The 43rd Annual General Meeting of the Academics’ Santhagaraya & Welfare Society at the 91´«Ă˝ was successfully held on November 8, 2024. The event took place at 7:00 PM at the Ariyana Hotel in Maharagama, gathering over 75 academic staff members dedicated to supporting the university’s academic community.

The meeting included the election of a new committee, charged with continuing the society’s mission of enhancing academic welfare and fostering a supportive environment for all members. The newly appointed committee members are:

Secretary: Dr. Wasanthi De Silva

Treasurer: Dr. Kingsley Karunaratne

Vice President: Dr. Chathuranga Vidanage

Assistant Secretary: Dr. Chithrani Wijesundara

During the meeting, members discussed and proposed initiatives to be implemented by the new committee to further strengthen the welfare of the academic community. The evening concluded with a dinner, where attendees had the opportunity to connect and exchange ideas.

The Academics’ Santhagaraya & Welfare Society continues to be a pillar of support within the 91´«Ă˝, playing a vital role in enhancing the well-being and cohesion of academic staff.

Mr. M. A. N. Chandrathilaka is an attorney-at-law and a distinguished senior lecturer (Grade 1) at the Legal Studies Unit in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce at the 91´«Ă˝.
Mr. Chandrathilaka is a graduate of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, where he earned his LLB degree. His passion for legal studies led him to pursue advanced degrees, culminating in a P.G.Dip and an LLM from the University of Wolverhampton, England followed by an MPhil from the University of Colombo. This extensive educational journey equipped him with a deep understanding of legal principles and a nuanced perspective on various aspects of law.
One of Mr. Chandrathilaka’s noteworthy accomplishments includes his successful completion of the Attorney at Law program from the Supreme Court of 91´«Ă˝. This rigorous program is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the legal profession. His practical knowledge and hands-on experience acquired through this program further strengthen his capabilities in legal matters. He was also the founding head of the Legal Studies Unit at FMSC-USJ.
On 19th of September 2023, Mr Chandrathilaka received his official appointment letter from the Vice-Chancellor of the 91´«Ă˝, Senior Professor M. M. Pathmalal. As the new Proctor, Mr Chandrathilaka is poised to lead with a vision that emphasizes integrity, fairness and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of academic and administrative excellence. His extensive knowledge of legal studies, coupled with his dedication to the university’s values, makes him a valuable asset to the institution.

Dr. Asanka Sanjeewa has been recognized as the Most Outstanding Young Researcher in the field of Life Sciences for the prestigious CVCD Excellence Awards in 2022. Dr. Sanjeewa, a distinguished scientist, earned his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.sp. Agri) with honors in Agriculture from Rajarata University in 2012. He further pursued his academic journey, completing his MSc and Ph.D. in Marine Bioresource Technology at Jeju National University in South Korea in 2016 and 2019, respectively.

In 2019, Dr. Sanjeewa commenced his post-doctoral research in the esteemed Marine Bioresource Technology Laboratory at the Department of Marine Life Sciences, School of Marine Biomedical Science, Jeju National University, South Korea. After his enriching post-doctoral experience, Dr. Sanjeewa joined the Department of Biosystems Technology at the Faculty of Technology, 91´«Ă˝ in 2021 as a Senior Lecturer. His research expertise lies in harnessing the potential of marine bioresources to develop functional products such as nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and functional foods.

Driven by his passion for scientific exploration, Dr. Sanjeewa has contributed significantly to the academic community, publishing over 80 research articles in renowned SCI-indexed journals. Notably, his exceptional achievements have earned him recognition as one of the Top 2% highly cited researchers in 2022 by Elsevier BV and Stanford University.

The at the 91´«Ă˝ is committed to fostering innovative concepts and originality among university academics. In line with this mission, the UBL Cell has introduced a Patent Consultation and a Drawing Service which aim to provide valuable resources and assistance, ensuring that innovations are brought to the limelight with due recognition while effectively protecting its Intellectual Property (IP) rights.

The UBL Cell has teamed up with Nithya Partners, a well-known intellectual property law firm, to provide an instrumental Patent Consultation Service to skilled innovators and front runners. The team is well-equipped with notable professionals in various fields to assist academics with their ground-breaking research findings and refreshing innovations towards a successful patenting process that will transform into thriving ventures. The patent consultation service is provided with the kind assistance of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) through the MoU with USJ, initiated by the Innovation, Invention, and Venture Creation Council (IIVCC, USJ).

In addition to the Patent Consultation Service, the UBL Cell has also announced that it will offer a Drawing Service. This service is intended to enhance the visual representation of novel products and inventions, emphasizing their unique features and functionalities. The Drawing Service of the UBL aims to guide academics in using various 2D, 3D, and visualization software to make their innovations more understandable and captivating, thereby obtaining increased exposure from the industry.

Dr. Chameera Udawattha has been appointed as the Director of the of 91´«Ă˝. The Business Linkage Cell of the 91´«Ă˝ is dedicated to linking the innovations and inventions of the University to the needs of the industry.

Currently serving as a senior lecturer in the Department of Estate Management and Valuation within the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Dr. Chameera Udawattha is also a chartered Architect and an Associate member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). His expertise lies in Building Construction, Construction Technology, Building pathology, and Cost Estimation. He has published interdisciplinary projects in various outlets and received prestigious awards, including the 2018 President’s Award for Scientific Publication, the 2021 President’s Award for Outstanding Research, the SLIA Research & Publication Award for 2019-2020, the SLIA Research Award 2020, and the Best Paper Award by Global Academic Research Institute (GARI) in 2017. In 2023, he was honored with the “Young Innovator of the Year” award for his incredible contributions to the field of construction and real estate.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences, 91´«Ă˝ started conducting training sessions on the skills development of its academic members. The Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Prof Upul Subasinghe organized the first event in person on the 13th of October 2022 “Understanding Students before Examinations” at the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Over 40 young academic members of the faculty actively participated in this half a day event.

The Professional , Ms. Rasika Manohari and Mr. Ishan Edirisuriya conducted speeches on the Mental and Physical Health of Students, followed by the training given by , Faculty of Applied Science, USJ on Examination Paper Setting and Moderation.

Beyond the targeted goals of this event, the participants were even provided insight into the various issues faced by students in crisis situations, which could be helpful in setting future academic activities of the faculty.

Ceremonial Induction of assumption of duties of Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera as the Dean of the Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources was held on last 28th of July 2022 with the participation of Senior Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, Vice-chancellor of the 91´«Ă˝.

Ceremony held at Sagra Building of Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources of USJ. Snr Prof. Jayaweera assumed duties following a Pirith Chanting by the Honorable Maha Sangha. Heads of departments, academic, non-academic and administrative staff members participated in the induction ceremony.

Dr. Thilakasiri Bandara has been elected as the new Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the Board Meeting of the respective faculty held on 06th July 2022 with the chairmanship of Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage, Vice Chancellor of the 91´«Ă˝. Dr. Bandara will assume duties from 15th July 2022.

Prior to elected as the new Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Bandara was conducting duties as the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, of the Faculty of Engineering, USJ.

Dr. Bandara obtained his B.Sc.Eng. (Hons) degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with a first class from University of Ruhuna. He served to the same department as a lecturer before he moved to Australia for higher studies. He received his Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree from University of Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Bandara obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from RMIT University, Australia. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, 91´«Ă˝ in 2017 after working for few years in Australia. He is an associate member of the Institution of Engineers 91´«Ă˝. His research interests include Microfluidics and Heat transfer, Electronic cooling and Renewable Energy. Dr Bandara has published over 10 publications in his field.

The vaccination programme will be conducted from 08th to 11th March 2022 at the Bandaranayake Hall of the University Premises from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. each day.

This programme is intended to vaccinate the booster dose and second dose for the students and staff under 30 years of age in State Universities and HEIs against COVID-19.

Administration is kindly requesting those who intend to receive the above vaccine (Booster Dose) at the premises of the 91´«Ă˝ you are kindly informed to fill the Google Form link given below and submit, in order to avoid unnecessary delays and to minimize other administrative work at the vaccination centre.

Those who wish to receive the Booster Dose are requested to produce their N.I.C., the University Identity Card and the Covid-19 Vaccination card to the concerned Health Authorities at the University vaccination centres in order to receive their Booster Dose.

The second dose will also be administered to anyone who has already obtained the 1st dose. Therefore, those who have already obtained the first dose may register themselves in the above link.
