A workshop on “AI in Education: for teaching and learning” was held on 6th March 2025 at the Bandaranayake hall of the 91´«Ã½, bringing together the educators, tech enthusiasts and students to explore the transformative role of artificial intelligence in the teaching and learning process. Organized by Ven (Prof.) Witharandeniye Chandasiri, the coordinator of the Sankathana sub-committee of the Publication Committee of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the 91´«Ã½ under the directives of the Dean, Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, the event featured Prof. Hiran Amarasekera who delivered a thought-provoking speech on AI-driven tools, personalized learning and future of AI in education. The talk was translated into English by Dr. Madhubhashini Dissanayake Rathnayake of the Department of English Language Teaching for better understanding of the participants who represented different ethnicities.

The Student Support Center, initiated to assist the undergraduate candidates of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in resolving their issues and fostering well-rounded graduates, was officially opened on January 16, 2025, under the patronage of the Dean, Professor Shirantha Heenkenda. The opening ceremony took place on the fifth floor of the Sri Wimaladhamma Building.

This center provides support to the undergraduate community of the faculty through three main service streams:

  • The Academic Mentoring Program (AMP): Under academic mentoring, the center is ready to assist with any difficulties you may face regarding general or honors degree programs, course unit selection, credit values of course modules, or any other information included in the faculty handbook.
  • The Student Counselling Program (SCP): If you experience any personal or academic stress during your undergraduate life, the Student Counselling Program is available to assist you. Through this program, you can access professional psychological counselling services offered by trained counsellors, including faculty members, while adhering to ethical standards.
  • The Student Welfare Program (SWP): This program aims to support students facing financial challenges during their academic journey. Whether it’s financial difficulties or matters related to accommodation and overall welfare, the center is prepared to provide assistance tailored to your needs.

No matter the challenges you face, you are not alone. The Student Support Center is dedicated to guiding you throughout your university journey.

The inauguration ceremony of the orientation program for the new intake (1144 new undergraduates) of the (2024) was held on the 01st of January 2025 at 2.00 p.m. at the Bandaranayake Hall with the participation of the Vice Chancellor of the 91´«Ã½; Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage, Registrar of the 91´«Ã½; Mr.A.B. Weliwita, Librarian,  Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda,  Deans of other faculties, Heads of Departments as well as the academic members of the faculty. The ceremony was welcomed by Professor Sepala Samarasekara, the Chairman of the Orientation Committee who introduced the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to the new students. Followed by, the Vice Chancellor of the 91´«Ã½; Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage and Registrar of the 91´«Ã½, Mr.A.B. Weliwita addressed the students on the university culture respectively.

The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Shirantha Heenkenda, delivered an address to the students, focusing on their academic journey and emphasizing the importance of strategic planning for achieving both academic and professional success.

The program gives students an opportunity to learn about the university and the faculty. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences looks forward to welcoming its new intake and is excited about the journey ahead.

°Õ³ó±ðÌý of the 91´«Ã½ recently concluded the orientation program for the 2024 batch of students enrolled in the external degree programs offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The event took place on December 22, 2024, at the Bandaranaike Hall on the university premises.

The orientation program marked the beginning of the academic journey for the new students. The event included several informative sessions designed to provide participants with an understanding of the university’s external degree programs, expectations, and resources available to support their studies.

Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor of the 91´«Ã½, delivered the inaugural address, underscoring the university’s dedication to delivering quality education and supporting students in achieving their academic and professional aspirations. Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, addressed the students, outlining the faculty’s role in maintaining a strong academic foundation for the external degree programs.

Prof. Rupika Senadheera, Director of the External Degrees and Extension Course Unit, provided an overview of the unit’s activities and resources, encouraging students to utilize the available opportunities effectively. Members of the academic staff also participated, offering insights into the curriculum and guidance for managing the challenges of external studies.

The program served as a platform for students to familiarize themselves with the university’s academic culture and connect with faculty members and peers. The sessions were interactive, allowing students to raise questions and seek clarifications about their respective programs.

The 91´«Ã½ currently offers six external degree programs, including B. Com, B.A General, B.Sc Business Administration, and Public Administration, under the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences and Management Studies and Commerce. Since the commencement of the first external degree program in 1979, the university has continued to expand its offerings to meet the growing demand for flexible and accessible higher education.

The successful conclusion of the orientation program sets a positive tone for the academic year ahead. The university’s dedication to supporting its external degree students underscores its mission to deliver inclusive and impactful education.

The 91´«Ã½ (USJ) hosted its prestigious Research Awards ceremony for the years 2021-2023 on Friday, November 22nd, 2024, at the Golden Rose Hotel, Boralesgamuwa. The event recognized outstanding contributions to research and academic excellence across multiple disciplines.

In his opening address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Pathmalal Manage highlighted how the university’s commitment to research excellence has significantly contributed to USJ’s rising prominence in international rankings, including Times Higher Education (THE), QS World University Rankings, and Webometrics. Prof. Manage emphasized the direct correlation between research output and the university’s global standing.

Guest of Honor, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, who initiated this awards program in 2014, expressed satisfaction at how the event has evolved to become a cornerstone of USJ’s academic calendar. He noted the impressive growth in both the quantity and quality of research outputs over the past decade.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Awards, presented in two streams: Science, and Social Sciences & Humanities. These awards recognize researchers who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to their respective fields over the past five years.

The Early Career Researcher Awards celebrated promising academics under 40 who have shown outstanding research potential, maintained consistent publication records in top-tier journals, and achieved a minimum Scopus h-index of 10.

The awards recognized excellence across several categories, including:

The 91´«Ã½ (USJ) has signed a partnership agreement with Ural State University of Economics, Russia, to establish a Russian Language Center at USJ. The initiative has been supported by His Excellency Levan S. Dzhagaryan, the Russian Ambassador to 91´«Ã½.

The opening ceremony was attended by Snr. Prof. M. M. Pathmalal, Vice-Chancellor of USJ, Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, deans from other faculties, heads of departments, and students. Representatives from Ural State University of Economics, including Prof. Roman Krasnov and Maria L. Popova, also played key roles in finalizing the partnership.

The establishment of this center will provide USJ students with the opportunity to engage more deeply with the Russian language and culture. This collaboration is expected to broaden academic and cultural exchange between the two universities, fostering international cooperation and new academic pathways for students.

Further developments regarding the Russian Language Center will be announced in the coming months.

The new dance studio at New Wimaladhamma Mansion of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was officially handed over to the students on September 12, 2024. It stands as one of the largest dance studios among 91´«Ã½n universities, fully equipped with two practice halls, dressing rooms, storage rooms, and all other necessary amenities. The opening ceremony was graced by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, attended by several distinguished guests.
The Department of Languages, Cultural Studies, and Performing Arts, under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, offers both Dance Honors and General degree programs, along with a Drama General degree. The new dance studio will benefit not only students in the Dance and Drama programs but also the entire university community.

On September 3, 2024, the 15th Vidyodaya Literary Awards ceremony was held at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, 91´«Ã½. This annual event, organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, is notable for being the only literary awards ceremony organized by a university in 91´«Ã½. The ceremony is a key platform for recognizing contemporary literature in the country.

The awards cover six categories: novels, short stories, poetry collections, articles, song poetry, and classical works. The evaluation process involves three rounds, conducted by experts in each field, ensuring a thorough and impartial assessment of the submissions.

The evaluation for the 2024 awards began in August, leading to the selection of the best works for the final round. This year’s event also highlighted the collaboration between academia and the publishing industry, with Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed with several prominent publishers to strengthen these ties.

S. Godage and Brothers (Pvt) Ltd. served as the silver partner, Sarasavi Publishers as the gold partner, and Buddhist Cultural Center as the bronze partner for the 2024 awards. These partnerships aim to promote high-quality literary publications in 91´«Ã½.

The event recognized outstanding literary works published in 2023. The ‘Best Novel of the Year’ award was presented to “Thiwanka,†authored by Eric Ilyapparachchi. Other notable awards included:

  • Best Classical Work: “Muni Tooth Work†by Dharmarathna Herath
  • Best Song Poetry: “Cold Water Festival†by Kularathna Ariyawansha
  • Best Article: “The Final Answer†by Aruna Pradeep Kumar

  • Best Short Story Collection: “Missed Island†by Prabhath Jayasinghe
