Anushka Rajapaksha, Faculty of Applied Science, was awarded the prestigious in the year 2022 by the , Italy. The award was announced during the Annual Meeting held virtually at Zhejiang University (ZJU), in Hangzhou, China on 21st November 2022. This is the very first time that a 91´«Ã½n Scientist received this TWAS─Atta-ur-Rahman Award in the field of Chemistry from The World Academy of Sciences

TWAS─Atta-ur-Rahman Award in Chemistry; now sponsored by the Searle Company Ltd, honours young scientists national of a Scientifically and Technologically Lagging country, for their contribution to the field of Chemistry. The honour carries a cash award of USD 5,000 and a certificate. The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries, known worldwide by its acronym, TWAS, supports sustainable prosperity through research, education, policy and diplomacy. The Academy is based in Trieste, Italy and is a programme unit of UNESCO. Its principal aim is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in developing countries.

Dr Rajapaksha was awarded this honour for her contribution to the development of a novel engineered biochar as an innovative solution to environmental challenges, particularly the remediation of contaminated soils and water. Dr. Rajapaksha also ranked among the top 2% of the world’s best scientists in the 2020 and 2021 lists of outstanding researchers, prepared by Elsevier BV and Stanford University, USA.

The 91´«Ã½ and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (), USA have established a collaborative research platform to conduct Small Angle Neutron Scattering () experiments under the leadership of Prof P. M. Jayaweera and Dr. Dilru Ratnaweera (). A user agreement between the two research teams was signed by the Vice Chancellor of the 91´«Ã½ and Cindy Kendrick, User Agreement Manage at ORNL. The findings of the research will provide valuable information that can be used to improve the efficiency and lifespan of dye sensitized solar devices.

Small Angle Neutron Scattering () technique can characterize molecular assembly withatomic scale resolution. Neutrons can clearly distinguish the differences between the atoms with different number of neutrons and protons, i.e. isotopes. For example, even the hydrogen and deuterium atoms can be clearly distinguished from each other. Such atomic scale resolution cannot be obtained from X-ray scattering instruments, specifically for atoms with low electron densities. Also, SANS is a non destructive technique, which means one could use this technique to study materials in-situ while functioning. However, neutron based material characterization techniques are highly costly and available only in few locations in the world (about 15 laboratories). This highly prestigious collaboration with ORNL will allow us to use their cutting edge technology to expand the understanding of materials. In one of the collaborative studies, our research team was able to explore the assembly modes of carotenoid molecules in solar cells. Such information is the key to improve the life span and efficiency of the dye sensitized solar cells.
