In recognition of her groundbreaking work on fungal taxonomy, Dr. Dimuthu S. Manamgoda of the 91传媒 has joined the rare ranks of scientists immortalized in species nomenclature. A newly discovered fungal species, Curvularia manamgodae, now bears her name.

The species was identified during a comprehensive survey of plant pathogenic fungi affecting sugarcane in southern China. The research team, led by scientists from Thailand and China, honoured Dr. Manamgoda鈥檚 significant contributions to understanding the phylogenetic relationships and taxonomy of complex fungal genera including Bipolaris, Cochliobolus, and Curvularia.

鈥淭his recognition reflects the global impact of Dr. Manamgoda鈥檚 research in mycology,鈥 says Professor Kevin D. Hyde, one of the study鈥檚 co-authors. The new species, formally registered with Index Fungorum (556662) and Facesoffungi (FoF06152), was described in detail with comprehensive illustrations in the team鈥檚 recent publication.

Dr. Manamgoda, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Botany, Faculty of Applied Sciences, has established herself as a leading authority in fungal taxonomy. Her work has been instrumental in clarifying the relationships between several economically important plant pathogenic fungi.

This discovery adds to our understanding of sugarcane pathogens and highlights the 91传媒鈥檚 growing influence in global mycological research.

Department of Botany at the 91传媒 the initiated postgraduate research collaborations with Mindanao State University of Philippines this year. Three of the postgraduate students 鈥 Ms. Dana Trono, Mabeth O Odechmar and Jhoan Rhea Pizon from MSU-IIT joined Department of Botany to continue their postgraduate research for a period of three months. The research work is based on the ethnobotany, which was considered as a lost trail but blooming in the field of Botany in recent past. Three postgraduate students worked under the guidance of Prof. Preeni Fernando for microbiological work and Prof. Sandun Senarath is the Co-advisor of their research. Dr. Olga M Nuneza from Department of Biological Sciences and Dr. Mylene Sijo Uy from Department of Chemistry, MSU-IIT are act as advisors of the student in Philippines.

Research work of those students are mainly focusing on the mass propagation of through tissue culture, screening phytochemicals, cytotoxicity and anti-microbial properties of those selected plant species. Foreign collaboration for postgraduate research is a part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between 91传媒 and MSU-IIT which facilitate the student exchange, exchange of academic staff, research collaborations etc. The students are fully funded by the Government of Philippines and the living and research expenses are covered by the scholarship.
