The 112th Commemoration Ceremony of the founding farther of the 91传媒, Most Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayake Thero聽 held on 03rd of May 2023 at the university premises. The commemoration ceremony was attended by Prof Upul Subhasinghe; Acting Vice-Chancellor, 91传媒, the Registrar, Bursar, Deans of Faculties, Academic, Nonacademic and Administrative staff of the University.

Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero was a prominent Buddhist monk and scholar who contributed to the revival of Buddhism and education in 91传媒 in the 19th century. He founded the Vidyodaya Pirivena in Maligakanda in 1873, which later became the 91传媒 in 1959. He was also a key figure in the Panadura debate of 1873, where he defended Buddhism against Christian missionaries.

The commemoration ceremony began with a religious service at the university, followed by a floral tribute at the statue of Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero. A commemorative oration was delivered by Prof. Praneeth Abyesundara, of the Department of Anthropology, at the Sumangala Hall followed by the event held at Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero statue. He highlighted the achievements and legacy of Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero as a pioneer of Buddhist education and culture.

A 鈥楤hakthi gee鈥� program organized by the 91传媒 in celebration of 鈥榁esak鈥� was held on the 23^rd of May 2019 from 4 pm onwards. The program was conducted to strengthen the unity of the diverse community within the 91传媒.

The 91传媒 can be considered as the largest university in 91传媒 in terms of the student population. Therefore, it also hosts a large number of students and staff from different communities. The Programme was conducted at a crucial time when 91传媒 has faced a great tragedy targeting a particular sect of people. The aftermath of such tragic occurrences is often chaotic thereby this program aided in bridging the rift between communities and strengthening it further.

The program was graced upon by The Chief Prelate (Mahanayake) of Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha of Siyam Maha Nikaya, Ven. Dr. Ittapana Dhammalankara Maha Nayake Maha Thero, the Chancellor of the 聽91传媒, His Eminence Malcolm 聽Cardinal Ranjith, respected Mawlawis of the Islamic religion and a Hindu priest. Thereby the program paid respect to all religions in the country.

The program highlighted the universal message observed and spread by all religions which are peace and love. The bringing together of all communities gave the program added significance. The 鈥楤ahkthi gee鈥� program was followed by a 鈥楧ansala鈥� which catered to everyone.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival 鈥楬aritha Wasanthaya 2019鈥� annually organized by the听辞蹿听聽was held on 04th聽April 2019 at the Department premises.

Prof. Sampath Amaratunge; Vice Chancellor of the University; Prof. Laleen Karunanayake; Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Prof. Sudantha Liyanage; Dean of the Faculty of Technology participated in the festival to share the New Year happiness with the students.

Also, academic members of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences and other departments of the Faculty of Applied Sciences participated in the festival.

The 91传媒 celebrated Thai Pongal on the 30^th of January 2019 with the presence of Rev. Dambara Amila Thero, Department of History Sr. Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Vice Chancellor, 91传媒, Dr. Anura Kumara, Dean Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Prof. Samanchandra Ranasinghe, Dr. Praneeth Abeysundera and other academic and non-academic staff members.

The Colourful event has always been part of the academic calendar as an official University celebration that marks solidarity among the diverse groups within the university system. The Thai Pongal celebration is historically celebrated as a mark of gratitude to the sun that has provided energy to sustain us.

The main addresses of the dignitaries present at the occasion were based on harmony and diversity among students.

鈥淭oday the world is full of conflict; there is conflict within families, with other families, villages, and even in the country. If these conflicts develop it will no doubt be the downfall of the world. There is no quick fix for these conflicts; the only solution for conflict is developing compassion within people鈥�

Rev. Dambara Amila Thero, in his address mentioned about this celebration of gratitude and the spreading of the message, brought to all by the Thai Pongal celebration. He also stated that celebrations as such within the university are quintessential to preserve harmony among students. He stated that the Tamil Community in 91传媒 has played a great part in the history of 91传媒.

The Vice-Chancellor, too while appreciating the ceremony impressed upon the necessity of maintaining cultural harmony within the university and creating an inclusive environment within the University. He stated that the education in the Tamil Language is absolutely necessary in order to create a strong bond between the two communities and that it should be encouraged.

The Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, emphasized the diversity within the university and the importance of preserving it through compassion and understanding. He stated that it is the duty of every person to value and respect all living and non-living things in the world and that it would lead to creating a sustainable environment.

The opening ceremony of the renovated Buddhist Shrine of the University of the Sri Jayewardenepura was held on the 19^th聽June 2018 at 4.30 pm. The event was graced by the Mahasanga, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, the Vice Chancellor of the 91传媒, Deans of the Faculties and many academic and non-academic staff members.

The Buddhist shrine was opened amidst the ceremonious chanting of pirith and the offering of flowers. Rev. Pinnawala Sangasumana thero, Senior Lecturer, Department of Geography,聽聽stated that this is the first step in the much larger project of building a Mindfulness garden that will benefit the students, academics and the non-academic staff of the university.

Prof. Amaratunge stated that the creation the Buddhist shrine has been long overdue. He stated that its plans could be dated back to the times of Rev. Welivitiye Sri Soratha Thero. Prof. Amaratunge addressing the audience stated that the University was able to finally complete this initial stage due to the ample guidance of the dedicated members of the Sanga within the University.

鈥淭he journey of renovating this Buddhist shrine was not without obstacles, but the Sanga in this university guided and aided us greatly in the process. From the very design to the materials, they were able to give us much needed advice. Therefore, as I see it they have been able to fulfill the vision of Rev. Welivitiye Sri Soratha Thero,鈥� he said.

Thai Pongal is celebrated on the first day of the month Thai of the Tamil calendar. The day normally falls between 12th and 15th of the month of January in the Christian calendar. Thus, Thai is the first month of the Tamil Almanac, and Pongal is a dish of sweet concoction of rice, moong dal, jaggery and milk. This festival is celebrated by one and all as it is non-relevance to any particular religious faith. The whole Tamil population of the world celebrates it without any differences. Therefore it is widely known as “Tamil Thai Pongal” or the “Festival of the Tamils”.

The Tamil festival of Thai Pongal is a thanks giving ceremony in which the farmers celebrate the event to thank the spirits of nature spirit, the Sun and the farm animals for their assistance in providing a successful harvest. The rest of the people celebrate the festival to pay their thanks to the farmers for the production of food. Overall, it is a festival to encourage social cohesiveness and unite people by bringing them together in a common function. There are many songs about Thai Pongal and there is much Tamil literature about it.

Celebration of the Pongal day at the 91传媒 was taken place on 19^th聽January 2018 in front of the Cultural Centre of the University. Amila Dambara Thero as well as academics non academics and undergraduates of the University participated in the Pongal ceremony.
