The 91´«Ă˝ successfully held the “Pradeepa Pranama – 2025” awards ceremony on March 27, 2025, at Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla. The event was attended by Hon. (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne, Speaker of the Parliament, as the Chief Guest, and Most Venerable Dr. Ittapana Dhammalankara Thero, Chancellor of the university, as the Guest of Honour. Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Pathmalal M. Manage also participated in the ceremony.

The event recognized 66 distinguished alumni for their contributions to various fields, including public service, entrepreneurship, academia, research, education, sports, and social and religious service. The recipients comprised government officials, ministry secretaries, department heads, scholars, and leaders from multiple sectors.

The Pradeepa Pranama awards celebrate the achievements of the university’s alumni who have made significant contributions to the country. This annual event continues to highlight the impact of graduates in shaping national development across diverse domains.

In a commendable acknowledgment of his dedicated service as the editor of Lankadeepa newspaper for an impressive 33 years, Mr.Siri Ranasinghe was honored at a prestigious event organized by the Alumni Association of the 91´«Ă˝ (USJ). The event, held on January 9, 2024, took place at the Senate Board Room of the University.

Mr.Siri Ranasinghe, the inaugural editor of Lankadeepa newspaper and currently serving as its consultant editor, received recognition for his enduring commitment to journalism. The ceremony featured a keynote address by Professor Agalakada Sirisumana Thero, a professor in Sinhala from the Department of Sinhala at the University of Colombo.

Highlighting Ranasinghe’s significant contributions, a short documentary film titled “Siri Ranasinghe Rupavalokana” was unveiled during the event. The film, produced by Nilanda Silva and journalist Krishantha Dayananda, was released online, allowing a wider audience to appreciate Ranasinghe’s impactful journey in the field of journalism.

The event was graced by esteemed guests, including the Chancellor of the 91´«Ă˝, Iththapane Dhammalankara Thero, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Senior Professor Sampath Amarathunga, and Vice Chancellor of USJ, Pathmalal M. Manage, among others.

Mr. Damitha Nipunajith, alumni of the Science Faculty of USJ becomes the editor of the .Ěý is a weekly science magazine published in 91´«Ă˝ by Upali Newspapers (Pvt) Ltd.

Mr. Damitha Nipunajith studied at Bogoda Maha Vidyalaya, Ananda College, Colombo and Bandarawela Central College. He was an undergraduate of Faculty of Applied Sciences of 91´«Ă˝ from 2006 to 2009 and obtained his BSc Degree. He followed Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. He has written several award winning science fiction novels including Kaalawakaashaye Sirakaruwa and Vismitha Sihina Dakinna. He joined Vidusara Magazine when he was an undergraduate.

The 2nd “Sri Jayewardenepura Pradeepa”, Annual Awards Ceremony of the 91´«Ă˝ (UoSJ), was be held on Oct.20 at Waters Edge, Battaramulla and occasion was graced by the President Maithripala Sirisena as Chief Guest. 42 scholars including Ven. Diviyagaha Yasassi Nayaka Thero, Ven.ĚýOmalpe Sobhitha Thero, Hon. Ministers S.B Dissanayake and Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Sunil Handunnetti and Bandula Gunawardhene, members of the Parliament, Reginald Cooray, Governor of the Northern Province and former minister Mahinda Wijesekara were awarded there.

Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Vice chancellor of the university, W.H.K.H. Vagapitiya, President of the Alumni association of USJP, Secretary of Alumni association, Dr Abeyratne Bandara, national coordinator Mr Ranjith Iddamalgoda and several academic members participated to this event.

The “Jayewardenepura Pradeepa” inaugural Awards Ceremony organized by the Alumni Association of the university was held in much grandeur on the 8^th August 2016 at the Waters Edge. The event graced by both President Maithripala Sirisena and the Chancellor of the University, Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thero, recognized 47 high standing officers serving the government sector of the country. Among those celebrated and appreciated were three Ven. Priests, Secretaries to Ministries, Key Government officers such as Auditor General, Commissioner of Examinations, Chairman’s and Director Generals of Government Institutions.

This event was indeed a joyful reminisce of the trials, turbulence, highs and lows that Jayewardenepura as a University have undergone, and it most certainly was an occasion to celebrate the fruits of the struggles of its founders. It was evening wherein the University motto came into life proving that “among all that rise knowledge is indeed the greatest – vijja uppatatam settha”
