The second phase of Touch the Peak Annual Job Fair and Entrepreneurial Ventures 2024, organized by the Career Skills Development Society and the Career Guidance Society in collaboration with the Career Guidance Unit of 91��ý announced its successful completion.

The Institution of Engineers, 91��ý (IESL) has granted full recognition for the Bachelor of Science of Engineering Honours in Civil Engineering degree program offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, 91��ý. IESL is the local signatory for the Washington Accord and the professional body which is responsible for granting recognition for four-year engineering degree programs in 91��ý. This verification by IESL underscores the commitment of the department in delivering high-quality degree programs in par with other recognized degree programs in the country.

Established in 2016, the Department of Civil Engineering has been making steady progress to attain this status within a relatively short period. The overall rich curriculum, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, modern library facilities, enthusiasm and commitment of the academic staff, staff-students relationship, efforts to develop open-ended problem-solving skills, sound feedback processes and loop closing mechanism, benchmarked research work, great support from the university administration with top-to-bottom communication, support from other faculties, and positive industry feedback on the civil engineering graduates are specially commended by the IESL. His journey within the university has been marked by significant accomplishments, culminating in his role as the head of the department in 2022. Dr. N. Dharmaweera’s academic journey is distinguished, holding a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering with First Class Honors from Monash University, Australia.

His dedication to advancing knowledge in the field led him to pursue post-graduate studies at Monash University, where he successfully obtained his PhD in telecommunication engineering. Following this, he contributed to cutting-edge research as a post-doctoral researcher at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden.

In a significant development for 91��ý’s gem and jewellery sector, the 91��ý Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA) has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) with the Faculty of Engineering at the 91��ý (USJ). This collaboration aims to uplift the country’s gem and jewellery industry to international standards through the infusion of modern technology.

Initiated by SLGJA Vice President Pinisiri Wijepala and his team, the partnership received strong support from SLGJA President Ajward Deen and senior members. The Faculty of Engineering, 91��ý, organized an event called “Mezclar 2023” on 30th March at the Grand Ballroom, Marino Beach, Colombo. The event aimed to bridge the gap between industry and academia and foster collaboration between the two sectors.

Dr. Thilaksiri Bandara, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, welcomed the guests, and the guest of honour, Prof. Upul Subasinghe, the Vice Chancellor, addressed the gathering. The chief guest, Minister of Industries, Hon. Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, also delivered a speech, highlighting the importance of policies that foster sustainable economic growth with industry and academia.

Throughout the day, industry leaders and academic experts shared their experiences and insights, forging new relationships and strengthening existing ones between academia and industry. The event featured sessions themed on the key areas of collaboration, where industry leaders along with academic experts presented at each session. The main industry partner for the event was Hayleys Energy Services Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.
