The at the very onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, initiated PCR testing for the SARS-CoV2 as it was of national importance to do so. Since identification of the first 91传媒n patient on the 10th of March, they have currently carried out approximately 5000 PCR tests. Dedicated team of scientists have been working all seven days, late into the night, in order to provide such a service.

As an internationally reputed laboratory, carrying out cutting edge research on dengue pathogenesis and drug discovery, they are currently carrying out the following research activities in Collaboration with the National Institute of Infectious Disease, Colombo Municipality Council and University of Oxford.

  1. Whole genomic sequencing of the SARS-CoV2 strains in 91传媒:
They have established the technique of whole genomic sequencing in 91传媒 and so far, have completely sequenced 4 strains. They will continue this research of sequencing more virus strains to find out if certain strains contribute to virulence and if critical mutations occur in the viral strains in 91传媒
  2. Antibody responses to SARS-CoV2: They have already initiated these experiments and their initial results have been shared with relevant authorities. They will also study the neutralizing antibody responses to SARS-CoV2, using a technique developed by Prof. Linfa Wang, of Duke NUS. Determining the neutralizing antibodies will also help them to identify potential donors for convalescent plasma treatment if needed in those with severe disease
  3. Identifying biomarkers and inflammatory mediators that lead to severe disease: While most patients develop mild disease, some individuals develop pneumonia leading to fatalities. They are in the process of identifying inflammatory mediators and possible biomarkers that identify such people developing severe disease and also find out factors that cause severe disease.
  4. Serosuvillence study in the community to determine the extent of silent infection: In collaboration with the CMC they are carrying out surveillance to determine the level of silent infection by antibody testing in the community.
  5. T cell responses to the SARS-CoV2: They will be initiating T cell studies to determine cellular immune responses in mild vs severe disease to understand the factors leading to severe disease and prolong viral shedding.

Apart from the above, this team is collaborating with many other organizations in COVID-19 studies.

In this research to study immune responses to COVID-19, the scientists from University of Oxford and University of Sri Jayewarenapura will be analysing blood samples from healthy individuals, as well as current and recovered COVID-19 patients in both the UK and 91传媒, to see how different kinds of existing immunity affect disease. They are particularly interested in T cells, (a kind of white blood cell that is crucial for adapting the body鈥檚 immune response to specific pathogens), as well as antibodies (a blood protein manufactured by the body to attack specific pathogens). Current research indicates that immune responses to the novel SARS-CoV2 plays a key role in the disease outcome. However, the immune responses that lead to mild vs severe disease is still poorly understood. By comparing immune markers in blood samples from the UK versus 91传媒, the researchers hope to understand how existing immunity to different viruses (including other coronaviruses) might influence the immune response to a COVID-19 infection.

The study is a continuation of a successful 12 year collaboration between Professor Graham Ogg, who currently heads the MRC Human Immunology Unit at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, and Professor Neelika Malavige at the 91传媒. The study is led by Professor Graham Ogg who is also a visiting Professor at the 91传媒. The scientists want to bring the expertise and knowledge they鈥檝e acquired to understand the immune responses in individuals with COVID-19. The collaborative research work on dengue carried out by this team has been published in high impact factor international journals and has received wide international recognition.

The 91传媒 is one of the leading laboratories in 91传媒, which is carrying out diagnostics for COVID-19.

Currently several strains of the SARS-CoV2 virus are circulating in the world and some strains are thought to be more virulent than others.

As infected patients came to 91传媒 from all over the world, the team of scientists at the Centre for Dengue Research at the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit have sequenced the viruses in 91传媒.

This is the first time whole genomic sequencing of viruses has been carried out in 91传媒. In all previous instances, when virus sequencing was required, samples have been sent overseas for this purpose. Therefore, the scientists at USJ have taken a gigantic step forward, by initiating whole genomic sequencing in 91传媒 and providing invaluable data regarding the virus strains here.

The research team was led by Prof Neelika Malavige with the participation of Dr. Chandima Jeewandara and other research scientists attached to the Faculty of Medical Sciences at 91传媒.

According to the data four 聽SARS-CoV2 virus strains are circulating among 91传媒n Covid-19 infected patients.

As another collective attempt to eradicate dengue, a sharamadana was organized to clean the university premises on 23rd November. The Vice Chancellor Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Registrar Mr. K. Gnanasiri Britto, administrative staff, academic and non-academic staff as well as the students took part in this event.

In recent past, the dengue threat had been spreading among the university community in a considerable manner. The university officials have held several discussions with health and other relative officials to bring solutions to the matter. The shramadana adds to this continuous effort. Probable mosquito breeding places were identified and duly cleaned up, making the university grounds a health-wise secure area.

Dengue is the world鈥檚 most common mosquito borne viral infection which is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the genus Aedes, principally A. aegypti. It鈥檚 so common that it makes headlines on newspapers everyday. Annually there are about 390 million infections all around the world and it causes a significant problem for 91传媒 and many Asian countries.

But for this major issue, there is neither a proper vaccine to prevent infections nor effective antiviral drug. The prevention is only sought by reducing the habitat and the number of mosquitoes and limiting exposure to bites. In order to develop a safe and effective vaccine, researchers all around the globe try to expand the knowledge about dengue at the moment.

Although the number of infections is high, only around 10% develop apparent and severe forms of dengue infection which is called dengue hemorrhagic fever or shock syndrome. And 90% of the infected individuals show only a mild illness or do not show any clinical symptoms at all. The severe forms of dengue occur with increased leaking of fluid from the capillaries.

Dr. Neelika Malavige, Senior Lecturer in Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medical Sciences; focuses on investigating the mediators that cause vascular leak in dengue. Dr. Malavige has identified a potential mediator and a clinical trial for a drug for the treatment is on progress.

Another aim of studies of Dr. Malavige is to find out why 90% of the infected individuals do not show severe dengue and what causes the virus to develop asymptomatic decease or protective immune response. Currently a large scale research project is being done, involving over 1500 individuals to find out the protective immune response to dengue. This study is mainly concentrated on T cell responses and antibody responses in dengue viral infection.

The symptoms of Dengue occur due to the increased leaking of fluid from capillaries, which if severe can lead to shock. The researchers at the Centre for Dengue Research (CDR) have identified a potential mediator that causes such vascular leakage and are currently in the process of conducting a clinical trial to determine the efficacy of a drug in the treatment of Dengue. In addition, they are currently conducting a large scale research project involving over 1500 individuals in the community, the main aim of which is to find out the protective immune responses to Dengue. This information will be vital for the development of a Dengue vaccine. The study is in its second year.

Apart from work on Dengue pathogenesis and immune responses, the researchers have also developed a mobile application for real time tracking of Dengue epidemics. A pilot study in the Dehiwala MOH Division to digitalise all addresses of Dengue patients from 2010 to 2014 October, in order to determine geo-spatial factors responsible for Dengue transmission, has just been completed. The Mobile Technology Application developed by the CDR-GIS Team is soon to be launched. The Google Asia Conference of Web Application Developers, held in 91传媒 in September 2014, has identified the work of CDR as most innovative and selected the proposal on Mobile Application Development for Dengue Control. Apart from the above activities, research work of the team has been published in 3 high impact factor international journals, and presented at 6 conferences, winning one international and two local awards for the year 2014.
