A team of researchers at USJ invented a new technology to produce RSS with high thermal conductivity by incorporating 91传媒n vein graphite directly into the latex rubber that could revolutionize the rubber manufacturing industry in 91传媒.

The 91传媒 has signed an Exclusive Intellectual Property and Technology License Agreement with Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC to commercialize a new technology that was developed by a team of scientists in the Center of Nanocomposite Research in the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

The team comprises of multidisciplinary scientists, Prof. Laleen Karunanayake and Dr. Thusitha Etampawala from the Department of Polymer Science, Prof. A R Kumarasinghe from the Department of Physics and Prof. Narayana Sirimuthu from the Department of Chemistry. They received 45 million LKR research grant under Research Innovation and Commercialization grant scheme from the Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD) Operation of the Ministry of Higher Education in 91传媒 in late 2018.

The team has invented a way to add value to natural rubber by incorporating locally available graphite. In 2019, MoU was signed between the university and the Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC for a joint project to achieve the above objective.

The research involves a novel process for producing Ribbed Smoke Sheets (RSS) with high loading of graphite. No one has done this before because graphite particles wash away when RSS sheets are prepared with graphite if added to latex. The thermal conductivity of the material is significantly improved and hence it has the potential to reduce the curing time of rubber articles, considerably. It was shown that approximately 30% of curing time can be saved when it was used in solid tire fomulations.

The 91传媒 patented the innovation in 91传媒. On 20th of March, 2023 an Exclusive Intellectual Property and Technology License Agreement was signed between the university and the Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC. Under the terms of the agreement, Bogala Graphite Lanka will have exclusive rights to use the technology in 91传媒 for a period of ten years.听 According to the best of the University Business Linkage鈥檚 knowledge the university does not have this sort of agreement in history. If the project is commercializable then the university will earns US dollars for the first time in the history.

The agreement was signed by Professor Upul Subasinghe and Mr. Amila Jayasinghe, Chief Executive Officer of Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC, in a ceremony held at the Boardroom of the Administration building of the 91传媒 in presence of Chairperson and other delegates of Bogala group and some academics of the university of Sri Jayewardenepura.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Bogala Graphite Lanka on this exciting technology,” said Professor Upul Subasinghe, Acting Vice Chancellor of the 91传媒. “This licensing agreement is a testament to the quality of research being conducted at our institution and demonstrates our commitment to supporting the commercialization of innovative technologies which is a much needed requirement at present situation of the country.”

“We are very pleased to be collaborating with the 91传媒 on this important project,” said Mr. Jayasinghe. “This technology has the potential to add value to the graphite industry in 91传媒 and we look forward to working closely with the university to bring it to market.”

The signing of the licensing agreement marks a significant milestone for both the 91传媒 and Bogala Graphite Lanka, and is expected to pave the way for future collaborations between the two institutions.

With many privileges to mention, the 91传媒n team competed this year against numerous Universities worldwide emerged Runners up in the Software Innovation category at the global finals of the Robot Design Competition of ICSR 2021 held in Singapore as a hybrid conference with both physical and virtual participation from 10-13 November.

Mr. Mahesh Samarasinghe, Mr. Kushan Hansika, and Ms. Sajini Senaratna were the team members who worked tirelessly to conquer the title. The victorious team extends their gratitude to Dr. Ravindra De Silva who is the supervisor for this project, the Director at the Robotics and Intelligence Systems Laboratory (RIS), USJ, and a Senior lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, 91传媒 and Mr. Udaka Manawadu who is a former research assistant at RIS and currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Aizu, Japan.

We would like to wish the team to have all strength to cross all boundaries to productize the innovation and serve the world for a better future with social robotics.

Magic is something that always mesmerizes and takes us into a whole new world. When it comes to fantasy movies, especially children fall in love with the fictional characters they come across in their favourite movies. Recently we witnessed the beauty of bringing magic into life by a group of students from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Department of Computer Science, 91传媒. The team led by Adhisha Gammanpila, Asela Wijesinghe, Tehani Wanniarachchi, Viraji Amarajeewa and Dovini Jayasinghe along with the supervision of Dr. Ravindra de Silva was able to give life to the Sorting Hat from the famous Harry Potter as a social robot. In November 2019, the team was able to bring fame to the country by winning the Global 1st Place Award at the International Conference on Social Robotics 2019 (ICSR 2019) which was held in Madrid, Spain.

However, the journey did not stop from there as most likely by many other University projects. The team strived to do more.

Once again, the team was able to bring another victory for the country by winning the Global 2nd Place Award at the Student Design Competition of the Human Robot Interaction 2020 (HRI 2020) Conference which was scheduled to be held on March 23rd in Cambridge, UK. The conference HRI 2020 is also one of the iconic events of the academic calendar of social robotics similar to ICSR 2019 which the team was able to win in the previous year. Even though the event was held virtually due to the prevailing conditions across the globe the competition was held in a highly competitive manner. Out of the other winners, the 1st place was won by a team from Germany and the 3rd place was won by a team from Japan.

As 91传媒ns it is truly a proud moment for us as a nation to compete with such nations who are far ahead in Robotics technology and bring victory to the country.

The winning presentation done by the team lead Adhisha Gammanpila can be viewed via the following link : and further information of the conference is available via : .

Briefly sharing about the functionality of the social robot developed by the team (The Sorting Hat) is mainly designed as a mediator for autistic children. To add much clarity, it is not a cure nor a solution for autistic children but a supporter. Briefing about autism, it is a complex, neurological disease that typically appears during early childhood and doesn鈥檛 allow children to interact, express themselves and emotions challenging a person鈥檚 social skills. Therefore to support in overcoming these social challenges the team developed a social robot with the appearance of the Sorting Hat from the Harry Potter movie series.

Initially the project was started in the year 2019 January under the course Human Robot Interactions by Dr. Ravindra de Silva who is also the supervisor of this project. A key aspect about him is that he has over 18 years of experience in Robotics while in Japan and also the iconic figure who introduced Social Robotics to 91传媒. This is also a great example as we believe on the impact of the 91传媒n experts transferring their knowledge back to 91传媒.

The team also takes this moment as an opportunity to thank everyone behind who made it possible to achieve this level of success. Especially to all the lecturers of the Department of Computer Science, the Dean of Faculty of Applied Sciences Prof. Laleen Karunanayake, the Innovation Invention and Venture Creations Council, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Sudantha Liyanage and also the former Vice Chancellor of the University and the current Chairman of UGC Prof. Sampath Amaratunge for the immense support extended. The team also extends their humble gratitude to Udaka Manawadu, Nipuna Vimukthi, Mahesh Samarasinghe, Afaz Deen, Kushan Hansika, Charitha Weerasooriya, Sajini Senaratna and all other members of the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the Department of Computer Science, 91传媒.
