The at the 91´«Ã½ held its orientation program for the new student intake on April 1, 2025, at the faculty premises. The event was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, the Registrar, Mr. A.B. Weliwita, the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Prof. Renuka Nilmini, along with Deans of other faculties, Heads of Departments, and academic staff.

The program aimed to introduce students to the university and the faculty’s structure, expectations, and academic environment. The Vice Chancellor and the Dean addressed the gathering, highlighting key aspects of the faculty and the importance of adapting to current developments in technology and higher education.

Students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Technology and Department of Mechanical and Materials Technology showcased their innovative projects at 91´«Ã½â€™s first International Industry Expo – 2024. Held from June 19 to 23 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo, the event gathered industry leaders and innovators from around the world.

Highlighting the success of our participants, 3rd year student D.G.N.K. Madhusanka, specializing in Energy and Environmental Technology, secured the 1st place in the category of IT innovations with his groundbreaking project, “Gammasell.com.”

We are proud to present the remarkable achievements of our students at the expo. Their projects not only impressed the attendees but also showcased the diverse range of talents and innovative solutions developed within our faculty. Assessment procedure

Formative Assessment

  • Continuous assessments from each course module – 10 % of the final grade
  • Industrial visit and report submission – 10 % of the final grade
  • Laboratory sessions, mini-project and reports submission – 20 % of the final grade

Summative Assessment

A written examination will be held at the end of the second semester and this will be contributed 60% of the final grade.

Exam Criteria

The Diploma in Cosmetic Technology is awarded to candidates who obtain a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Duration: one (01) year

Course fee: Rs: 200,000.00

Course fee of Rs: 200,000.00 can be paid in two installments. The first installment (60% of the course fee) at the registration and balance payment within 03 months after the commencement of the diploma.

The Faculty of Technology at the 91´«Ã½ successfully hosted the Inaugural Ceremony of the International Conference on Circular Economy and Bioenergy on December 7, 2023. The event, titled “Transitioning to a Sustainable Future: Summit on Research-Based Education in Circular Economy and Bioenergy,” took place at the Grand Ballroom of the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo.

Dr. P.A Koliyabandara delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the conference. The opening remarks shed light on NORPART, the Norwegian Partnership Programme for Global Academic Cooperation, emphasizing the significance of international collaboration in academic pursuits.

The third International Conference on Innovation and Emerging Technologies () took place on November 23rd-24th, 2023, hosted by the at the 91´«Ã½. The conference, held under the theme “Sustainable Technologies for Economic Resilience,” provided a dynamic platform for experts and innovators to share insights into smart technologies across diverse fields.

Adding to the academic prestige, Senior Professor Sampath Amarathunga, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), and Senior Professor Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice-Chancellor of the University, graced the conference with their presence. The deans of faculties at USJ also actively participated.

Distinguished keynote speakers graced the event, including Senior Professor P.B.R. Dissanayake, a leading figure in civil engineering and the President of the Institution of Engineers in 91´«Ã½. Dr. Ajantha S. Atukorale, Director of the University of Colombo School of Computing and President of the Computer Society of 91´«Ã½, also shared valuable perspectives. Dr. KKA Sanjeewa, from the Faculty of Technology at the 91´«Ã½, has been honored with the prestigious Young Scientist Award by the Institute of Biology 91´«Ã½. This esteemed award is bestowed upon young biologists who demonstrate exceptional research skills and have made significant contributions to the advancement of the field of biology in 91´«Ã½.

Dr. Sanjeewa’s research primarily focuses on the bioprospecting of marine organisms to discover novel bioactive secondary metabolites for developing nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and functional foods. His particular interest lies in investigating the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of natural bioactive compounds for treating fine dust-induced inflammatory responses in humans. He has published over 80 research/review articles in SCI-indexed journals, over 30 abstracts in many international conferences, and several book chapters with reputed international publishers. Dr. Sanjeewa currently has an H-index of 29 over 2450 Google Scholar citations. Dr. Sanjeewa holds the position of Editorial Board Member in the Marine Biotechnology section of the Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Journal. He also actively contributes as a Reviewer Board Member and Guest Editor for several marine biomedical sciences-related journals, including Marine Drugs. In addition, he is a recipient of the Top 2% highly cited researcher recognition (awarded by Elsevier BV and Stanford University) in 2021 and 2022, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to the field of marine life sciences.

Dr. Sanjeewa received the honor during the Inauguration Ceremony of the 43rd Annual Sessions of the IOBSL, which took place on Friday, September 22, 2023, at the Ariyana Reach Hotel in Maharagama.

Prof. A. H. L. R. Nilmini was appointed as the Dean of the for a three-year term starting on 11th September 2023, by the Vice-Chancellor of the 91´«Ã½, Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage.

Prof. A. H. L. R. Nilmini holds a BSc Chemistry Special Degree from the University of Colombo and earned her Ph.D. specializing in polymers used in drug and gene delivery from Cardiff University in the U.K. Her journey in academia began in 1999 when she commenced her career as a Research Officer at the Polymer Chemistry Department of the Rubber Research Institute of 91´«Ã½. She demonstrated remarkable progress, eventually becoming the head of the Polymer Chemistry Department in 2012.

In 2016, Prof. Nilmini joined the Biosystems Technology Department of the Faculty of Technology at the 91´«Ã½, initially as a Senior Lecturer. That same year, she was appointed as the head of the department. Her commitment to excellence in education and research was further recognized in 2018 when she assumed the role of head of the Engineering Technology Department.

Prof. A. H. L. R. Nilmini’s appointment as the Dean for the second term marks an exciting chapter in the Faculty of Technology’s leadership. 2. A qualification of SLQF level 6 or above in the area of polymer chemistry, polymer science, material
science, chemistry or chemical engineering or as determined by the senate of the university

3. Completion of NVQ level 7 with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 0-4, as determined by the senate
of the university

or

4. Completion of NVQ level 6 with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 0-4 and 2 years of continuous
working experience (or equivalent to a cumulative of 2 years) in the rubber or plastics sector as
determined by the senate of the university may be considered for admission.

The Inauguration Ceremony of the very first batch of Diploma in Cosmetic Technology (Intake 2023/2024), offered by the Department of Biosystems Technology, was successfully held on 27th of May, 2023 at the Ven. Sri Soratha Auditorium, Faculty of Technology, 91´«Ã½.

Prof. Nimal Punyasiri, the chair professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Biochemistry Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Colombo delivered the Keynote speech. Prof. Nilmini Liyanage, the Dean, Faculty of Technology, Dr. Dhanushka Udayanga, Head- Department of Biosystems Technology, Dr. Kaushalya Abeysekera, Coordinator of the Diploma also addressed the gathering. Eng. Raviprasad de Mel, Head of the Department of Materials and Mechanical Technology, visiting lecturers, other academics at the Department of Biosystems Technology, and diploma candidates participated in the event.

Being the only diploma in Cosmetic Technology offered by a government university in 91´«Ã½, this SLQF level 03 course is designed to provide theoretical and practical knowledge on all aspects related to cosmetic science and the manufacturing of cosmetic products which provide added advantage for small and medium-scale cosmetic and beauty entrepreneurs, cosmeticians, cosmetologists, beauticians, Ayurvedic medical practitioners, university students, or anyone interested in pursuing a career related to the Cosmetic industry.
