In line with Australian-Government funded scoping study for mariculture Development in 91传媒, Prof. Joy Becker, Associate Professor in Aquatic Animal Health and Production, the University of Sydney, Australia, and Dr. Wayne O鈥機onnor, Senior Principal Research Scientist, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Australia visited the University on the 2nd of October 2023. Prof. Becker and Dr. Wayne O鈥機onnor met with the Vice-Chancellor, Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage which led to a productive discussion and added a lot of insights to the future road maps of mariculture development of 91传媒. The Dean of the , Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, the Head of the Department of Aquatic Bioresources, Dr. Erandi Pathirana, and members of the Department of Aquatic Bioresources were also present at this event.

Marking the successful completion of a scoping study on mariculture development of 91传媒 which further endorsed the greater potential of mariculture in 91传媒, the project will next focus on the commercial farming of Asian sea bass, Indian oyster, and seaweeds in 91传媒.

The Department of Aquatic Bioresources of the Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources is committed to training and producing graduates to fit into diverse sectors in the field of Aquatic Bioresources including aquaculture. The Department has also joined hands with the industry to provide the necessary expertise required in the development and sustainable utilization of Aquatic Bioresources in the country. In keeping with the mission of the Faculty, the Department recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aquaculture Development Centre, Pitipana, Negombo, administered by the Western Provincial Council. Under this agreement, the Aquaculture Development Centre, Negombo will provide field training and research facilities in aquaculture for the undergraduates following the BSc degree programme in Aquatic Bioresources, at the Faculty. In return, the Department of Aquatic Bioresources of the Faculty will provide technical expertise to facilitate the routine functions of the Aquaculture Development Centre, particularly in aquatic animal health management, nutrition management and in establishing new aquaculture operations at the Centre.

The official entry into the agreement took place on the 18th of August 2023, at the Western Provincial Council. Senior Professor Pathmalal Manage, The Vice-Chancellor, of the 91传媒 signed the MoU on behalf of the University and Mr Pradeep Yasaratne, the Chief Secretary, of Western Provincial Council signed the MoU on behalf of the Aquaculture Development Centre. The event was graced by the presence of Honorable Governor Air Marshal Roshan Gunathilake. Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Dean, Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, Dr. Erandi Pathirana, Head, Department of Aquatic Bioresources and members of the Department, Mr Chandana Ranaweeraarachchi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Land, Irrigations, Fisheries and Livestock Development of the Western Provincial Council, Dr. K.K. Sarath, Provincial Director, Animal Production and Health, were also present at this momentous event.

The first stakeholder meeting of the proposed Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources was held on the 15th of October 2019 at the Fingara Town and Country Club. Many stakeholders from diverse areas and fields attended the meeting to provide valuable feedback and comment with regard to the establishment of the Faculty.

The meeting was graced by Sr. Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Vice-Chancellor, 91传媒, Prof. Gamini Senanayake, Lead Consultant for the proposed Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Coordinator, proposed Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, Dr. Udari Ranasingh, Research Assistant cum Secretary proposed Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources.

It was emphasized at the meeting that the proposed faculty will be established with the aim of addressing national requirements and molding a set of students who are capable of creating new jobs as opposed to those who simply seek them.

The Faculty will be the first in the nation that will be looking at the urban and aquatic spheres of agriculture. With the growth of the urban population and population in general traditional agriculture is facing many issues especially in terms of space.

It is the view of the Vice-Chancellor, that problems are a different form of opportunities and that the solutions brought forth will be the stepping stones of development. Thereby it is evident that new technologies will be the reality of agriculture in the future and while the concept of Knowledge economy has presently obtained a respectable footing, it will soon shift to a Bio-Economy.

The 91传媒 hopes to cater to the needs that will arise in the bio-economy by creating graduates that will be capable of facing challenges presented by the evolving environment and economy.
