The World Class University Project – 91传媒 (WCUP-USJ) engendered the New Year on an inspiring note. A delegation from the University of Houston (UoH), Texas, USA arrived in 91传媒 on the 6th of January 2020, for a Joint Symposium 鈥 鈥Amalgamating Medicine with Engineering towards Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Stepping into the Future鈥. This joint symposium was a consequence of the visit of academics of USJ to UoH Texas On September 2019, laying the stepping stone 聽in establishing a Department of Biomedical Engineering at USJ, which was a key objective of the symposium. Professor Metin Akay and Prof. Chandra Mohan; the delegates from the UoH, Texas joined the Academics at USJ in the hopes to bring to reality this endeavor.

Prof. Metin Akay, the founding Chair of the new Biomedical Engineering Department and the John S. Dunn Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UoH, Texas USA; is an Electrical Engineer by profession and inventor with patents in medical imaging and image enhancement. Prof. Akay is a recipient of the third Millennium Medal and is a fellow of IEEE, the Institute of Physics (IOP), the American Institute of Medical Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Prof. Chandra Mohan; Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen endowed Professor of Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Professor has held the MGee Chair in Arthritis Research and the Walter and Helen Bader Professorship in Autoimmunity. Prof. Chandra Mohan is expertise in comprehensive profiling using multiple 鈥渙mics鈥 platforms in our laboratory has yielded novel insights on a wide spectrum of diseases, including autoimmune diseases and cancers.

The US delegates delivered the following keynote speeches which were an eye opening for 91传媒n academics, Indstrialists and students.

Dr. Akila Subasinghe former Dean, Faculty of Engineering, USJ, Prof. Surangi Yasawardene, Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, pledged to aid in the development of Biomedical Engineering amalgatingbiology, healthcare and health informatics, mechanics, and engineering, can combine diverse skills to create solutions using BME. The establishment of the emerging field of Bio-Medical Engineering is USJ is only possible due to the vision of former Vice-Chancellor, Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge and Dr. Bandula Wijay; Ambassador, Science Technology and Innovation, 91传媒, which they were commended for during Professor Ranil de Silva鈥檚 speech.

Dr. Lasith Gunewardene, the General Secretary of聽 Innovation, Invention and Venture Creation Council (IIVCC), USJ delivered an insightful presentation on the Success Stories of the IIVCC and the importance of Biomedical Engineering in Entrepreneurship in 91传媒.

Commencing after the speeches was an enlightening interactive session which included the exchange of ideas from the Industry and Academia alike, and led to potential collaborations. The Symposium was concluded by the Acting Vice-Chancellor at USJ, Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage who graced the gathering with his thoughts on the importance of industry-academic collaborations

Professor Akay and Professor Mohan had fruitful discussions with Honourable Dr. Bandula Gunewardene; Minister of Higher Education, Technology and Innovation and Honourable Susil Premajayantha; State Minister of International Cooperation and. This meeting paved the way for a fruitful discussion on a prospective joint Double Doctoral opportunities with UoH, which Director, WCUP proposed at UoH during USJ visit, Moreover, offered the delegates offered assistance to the Honourable Ministers on furthering the development of on Innovation and Invention in BME for 91传媒 and its implications in expanding the 91传媒n Economy.

Professor Akay visited the plantations with the kind courtesy of the Head of Business Development & Plantations, Aitken Spence PLC, where Professor Akay enlighted the use of 91传媒n Natural Products on brain tumors through the chip invented by him as a Collaborative project which would lead to enhancing the health benefits of our own Natural Products and marketability of nutraceuticals and drug development for brain cancers.

Barring the Exploitation of Economically Important Plants in 91传媒

91传媒 is a biodiversity hotspot for natural products with the own indigenous identity and it鈥檚 under the threat of biopiracy.

To address the importance of the indigenous identity of Ceylon natural products in the global economic development of 91传媒, a joint symposium was organized by the Interdisciplinary Center for Innovation in Biotechnology & Neuroscience (ICIBN), 91传媒 (USJ) in collaboration with National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan (NSYSU) on 05th of December 2019 10.00 AM to 12.00 PM.

The Symposium was chaired by Prof. Ranil de Silva, Director, World Class University Project and ICIBN, USJ who addressed the audience on Barcoding of Ceylon Natural Products; The Way Forward for 91传媒n Economy. The symposium was graced by two more keynote speakers; Prof. Yu-Chung Chiang, Chairman & Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, NSYSU, who addressed the audience on The Native and Cultivated Phalaenopsis Species from Biogeography to Horticulture and Prof. Chih-Chuang Liaw, Chairman & Professor, Department of Marine Biotechnology & Resources, NSYSU addressed on The Development and Recent Research of Phytomedicines in Taiwan. Also, the Symposium gathered several Academic members, Researchers from different Organizations/Institutions and Professionals from the Industry/private sector to actively participate in the symposium.

The objective of the symposium was to cause the paths leading towards industry and academia to merge and continue along as one. Professor Chiang, whose area of expertise lies in the fields of Conservation Genetics, Plant Genetics and many more was a strong suit in aiding the valuable members of the audience to further their understanding of the need for protection of 91传媒鈥檚 natural products. Additionally, the insight gained from the research of Professor Liaw, who鈥檚 鈥榯erritory鈥 covers the fields of Natural Product Chemistry and Natural Compounds amongst many others was an eye opener and trail blazer for many people amongst the audience. Before the conclusion of this successful event, an interactive session was conducted in order to allow the audience to directly connect with Professors Liaw and Chiang. The opportunities yielded from the event are multitudinous. A few of the many examples include

  • Access to front line technology for innovative product developments

The Symposium and Interactive session served as an initiative to enhance the Public Private Partnerships linking industry and academia leading to 鈥Crushing Biopiracy鈥 targeting the global market. Moreover, this approach was a hallmark for students to discuss research findings with NSYSU and to embark the opportunities on Joint/Split double M.Phil/Ph.D programs and Tuition waiver scholarships by NSYSU for postgraduate students successfully.

To address the challenges by environmental changes A Joint Symposium organized by the World Class University Project (WCUP), 91传媒 (USJ) in collaboration with National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan (NSYSU) () and the Faculty of Applied Sciences, USJ was successfully held on the 29th November 2019 at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, USJ.聽 The Vice Chancellor, Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge , Prof. Laleen Karunanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, and Prof. Ranil de Silva, Director, World Class University Project (WCUP), USJ were pleased to apprise the arrival of 17 NSYSU delegates from Taiwan for the Symposium and interactive session.

This Symposium was indeed an upshot of the strong relationship in regards to the signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), Taiwan (/academic/usjp-signed-two-mou-national-sun-yat-sen-university/) which has being paving the way for opportunities for students between both Universities.

To fulfill the brainstorming session the Symposium was themed on 鈥Towards a Better Environment: Challenges and Solutions鈥 focusing on the protection of the environment to guarantee a better public health to ensure its lasting survival for our future generations and a guiding light to the world by adding value utilizing cutting-edge technology.

The Symposium was chaired by Prof. Ranil de Silva, Director, WCUP, Dr. Mitch Ming-Chi Chou Vice President, Office of Research & Development, NSYSU, Prof. Laleen Karunanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, USJ and was graced by three keynote speakers; Prof. Chia C. Wang, Director, Aerosol Science Research Center, NSYSU聽 who addressed the audience on Air pollution, Environmental Changes and Public Health: Current Challenges in Aerosol Science Studies; Prof. Nilwala Kottegoda, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences, USJ on Wonders of Nature: Writes the Story of Slow Dance of Molecules and Prof. Pradeep M. Jayaweera, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences,USJ on Mineral Dust Aerosols: Air We Breathe and Climate Change. Also, the Symposium gathered several Heads of the Departments, Academic members, Researchers from different Organizations/Institutions and Professionals from the Industry/private sector to actively participate in the symposium.

During the event the delegates from College of Engineering, NSYSU engaged on an interactive session with Faculty of Engineering, USJ which was coordinated by Dr. T. Bandara, Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering to discuss future academic collaborations in the field of engineering with NSYSU. Furthermore, a discussion took place for the establishment of Proposed Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, USJ with College of Marine Sciences delegates from NSYSU which was coordinated by Prof. Gamini Senanayake, Lead Consultant, Faculty of Urban Agriculture and Bio Resources, USJ and Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences,USJ.

The Symposium and Interactive session provided a platform for the sharing of multidisciplinary research collaborations leading to innovative product development with NSYSU, Taiwan and USJP. It also served as an initiative to enhance the public private partnerships linking聽industry聽and academia leading to product development targeting the global market. A meeting was held with the Vice Chancellor, Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Prof. Ranil de Silva, Director World Class University Project, USJ, and the Delegates from James Cook University (JCU), Australia headed by Prof. Marcus Lane, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ronald White, Dean, Science and Engineering, Mr. Vignesh Vijayaraghavan, Head of International Recruitment and Mr. David Samuel, Regional Head 鈥 91传媒 and Maldives.

JCU is known as the World鈥檚 No. 1 University for Marine Biology and is one of the leading Tropical Universities in Australia with its cutting-edge ecological and environmental research studies, promoting an intellectually stimulating multidisciplinary environment for its students. ()

Successful collaborative concepts were discussed for Student exchange, Joint/Split Double M.Phil/ Ph.D, Credit transfer programmes on the fields of Marine Biology, Aquaculture Science and Technology, Fisheries Science, Biodiversity Conservation, Data Science, Urban Development, and Engineering, Tourism in multidisciplinary areas with graduate employment opportunities. External degree programmes on Business Management and Commerce fields were also conversed during this fruitful session. Furthermore, a stepping stone towards an academic establishment on Tourism and Hospitality Management was introduced. These key accomplishments will further allow the exchange of research material, databases and joint academic activities such as workshops, seminars and collaborative research work that would ultimately uplift the world ranking of USJP in the future. Prof. Ranil de Silva to explore prospective academic collaborations between JCU and USJ in order to Sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the near future. The delegates also visited the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Applied Sciences and The Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, USJ to further explore possible collaborative initiations with USJ.

The 91传媒 has paved the way as the leader at securing the future of its student’s as renowned researchers by offering split/joint M.Phil and double Doctorates in multidisciplinary research areas in collaboration with top world ranking Universities. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sampath Amaratunge and Prof Ranil De Silva, Director, World Class University Project visited National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan (NSYSU) and Kaohsiung International Food Show, 24th to 27th October 2019.

MoUs between USJP and NSYSU have successfully provided unique openings towards split/joint M.Phil/Double Doctorates, exchange of students, faculty members and researchers with the objective of sharing resources and knowledge for research projects, joint publications and product development leading to innovations.

Key Accomplishments from USJP visit to NSYSU

  • As a fruitful effort of this meeting, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge gave an illustrative presentation on establishing a new Faculty on Urban and Aquatic Bioresources at USJP in collaboration with NSYSU – Prof. Ying-Yao Cheng, President of NSYSU, Vice President Dr. Chih-wen Kuo, Office of International Affairs (OIA), Vice President Dr. Mitch Chou, Office of Research & Development (ORD), Dr. Hsien Hua Lee, Dean, College of Marine Sciences and Prof. Chia C. Wang, Director of Aerosol Science Research Center of NSYSU who have expertise in Aerosol Science & Biophysical Chemistry as well as all the academics of Marine Biology Department graciously agreed to extend their contribution on the proposed faculty establishment.
  • Dr. Jentaie Shiea, Director Toxicology and Biomedicine (RSRCTB) launched the first example worldwide to successfully use ambient mass spectrometers in clinical emergency medical care. He has agreed to join hands with us to provide training in short/long term workshops on Mass Spectrometry
  • As an outcome of the split/ double M.Phil program, a successful discussion was held on genetic characterization of Cinnamon, ICIBN-USJP will establish the only center for barcoding service in 91传媒 as pioneers in implementing a Barcoding facility for Natural Products in with the aim of 鈥Crushing Biopiracy鈥 in collaboration with NSYSU.

This visit has undoubtedly strengthened the bond between the two universities and has promoted fellowship and mutual understanding leading to more chances of collaborations between NSYSU and USJP in the future.

Professor Ranil De Silva, Director of World Class University Project 鈥 USJP, Director, Interdisciplinary Center for Innovation in Biotechnology & Neuroscience received an invitation for four guest lectures; where two聽 lectures were delivered at the IBRO-APRC Neuroscience School on Molecular Basis of Neuroinflammation Mediated Neurodegeneration at Baranas Hindu University, Varanasi, one speech at Manipal Academy of Higher Education, (MAHE), Manipal and the fourth guest talk聽 at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore (NIMHANS). Two of his PhD students, Mr.Nalaka Wijekoon and Mr.Lakmal Gonawala were also selected to the IBRO-APRC Neuroscience Varanasi School to present their current research findings in oral presentations.

The purpose of this visit was to strengthen ties between 91传媒 and India and to emphasize the importance of innovative research collaboration on multidisciplinary areas of neuroscience for the betterment of molecular therapeutics and diagnostics of neuropathological disorders. Prof. de Silva has a long-lasting collaboration with NIMHANS where one of his PhD聽students, Dr. Printha Wijesinghe worked on age-related human brain neuropathologies under the supervision of Prof. S.K. Shanker, Emeritus Professor, Neuropathology & Principal Co-Ordinator Human Brain Tissue Repository (HBTR) Neurobiology Research Centre NIMHANS; the most comprehensive and largest neuropathological study completed between India and 91传媒. The study resulted in two high impact publications in Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease [ IF 3.731]聽and Journal of Current Alzheimer Research [ IF 2.28 ] in 2016 and Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy [IF 2.357] 2019 (Accepted with Revisions)

During this fruitful visit, Professor De Silva initiated discussions on signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Professor B.N. Gangadhar, the Director of NIMHANS,聽 and Dr. H. Vinod Bhat, the Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. This agreement between the universities would ensure opportunities to establish an exchange programme for students, academics and researchers between USJP and the Indian institutes with the goal of collaborating on research projects, private and public partnerships which would mutually benefit both universities. Furthermore, it would allow the exchange of research material, databases and joint academic activities such as workshops, seminars and collaborative research work that would ultimately uplift the world ranking of USJP.

A meeting organized by the World Class University Project under the guidance of Prof. Ranil de Silva, regarding the initiation of Entrepreneurship development and business incubator program for the 91传媒 was held at the University Board Room, with the delegates of the Ministry of Primary Industries and COSTI, Ministry of Science and Technology. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, the Vice-Chancellor of USJP.

The main aim of the discussion was to develop a practical model to create聽Business incubators聽linked to聽universities with a聽support system聽where selected entrepreneurial students and graduates will be given聽an opportunity for incubation.

In this regard, the Ministry of Social welfare and Primary Industries will extend financial and technical assistance聽for the establishment of聽 startup聽 companies in Incubator systems.

The pronouncements taken at the meeting are as follows:

  1. Establishment of Business Incubators at the USJP
  2. Formulating a Cabinet paper regarding the establishment of Business Incubators at the University

The meeting was attended by, Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, Prof. Ranil de Silva, Dr. Nilmini Liyanage and Mr. R.N Weerasinghe from USJP,聽 Mr. Presanna Ekanayake and Ms. Surani Dias, Prof. K.D.N Weerasinghe from Ministry of Primary Industries and Prof. R.U Halwatura from the Inventor Commission.
