Ms. Madushi D. Welikala of the Department of Computer Science, 91传媒 brought glory to the Country, University and to the Department of Computer Science by winning the Gold Medal of the Tertiary Category at the recently concluded APICTA (Asia Pacific ICT Alliance) Awards, 2019 event held in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. Her project titled 鈥淒iabMate鈥 was supervised by Mr. M. D. R. Perera, a Senior Lecturer at the Department.
鈥淒iabMate鈥 is a portable wearable device that observes and collects continuous variations in electrical characteristics of the skin using sweat through Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) readings from the user鈥檚 fingers and calculates wearer鈥檚 real-time Blood Glucose Level using Machine Learning model trained with a set of carefully chosen meta data. This non-invasive method of blood glucose monitoring eliminates the need for extraction of blood by pricking the finger and is also a cost-effective alternative. DiabMate Mobile Application facilitates wireless communication with the wearable and also provides a user-friendly and intuitive to help users stay ahead in the battle with diabetics.
APICTA is an alliance of national ICT organizations which maintains a cooperative network to promote ICT across the Asia Pacific region. 16 member economies of APICTA which include China, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Hong Kong compete at the annual APICTA Awards ceremony, which is also often referred to as the 鈥淥scars鈥 in Information Technology within the region.
This is the consecutive second year; the Department of Computer Science secured the gold medal of the Tertiary Category at APICTA.
