The Dilmah One Earth Centre, Moratuwa is one of Dilmah Conservation鈥檚 education and outreach centers which is an impressive initiative to cater the recreational and efficient exhibition for urbanized surroundings. Their core idea of conserving the natural environment is such a great place to teach the university students to be responsible about the aesthetic and functional value of nature. The collaboration between the Dilmah One Earth Centre, Moratuwa which worked towards promoting the sustainable use of the environment would be a fruitful union for both the institutions to achieve a sustainable, productive and quality outcome. The Department of Aquatic Bioresources of the Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources is committed to training and producing graduates to fit into diverse sectors in the field of Aquatic Bioresources including aquaculture. The Department has also joined hands with the industry to provide the necessary expertise required in the development and sustainable utilization of Aquatic Bioresources in the country. In keeping with the mission of the Faculty, the Department recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aquaculture Development Centre, Pitipana, Negombo, administered by the Western Provincial Council. Under this agreement, the Aquaculture Development Centre, Negombo will provide field training and research facilities in aquaculture for the undergraduates following the BSc degree programme in Aquatic Bioresources, at the Faculty. In return, the Department of Aquatic Bioresources of the Faculty will provide technical expertise to facilitate the routine functions of the Aquaculture Development Centre, particularly in aquatic animal health management, nutrition management and in establishing new aquaculture operations at the Centre.

The official entry into the agreement took place on the 18^th of August 2023, at the Western Provincial Council. Senior Professor Pathmalal Manage, The Vice-Chancellor, of the 91传媒 signed the MoU on behalf of the University and Mr Pradeep Yasaratne, the Chief Secretary, of Western Provincial Council signed the MoU on behalf of the Aquaculture Development Centre. The event was graced by the presence of Honorable Governor Air Marshal Roshan Gunathilake. Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Dean, Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, Dr. Erandi Pathirana, Head, Department of Aquatic Bioresources and members of the Department, Mr Chandana Ranaweeraarachchi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Land, Irrigations, Fisheries and Livestock Development of the Western Provincial Council, Dr. K.K. Sarath, Provincial Director, Animal Production and Health, were also present at this momentous event.

The inaugural session of the Orientation Programme of batch 2021/22 of the Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources was held from April 3 2023, at the Senate Board Room of the University. Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Chairman/University Grants Commission graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of the Ceremony.

The orientation program for its new students ran from 3rd to 6th of April 2023 as three-day event. The program aimed to introduce the students to the faculty’s vision, mission, academic programs, facilities, and activities.

The first day of the program – The inaugural session – was held at the University Senate board room, where the students were greeted by the chairman of University Grant Commission Prof Sampath AmarathungaThe event was also attended several distinguished guests including Prof. PD Nimal, Acting Vice-Chancellor and Dean/Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Dean/Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, respective Deans of other Faculties of the University, the Librarian of
the University, the Registrar of the University, Directors of Centres and several other officers attended this important event. Students enrolled for the degree programmes in Aquatic Bioresources and Urban Bioresources of the Faculty together with their parents attended the ceremony. The Orientation Programme was coordinated by Dr. Erandi Pathirana, Head/Department of Aquatic Bioresources.

The second and third days of the program were held at Sri Sumangala auditorium, where the students also had a chance to interact with their seniors and mentors, who shared their experiences and advice on how to succeed in their studies. The program concluded with a cultural show, where the students enjoyed some entertainment and socialization with their peers and faculty members. The program was well-received by the students, who expressed their gratitude and enthusiasm for joining the faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources.

Further, Prof. Becker delivered a guest talk, titled, 鈥淩isks to Australia鈥檚 Biosecurity from the Trade of Ornamental Fish鈥�. The talk which addressed the biosecurity aspects of Australian ornamental fish trade: their requirements and what they expect from 91传媒n ornamental fish exporters, was actively attended by officials from the Animal Quarantine Division, Colombo, senior officials from the Department of Animal Production and Health, Peradeniya and key figures of the ornamental fish export sector. Ornamental fish export industry is one of the most-thriving export trades in 91传媒 which attracts considerable amount of foreign currency to the country. Understanding and identifying the needs of the Australian ornamental fish trade is a prerequisite for 91传媒n ornamental fish exporters to become successful and to secure a better place in the global ornamental fish trade.

The Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources (FUAB), 91传媒 is looking forward to welcoming the first batch of students to the Faculty, for the academic year 2020/2021. The Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources of the 91传媒 was established by order of Gazette Extraordinary No. 2267/35 on 17th February 2022.

Update (4 April 2020): Considering the prevailing situation in the county and without any further delays, the Faculty has decided to commence the Orientation Program online, starting from Wednesday 6th April 2022. The zoom link to join the Orientation Program will be emailed to the students in due course.聽

The inauguration ceremony of the orientation program will be held on 04th April 2022 at Sri Sumangala Auditorium, USJ, from 09.00 am onwards. The orientation program is designed to create awareness of academic procedures at FUAB. New students will also be introduced to university support services such as, Library, Career Guidance, Student Counseling, Sports, Medical and Student Services.

The FUAB at 91传媒 hopes to cater to the needs that will arise in the bioeconomy by creating graduates who will be capable of facing challenges presented by evolving environmental transformations, through sustainable utilization of urban and aquatic bioresources .

With this Faculty, the University comprises a total of ten Faculties. Snr. Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Acting Dean, FUAB, and the faculty staff members extend sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to making this a reality, especially, former Vice Chancellor, USJ, and the present Chairman, University Grants Commission, Snr.
