Programme for Global Academic Cooperation, emphasizing the significance of international collaboration in academic pursuits.

The Dean of the Faculty of Technology, 91传媒, shared insights in an address, highlighting the importance of the conference theme. Keynote addresses were delivered by esteemed speakers Prof. Mohan Munasinghe and Dr. Chithral Ambawatte, adding depth to the discussions on circular economy and bioenergy.

The third International Conference on Innovation and Emerging Technologies () took place on November 23rd-24th, 2023, hosted by the at the 91传媒. The conference, held under the theme “Sustainable Technologies for Economic Resilience,” provided a dynamic platform for experts and innovators to share insights into smart technologies across diverse fields.

Adding to the academic prestige, Senior Professor Sampath Amarathunga, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), and Senior Professor Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice-Chancellor of the University, graced the conference with their presence. The deans of faculties at USJ also actively participated.

Distinguished keynote speakers graced the event, including Senior Professor P.B.R. Dissanayake, a leading figure in civil engineering and the President of the Institution of Engineers in 91传媒. Dr. Ajantha S. Atukorale, Director of the University of Colombo School of Computing and President of the Computer Society of 91传媒, also shared valuable perspectives. Additionally, Mr. Kasun Jayamaha, Head of IT at Unilever 91传媒, contributed insights from the corporate sector.

Beijing Forestry University (BFU) is a national public university centered in Beijing, China. The BFU has a history that dates back to 1902 as one of the earliest colleges with a specialty in Forestry. It is the top university in China for ecological and environmental education. Beijing Forestry University provides a wide range of courses such as Automation, Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Computer science, Economics, Electronics, Environmental Science, Forestry, Languages, Laws, Management, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology. The university is now providing modern technologies for people to protect the earth, in order to share its environmental friendly perspective to the world.

The BFU has 18 schools based on various disciplines such as Arts and Design, Biological Sciences and Technology, Economics and Management, Environmental Science and Engineering, Foreign Languages, Forestry, Humanities and Social Sciences, Information Science and Technology, Landscape Architecture, Material Science, Continuing Education, Science, Soil and Water Conservation, Ecology and Nature Conservation, Marixism, Grassland Science, International Education as well as for Technology.

The delegates of Beijing Forestry University visited the 91传媒 (USJ) on last 25th聽of October with the intention of entering a Memorandum of Understanding. Mr. XIE Xuewen-Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Secretary, Party Committee at BFU, Mr. YANG Xiaodong 鈥 Director, Logistics Support Department, Mr. LI Liang 鈥 Deputy Director, International Relations Office, Mr. WANG Chuping 鈥 Section Chief, University Office, Mr. Gong Rui 鈥 Director of TTESC and Ms. Xue Xiao 鈥 Interpreter of TTESC joined as the delegates representing Beijing Forestry University. Senior Prof. M.M. Pathmalal-the Vice-Chancellor of 91传媒 warmly welcomed them. Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera-the Dean of the Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda 鈥 the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Renuka Nilmini 鈥 the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Prof. R.K.D.N.K.Rajapakshe-Head of the Department of Languages, Cultural Studies and Performing Arts, Ms. Thilini Bhagya Ranasinghe 鈥 Lecturer (Probationary), Department of Languages, Cultural Studies and Performing Arts, and Dr. Ruwini Dharmawardene-Director, International Affairs Division, USJ also joined representing the 91传媒.

Following the introduction, the delegates from both the institutions discussed on how the universities can collaborate and incorporate for educational purposes. There, joint research opportunities, scholarships, staff and student exchange programmes and other potential opportunities such as research conferences were discussed. Prof. Renuka Nilmini, Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda and Senior, Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera added their inputs to the discussion incorporating the subject disciplines of respective faculties. With the aim of working together to promote collaborative work between the two universities, both parties entered into an agreement. After the meeting between BFU and USJ, the delegates from BFU had a tour around the university premises as well.

Prof. A. H. L. R. Nilmini was appointed as the Dean of the for a three-year term starting on 11th September 2023, by the Vice-Chancellor of the 91传媒, Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage.

Prof. A. H. L. R. Nilmini holds a BSc Chemistry Special Degree from the University of Colombo and earned her Ph.D. specializing in polymers used in drug and gene delivery from Cardiff University in the U.K. Her journey in academia began in 1999 when she commenced her career as a Research Officer at the Polymer Chemistry Department of the Rubber Research Institute of 91传媒. She demonstrated remarkable progress, eventually becoming the head of the Polymer Chemistry Department in 2012.

In 2016, Prof. Nilmini joined the Biosystems Technology Department of the Faculty of Technology at the 91传媒, initially as a Senior Lecturer. That same year, she was appointed as the head of the department. Her commitment to excellence in education and research was further recognized in 2018 when she assumed the role of head of the Engineering Technology Department.

Prof. A. H. L. R. Nilmini’s appointment as the Dean for the second term marks an exciting chapter in the Faculty of Technology’s leadership. Researchers at the Faculty of Technology, USJ successfully produced Bio Ethanol using waste Banana collected from the vegetable market. 鈥淭otal amount of 8% of ethanol was generated by waste banana after the fermentation process. After completing the multiple distillations to remove the moisture, we were able聽 to produce 98% pure bioethanol.鈥 said聽,聽Department of Civil and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Technology, USJ

The research was carried out by聽 Department of Civil and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Technology, USJ, Prof. Nilmini Liyanage;聽Department of Materials and Mechanical Technology, Faculty of Technology, USJ, Mr. Sadeep Jayasankha (M.Phil. Student); Department of Civil and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Technology, USJ.

Blended bioethanol was produced by mixing Bioethanol with Petrol to produce E5 which is 5% Bioethanol, E10 which is 10% ethanol and E20 which is 20% ethanol. Engine performance and the flue gas emissions are tested and analyzed for the blended bioethanol. Total Sulphur emissions are less compared to the emissions with gasoline. The use of waste fruits as the feedstock reduces the production cost of the process and raises the demand for bioethanol. This study shows that the banana waste can serve as raw materials for ethanol production.

It has been estimated around 270000 tons of harvested fruits (about 30% of banana, 46% of papaya, 18% of pineapple, 40% of lime, 41% of avocado and 90% of jackfruits) are wasted in 91传媒 annually due to improper management of packaging, handling transportation and storage. Therefore, there is a big chance to study producing bioethanol using fruit wastes as a possible fuel substitute.

They performed this research with a university research grant (Grant Number:聽础厂笔/01/搁贰/罢贰颁/2021/65)听to identify the possibility of using fruit waste as a raw material for bioethanol production to replace gasoline.
