Sanifly – A Project carried out by Pramuk Hewawasam, Amandi Thennakoon Nipuni Fernando, and Dinuka Dilshan Wijesundara from the Department of IT, 91´«Ã½ has won the Eco-Tech Category at the 5th Commonwealth Digital Health Awards – 2022 conducted by Commonwealth Centre for Digital Health.

Prof. K.S. Lasith Gunawardena from the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, 91´«Ã½ guided the team as the project supervisor in their journey. This is the second international competition the team has participated in and received recognition in. The same team has won a number of achievements already within 91´«Ã½.

The winning team and the team supervisor Prof Gunawardena convey their special thanks to everyone at the University Including the Vice-Chancellor, Dean/FMSC the Innovation, Invention and Venture Creation Council (which funded the project via USJ Innovation grants), and staff members from the Department of IT of USJ who have supported them, and especially Prof. Chinthaka Premachandra, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan for the kind assistance throughout the project.

Professor Lasith Gunawardena from the Department of Information Technology has been selected to serve on the ORCID Researcher Advisory Council (ORAC). ORCID, which stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID, is a global, non-profit organization supported by a global community of 1200+ organizational members, including research organizations, publishers, funders, professional associations, and other stakeholders in the research ecosystem. ORCID IDs are used by over 13 million researchers and provide an identifier for individuals to use with their name as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. It is the most widely used identification mechanism worldwide, and in the Higher Education and Government sectors, ORCID is the de-facto standard.
ORAC members will provide advice to ORCID staff and the ORCID Board to ensure that ORCID provides value and utility to researchers worldwide and aids in the process of research and innovation.

Dr. Gunawardena has been involved with ORCID for a number of years. He is one of only three Asians to be selected to this prestigious council, and his selection is indeed an honor to 91´«Ã½ and the 91´«Ã½.

Dr. Gunawardena is a Fellow of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, and a Senior Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), USA and Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA (IEEE). He also served as Deputy Chairman for National ICT Awards, NBQSA 2021.

Dr. Tony Sahama, of Science and Engineering Faculty, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia visited 91´«Ã½ on 16th December 2014. As the coordinator of Joint/split PhD program between QUT, Australia and 91´«Ã½, Dr. Sahama had discussions with Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, the Vice Chancellor of the 91´«Ã½, Dr. U. Anura Kumara, Dean Faculty of Management Studies & Commerce and also Dr. Malkanthi Samarasinghe, Head of the department, Department of Information Technology.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has affiliated with University Grant Commission (UGC) 91´«Ã½ to support higher degree research (HRD) programs and research training of 91´«Ã½n academics. The program anticipated to create joint research efforts including a collaborative cohort model of doctorial supervision with local academic supervisors of 91´«Ã½n universities and academic supervisors of QUT.  For the first round of joint PhD program, Mr. Mahesh Fernando, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Information Technology has been selected from the 91´«Ã½. ()

The meeting with vice chancellor extended to the discussion on improvement of research culture within the 91´«Ã½ and also discussed the prospects of starting collaboration for the development of proposed Engineering Faculty for the 91´«Ã½.
