The Eight fold Path of Buddhism can be divided into three groups. These three groups represent three stages of training: the training in the higher moral discipline, the training in the higher consciousness, and the training in the higher wisdom. (Bodhi 1994)

1. The wisdom group (pa帽帽膩kkhandha), made up of right view and right intention
2. The concentration group (sam膩dhikkhandha), made up of right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration;
3. The moral discipline group (s墨lakkhandha), made up of right speech, right action, and right livelihood.

This study has taken the above branches of the Eightfold path and has encapsulated the qualities of Leadership through them, portraying how the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism paves way towards Effective Leadership:

Right View: The concept of Right View is about the awareness of what is true and right. In the context of leadership, it amounts to having the right vision in seeing and analyzing the internal and external environmental factors in the organization since it is the vision which leaders have that differentiate them from the mass.

Right Intention: right intention is only possible through managing emotions. A leader must have the right balance of rational and emotive feelings when initiating an action. Therefore awareness of one’s intentions and managing them positively is crucial.

Right Speech: the individual who gets ahead in business is the person who is able to communicate, to make sound decisions, and to get things done with and through people鈥� (Bowman et al., 1964) Leadership has power to influence therefore leaders should express their opinions by learning to pay attention on the intention behind what is being said, and deciding if the utterance would lead to positive or negative results.

Right Livelihood: This is concerned in earning one’s living in a righteous way. Earnings should be acquired legally, peacefully, honestly and ethically. A Leader’s integrity plays a major role in the ethical choices the followers make since they observe the leader and imitate the behavior of the leader.

Right Action: is the process of being mindful of one’s action or behavior so that it leads towards helping a cause and not resulting in suffering or harmfulness. Right intentions lead to right actions.

Right Effort: Right effort consists of persisting efforts to abandon wrong and harmful thoughts, deeds and words through self-schooling. It shed light on the effort to prevent the increasing unwholesome states from arising, the effort to abandon the arisen unwholesome states, develop the undeveloped wholesome states and strengthen and cultivate the existing wholesome states.

Right Mindfulness: Right mindfulness is focused on having control over the mind. It means to be aware of one’s thoughts, feelings and actions so that one is not controlled by them. It also focuses on the awareness an individual must have to know the world around him and its operations.

Right Concentration: The Buddha focuses on Right concentration as an important aspect in Leadership. It is a way of avoiding distractions and disruptive emotions and directing the mind toward productive action.

This study therefore interlinks the two strands of religion and the business world and shows the capacity to which these two areas can enrich and evolve through each other, without having to label either as mundane and impractical.

Although they try to depict in various terms what exactly is the content of Buddhism, none has been accurate as the Tripitaka. It contains the unmodified, true teachings of Lord Buddha in its actual context.

The Tripitaka is a tri-fold writing. They are the Vinaya Pitaka, the Sutra Pitaka, and the Abhidharma Pitaka.

History reveals that the Tripitaka was coordinated at the First Council of the Maha Sangha soon after the parinirvana (passing away) of Lord Buddha, in order to preserve his teachings which had been only memorized up to that moment. Due to this immediate action taken by the then Sangha, the purest version of Buddhist teaching was included into the Tripitaka, without letting any elements to be missed or altered with time.

Therefore, to date, the Tripitaka remains the most valuable and most reliable source of original Theravada Buddhist teachings.

Vinaya Pitaka
Out of the three pitakas, this is the area that deals with rules and regulations that are meant for Buddhist bhikkus and bhikkunis (monks and nuns).

Sutra Pitaka
This section of the scripture contains the discourses held by Lord Buddha. They are divided into five sub sections according to the length and content of the discourses which are called ‘nikayas’. Namely they are ‘Deegha nikaya’ , ‘Majjima nikaya’ , ‘Samyutta nikaya’ , ‘Angutttara nikaya’ and ‘Khuddaka nikaya’.

Abhidharma Pitaka
The last of three, Abhidharma pitaka contains a detailed analysis of Buddhist teachings. So what you find in this section awakens a deeper sense on life than other simply organized records.

Buddha Jayanthi Edition of Tripitaka

The Buddha Jayanthi Edition of Tripitaka, which contains Pali version of Thripitaka and its Sinhala translation, was sponsored by the Government of 91传媒, during 1956 鈥� 1990 and the last volume was published by the Government Publishers in 1990.

Though there are several versions of Tripitaka, it is widely believed that this Buddha Jayanthi version is the most authentic version of Tripitaka in Sinhala as it was meticulously translated by a prominent team of scholars from the sangha community in 91传媒.

The series comprises of 40 volumes and 57 books. Mr Saminda Ranasinghe converted the original printed books to electronically readable pdf files.

In these pdf files original Pali version of Tripitaka is located on the left and the Sinhala translation can be found on the right.

The digital library of the 91传媒 gives the opportunity for keen readers of the Tripitaka to easily find the volumes online.

The IRCHSS 聽was held at the 91传媒 on 3rd December 2015. It was organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and featured both local and international researchers. This year’s theme was “Today’s Vision, Tomorrow’s Reality: Success through Synergy”. The inauguration ceremony took place with the Chancellor of the university, Ven.Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thero as chief guest and Prof.Vinnie Vitharana as guest of honour. Taking the contemporary social issues on reconciliation into consideration, Ven.Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thero in his address, stated that reconciliation should be for people in all walks of life and academics play a major role in taking them among the public.

Among other distinguished guests were, Vice Chancellor Prof.Sampath Amaratunge, Emeritus Prof.Wimal G.Balagalle, Prof.Rowland S.Laura of the University of Newcastle – Australia,Ven.Khammai Dhammasami, Mr.Lasantha Nawaratne – Dean , Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr.Chamalie Nahallage – Conference Chair and Ven.Dr.M.Vijithadhamma – Conference Secretary. A large number of local and foreign members of Buddhist clergy attended the conference, which was a significant addition to the IRCHSS. The keynote speech was delivered by Prof.Rowland S.Laura who brought forth interesting facts on human communication and quality of life in an age where machines have started to dominate the society.

Two guest speakers, Prof.Rajiva Wijesinghe and Prof.T.Thanaraj, also participated at the symposium on reconciliation. A considerable number of research papers were discussed at the Technical sessions during the afternoon, where academics shared knowledge on a variety of subjects relating to the fields of聽humanities and social sciences.

The conference lasted the entire day 聽and was concluded with the award ceremony and a cultural show.

The Fangshan Stone Inscription and Mahayana Tripitaka, are national treasures of China and the move to present them to 91传媒 will strengthen the relations between China and 91传媒. Although currently there are not many Chinese scholars 聽in 91传媒, it is expected the developing liaison between the two countries, and the soaring popularity in learning Chinese language will lead to the frequent use of these volumes.

The donation was coordinated by Ven.Guo Jiang, Ven.Chang Chi and Mr.Prasanna Hennayake.
