The (CFS) at the 91传媒 recently organized a two-day workshop on Urban Tree Care and Management on February 16th and 17th, 2024. The event garnered participation from both government and private sectors and received positive feedback. Led by esteemed resource persons including Prof. Upul Subasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, and Prof. Hemanthi Ranasinghe from the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, the workshop featured engaging sessions, hands-on experiences, and insightful discussions. Attendees left the workshop inspired and committed to fostering greener and safer urban spaces. In a move towards sustainability and technological advancement, the Center for Sustainability (CFS), the Timber Process and Innovation Center (TPIC), and the USJ have completed their shift to a new Green Building. The inauguration took place on August 24, 2023, in the presence of Prof. Pathmalal Manage, Vice-Chancellor of the 91传媒, along with Prof. Upul Subasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science, Prof. Hiran Amarasekera, Director of TPIC, Dr. Thilak Chandrathilake, Director CFS and Dr. Chameera Udawattha, Director of the Tech Transfer Office.

This is a shared office space housing the Center for Sustainability (CFS), University Business Linkage Cell Tech Transfer Office (UBL), and Timber Processing and Innovation Center (TPIC).

At the heart of this achievement lies the unwavering support of grants such as the AHEAD Project ICE Grant and the TPIC grant received from the State Ministry of Rattan, Brass, Pottery, Furniture and Rural Industrial Promotion.

Guided by the visionary leadership of Professor Priyan Perera, the UBL-Cell Tech Transfer Office has evolved from its inception in 2018 to this moment of triumph. The profound insights of Prof. Thusitha Abythunga, Lead Academic Expert of AHEAD, have provided crucial direction, while Prof. Hiran Amarasekera’s strategic acumen ensured the necessary resources for this endeavor.

Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage, Vice-chancellor of the 91传媒, Former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, and Prof. Upul Subasinghe’s involvement in the new building are commendable.

Prof. Harendra Kariyawasa, Dr. Kelum Gamage, and Dr. Isuru Manawadu’s instrumental efforts in securing over 60% of the project’s funding from AHEAD funds are indispensable.

Accordingly, the university will voluntarily disclose its greenhouse gas emissions starting from 2019, following the ISO 14064-1:2019 standard, and will face the third-party ISO 14064-1 audit on its GHG emission reporting on the 22nd and 23rd of November 2021.

The CFS has recently introduced the new CarbonCal web-based portal to systematically report the GHG emissions from each Department/Division of the University. A 鈥淕reen Team鈥� comprising over 120 Academic and Non-academic staff members was formed and trained to report the GHG emissions on the CarbonCal web-based portal. The center for Sustainability expects the fullest support of the campus community to achieve this remarkable feat.

The attached to Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, 91传媒 聽in collaboration with Unilever Lipton Ceylon Ltd, aims to conduct a high impact program for uplifting sustainability and productivity levels of tea small holder farmers in 91传媒.

Dr. Priyan Perera. Coordinating Director and Senior Lecturer at Department of Forestry and Environmental Science said that, this will be done through establishment of 200 model farmers across the key tea growing regions, and using these as a base to train a total of 40,000 farmers on sustainable, productive tea farming. This is in the background that an average tea small holder will harvest 350kg of green leaf per acre of land (TSHDA stats), which is far below the potential yield if proper, sustainable agriculture practices are followed. The multiplier effect we expect to achieve in sharing best practices through a set of live 鈥榤odels鈥� will help numerous farmers maximize their land holding, increase incomes/crop and help make tea farming more sustainable as a livelihood.

This initiative will deliver benefits far beyond the farm 鈥� it is expected to help increase overall tea production, enhance health in the community and protect our soil, biodiversity & water resources.
