Business Economics Student wins Best Paper Award at South Asian Economics Students’ Meet 2020

Mr. Pasan Wijayawardhana, a fourth-year undergraduate of the Department of Business Economics, won the Best Paper Award for the research paper titled “Can compensating wage differentials economically empower women in South Asia?” presented under the theme of “Mainstreaming Gender for Development” at the 16th South Asian Economics Students’ Meet (SAESM) 2020.

SAESM 2020 was held from the 21st to 26th of January 2020 in Kathmandu, Nepal. This was organized by the Central Department of Economics, Tribhuvan University in collaboration with the Nepal Economic Association and the World Bank. SAESM can be cited as the largest students’ Economics conference in the South Asian region.

NSYSU – USJ Joint Symposium Towards a Better Environment: Challenges and Solutions

To address the challenges by environmental changes A Joint Symposium organized by the World Class University Project (WCUP), 91��ý (USJ) in collaboration with National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan (NSYSU) () and the Faculty of Applied Sciences, USJ was successfully held on the 29^th November 2019 at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, USJ. The Vice Chancellor, Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunge , Prof. Laleen Karunanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, and Prof. Ranil de Silva, Director, World Class University Project (WCUP), USJ were pleased to apprise the arrival of 17 NSYSU delegates from Taiwan for the Symposium and interactive session.

This Symposium was indeed an upshot of the strong relationship in regards to the signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), Taiwan (/academic/usjp-signed-two-mou-national-sun-yat-sen-university/) which has being paving the way for opportunities for students between both Universities.

To fulfill the brainstorming session the Symposium was themed on “Towards a Better Environment: Challenges and Solutions” focusing on the protection of the environment to guarantee a better public health to ensure its lasting survival for our future generations and a guiding light to the world by adding value utilizing cutting-edge technology.

The Symposium was chaired by Prof. Ranil de Silva, Director, WCUP, Dr. Mitch Ming-Chi Chou Vice President, Office of Research & Development, NSYSU, Prof. Laleen Karunanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, USJ and was graced by three keynote speakers; Prof. Chia C. Wang, Director, Aerosol Science Research Center, NSYSU who addressed the audience on Air pollution, Environmental Changes and Public Health: Current Challenges in Aerosol Science Studies; Prof. Nilwala Kottegoda, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences, USJ on Wonders of Nature: Writes the Story of Slow Dance of Molecules and Prof. Pradeep M. Jayaweera, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences,USJ on Mineral Dust Aerosols: Air We Breathe and Climate Change. Also, the Symposium gathered several Heads of the Departments, Academic members, Researchers from different Organizations/Institutions and Professionals from the Industry/private sector to actively participate in the symposium.

During the event the delegates from College of Engineering, NSYSU engaged on an interactive session with Faculty of Engineering, USJ which was coordinated by Dr. T. Bandara, Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering to discuss future academic collaborations in the field of engineering with NSYSU. Furthermore, a discussion took place for the establishment of Proposed Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, USJ with College of Marine Sciences delegates from NSYSU which was coordinated by Prof. Gamini Senanayake, Lead Consultant, Faculty of Urban Agriculture and Bio Resources, USJ and Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences,USJ.

The Symposium and Interactive session provided a platform for the sharing of multidisciplinary research collaborations leading to innovative product development with NSYSU, Taiwan and USJP. It also served as an initiative to enhance the public private partnerships linking industry and academia leading to product development targeting the global market. Moreover, this approach was a hallmark for students to discuss research findings with NSYSU and to embark the opportunities on Joint/Split double M.Phil/Ph.D programs and Tuition waiver scholarships by NSYSU for postgraduate students successfully.

Dr. Asha Fernando Wins ‘Women Super Achiever’ & ‘Innovative Leader’ Awards at Asia’s Education Excellence Award Ceremony

Dr. R. Asha Nimali Fernando, Senior Lecturer (Grade 01) attached to the , the has been awarded the ‘Women Super Achievers Award’ and the ‘Innovative Leader Award’ in 16^th August 2019- (Singapore) at the Asia’s Education Excellence Awards which was presented by the World Education Congress, CMO Asia with CMO council as its Strategic Partner and Stars of the Industry Group as a research partner. The awards of the highest stature are presented to individuals and institutions who have surpassed several levels of its excellence and set an example of being a role model and exemplary leadership, individuals behind the institution who are building their institutions through leadership, innovation, academic and industry interface and supreme objective of building future leaders.

Education is playing an important role in shaping the destiny of the future in the world, which means the students. The 10^th Asia’s Education Excellence Awards has recognized the institutions and individuals who believe Excellence is infinite and can lead to shaping the destinies of the future of the world.

Dr. Asha was awarded as the ‘Women Super Achievers’ due to the service that she has been doing for the society as a scholar who is doing research under the fields of Philosophy and Psychology. She has many experiences from around the globe, as she has gained the chance of presenting what she has done academically to the international audience many times. And still, she is working on several projects in the 91��ý instead of her service as a senior lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and Psychology.

The Innovative Leader Award was awarded to Dr. Asha for her project titled “Ceylon Smart Village (Introducing a digital and ethical framework for development” which was first introduced at the Invention and Innovation Exhibition organized by the 91��ý in respect to the 60^th anniversary of the university. The objective of the ‘Ceylon Smart Village’ is to bring the technology to the village with the system to evaluate the problems of the village level, and to achieve the development as a collective effort within the state.

A Meeting on the Initiation of Entrepreneurship Development and Business Incubator Program for USJP

A meeting organized by the World Class University Project under the guidance of Prof. Ranil de Silva, regarding the initiation of Entrepreneurship development and business incubator program for the 91��ý was held at the University Board Room, with the delegates of the Ministry of Primary Industries and COSTI, Ministry of Science and Technology. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, the Vice-Chancellor of USJP.

The main aim of the discussion was to develop a practical model to create Business incubators linked to universities with a support system where selected entrepreneurial students and graduates will be given an opportunity for incubation.

In this regard, the Ministry of Social welfare and Primary Industries will extend financial and technical assistance for the establishment of startup companies in Incubator systems.

Prof. Pathmalal Manage; Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Co-chairperson of the University Research Council, Prof. Pradeepa Jayawardene; Co-chairperson; University Research Council and academic members representing various research fields participated in the ceremony.
