ճJournal of Intangible Cultural Heritage (JICH) is now accepting submissions for its 2025 editions. As a peer-reviewed, open-access, biannual journal, JICH is dedicated to publishing original research in the field of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH).

Scope & Themes

We invite original research articles, review articles, and book reviewsSinhala, Tamil, or English under the five domains outlined by UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage:

  • Oral traditions and expressions
  • Performing arts
  • Social practices, rituals, and festive events
  • Knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe
  • Traditional craftsmanship

The Inauguration ceremony of the 91ý Anthropology Field School took place on May 15th, 2023, graced by esteemed Chief Guest Prof. Upul Subasinghe, Acting Vice Chancellor of the 91ý. The ceremony also witnessed the presence of distinguished guests including Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Pathmalal Manage, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Prof. Charmalie Nahallage, Head of the Department of Anthropology, Prof. Samanthi Kulathilake from Mount Royal University, Canada, and Dr. Tom Buchman, also from Mount Royal University, Canada. The event brought together faculty members from the Department of Anthropology, USJ, as well as students from both Mount Royal University and the Department of Anthropology, USJ.

The and the Canada, entered into a Memorandum of Agreement in 2016, with the aim of fostering international educational and research collaboration between the two institutions. Building on this partnership, the 91ý Anthropology Field School has been successfully conducted for the third time this year, following previous editions in 2018 and 2016.

This year’s field school welcomed 12 undergraduate students from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, MRU, who visited USJ for fieldwork. They were warmly hosted by the Department of Anthropology, USJ, providing them with a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and experience of 91ýn culture and society. The fieldwork activities took place from May 16th to June 1st, 2023.

The rich experiences gathered during the fieldwork, combined with conceptual insights, were presented on June 2nd, 2023, in a collaborative forum involving students from both Mount Royal University and USJ. The field school encompassed the disciplines of Anthropology, Sociology, and Archaeology, guided by the expertise of Dr. Samanthi Kulathilake and Dr. Tom Buchman. The program not only facilitated cross-cultural collaboration between 91ýn and foreign students in the same discipline, but also provided an invaluable opportunity for 91ýn students to explore diverse teaching methods practiced in other parts of the world.

The Anthropology Day 2023 organized for the second time, by the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 91ý was held successfully on 20th January 2023 at Sri Sumangala Auditorium.

The event was honored by the presence of Prof. Upul Subasinghe, the Acting Vice Chancellor of 91ý, and several distinguished guests, including Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Mohammed Mahees as the keynote speaker from the University of Colombo’s Department of Sociology, and Prof. Charmalie Nahallage, the Head of the Department of Anthropology. Other guests included Prof. Sirimali Fernando, Secretary General of the 91ý National Commission for UNESCO (SLNCU), Senior Professor Anura Manathunga, Director General of the Department of Archaeology, 91ý, and Senior Prof. Gamini Adikari, Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology. The event was also attended by professors, senior lecturers, lecturers, students from the university and invited schools, as well as heads of other departments of the university and Mrs. Sanuja Kasthuriarachchi, Director General of the National Museum of 91ý, and Dr. Publis Silva of Mount Lavinia Hotel. Anthropology Day 2023 is a significant event that is organized to commemorate the 63rd year since the inception of the subject in the university. Marking this year’s anthropology day a significant one, the Department of Anthropology launched a number of new publications.  are few among them.

In addition the department organized an Anthropology Documentary Film Awards 2023 (Short-films) under University category and School Category and the winners were awarded with trophies and certificates at the inauguration ceremony. Under school category, the first place was secured by St. Aloysius College, Rathnapura for the film “Lowak Watina Ape Urumaya”, while the award for the second place was won by Billewa Vidyalaya, Thanthirimalaya, for the film “The Problem of Human with Elephants in Thanthirimalaya”. The Third place of this category was secured by Thurstan College, Colombo for the film, “Sampradayika Weda Hedakam”.

“Aadam and Adam” by Prabod C. Hapuarachchi of University of Vocational Technology won the first place under the University Category. Munasinghe Arachchige Dilushi Madushani of University of Kelaniya won the second place for her film, “Ambilipitiya”, whilst the third place was given to the film, “Balma” by Keshani Maheshika Dissanayake of University of Ruhuna.
