The vaccination programme will be conducted from 08th to 11th March 2022 at the Bandaranayake Hall of the University Premises from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. each day.

This programme is intended to vaccinate the booster dose and second dose for the students and staff under 30 years of age in State Universities and HEIs against COVID-19.

Administration is kindly requesting those who intend to receive the above vaccine (Booster Dose) at the premises of the 91传媒 you are kindly informed to fill the Google Form link given below and submit, in order to avoid unnecessary delays and to minimize other administrative work at the vaccination centre.

Those who wish to receive the Booster Dose are requested to produce their N.I.C., the University Identity Card and the Covid-19 Vaccination card to the concerned Health Authorities at the University vaccination centres in order to receive their Booster Dose.

The second dose will also be administered to anyone who has already obtained the 1st dose. Therefore, those who have already obtained the first dose may register themselves in the above link.

According to the latest SARS-CoV-2 variant report issued by the Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the 91传媒, 82 new cases of Omicron and 6 new cases of Delta were detected from 88 samples.

“These 88 samples were sequenced from the 4th week of January from the community.” said Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director of the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Faculty of Medicine.

The 88 Omicron cases include a mix of the two main Omicron lineages BA.1 and BA.2.

Omicron sublineages were detected in the following locations. 30 cases of BA.1 were detected in Colombo Municipal Council, Colombo, NIMH, Kesbewa and Mathugama. 22 cases of BA.1.1 were detected in CMC, Colombo, Kesbewa and Mathugama. 28 cases of BA.2 were detected in CMC and Colombo. 2 cases of B.1.1.529 were detected in Colombo.

Different Delta sublineages were detected in the following locations. 4 cases of AY.104 (91传媒 delta sub-lineage) were detected in听Horona, Mathugama, Pandura and NIMH. 1 case of AY.95 (91传媒 delta sub-lineage) was detected in Horana. 1 case of B.1.617.2 was detected in NIMH.

Currently 25% of the sequences of 91传媒 are BA.2, which was named as a variant of interest by the UK Health security agency.

Early analysis has suggested BA.2 has a higher growth rate than BA.1 and therefore, more transmissible than BA.1. However, early data shows that immune evasion is less with BA.2 than with BA.1.

Other variants identified within 91传媒: B.1.411: 91传媒n variant, B.1.1.25, B.1.258, B.1.428, B.4, B.4.7, B.1.1.365, B.1.525, B.1, B.1.1.

The 78 Omicron cases include a mix of the two main Omicron lineages BA.1 and BA.2.

Omicron sublineages were detected in the following locations. 56 cases of BA.1 were detected in Colombo, Avissawella, Borelesgamuwa, Homagama, Katugoda, Kosgama, Madapatha, Padukka, Parakudawa and Wellampitiya. 12 cases of BA.2 were detected in Avissawella, Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Konnawala, Mt Lavinia, Nugegoda, and from one passenger from India. 7 cases of B.1.1.529 were detected in Angoda, Colombo, Ruwanwella, Mt Lavinia, Nugegoda and Padukka.

Different Delta sublineages were detected in the following locations.1 case of AY.98 (91传媒 delta sub-lineage) was detected in Thalangama. 1 case of AY.104 (91传媒 delta sub-lineage) was detected in Kaduwela. 1 case of B.1.617.2 was detected in Wellampitiya.

Currently, 8% of the sequences of 91传媒 are BA.2, which was named as a variant of interest by the UK Health security agency.

According to the latest SARS-CoV-2 variant report issued by the Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the 91传媒, 160 new cases of Omicron and 22 new cases of Delta were detected from 182 samples.

鈥淭hese 182 samples were sequenced from the last week of December and the first week of January from the community and arrival and departure samples from the airport.鈥 said Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director of the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Faculty of Medicine.

The 160 Omicron cases include a mix of the two main Omicron lineages BA.1 and BA.2. BA.1 is detected in at least 113 countries and whereas BA.2 is directed in at least 3o countries.听BA.1 /B.1.1.529.1. is the standard variety. BA.2 /B.1.1.529.2 is stealth omicron that differs from the standard variety. BA.3 /B.1.1.529.3 is the third sublinaege. BA.1 and BA. 3 has the characteristic S gene target failure whereas BA. 2 sub-lineage does not have it.

In 91传媒, Omicron sublineages were detected in the following locations. 139 cases of BA.1 were detected in Angoda, Colombo, Dehiwala, Galle, Kaduwela, Kandy, Matara, Minuwangoda, Negombo and Trincomalee. 17 cases of BA.2 and 4 cases of B.1.1.529 were detected in Colombo. 98 samples from Bandaranaike International Airport that were positive and were found to be infected with Omicron are from departure passengers and not arrival passengers while some of them were 91传媒ns and some were foreign nationals.

Different Delta sublineages were detected in the following locations. 4 cases of AY.28 (91传媒 delta sub-lineage) were detected in Nugegoda. 10 cases of AY.104 (91传媒 delta sub-lineage) were detected in Colombo.听Further, AY.25 and AY.114 were detected in Colombo. AY.5.3 was detected in Angoda whilst B.1.617.2 was detected in Angoda, Colombo, and Ratnapura.

Other variants identified within 91传媒 are B.1.411: 91传媒n variant, B.1.1.25, B.1.258, B.1.428, B.4, B.4.7, B.1.1.365, B.1.525, B.1 and B.1.1.

According to the latest SARS-CoV-2 variant report issued by the Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the 91传媒, 41 new cases of Omicron were detected from 176 samples. Omicron is currently detected in over 100 countries including the United States, Canada, Australia India, and South Africa, etc.

Different delta sublineages were detected in the following locations. AY.28 was detected in Divulapitiya, Giriulla,Colombo, Gampaha, Matara and Mirigama. AY.104 (91传媒 delta sub-lineage) was detected in Batticaloa, Colombo, Puwakpitiya, Duwulapitiyta, Galle, Gampaha, Ja Ela, Ahungalla, Kuthulgala, Matara, Madampe, Baddegama, and Thammitta. AY.106 was detected in Negombo. AY.120 was detected in Nilpathagama. AY.122 was detected in Kandy and Udugampola. AY.127 was detected in Galle. AY.1.617.2听 was detected in Awissawella, Minuwagoda, Diwulapitiya, Dompe, Kandy, Kuruwita, Colombo and Negombo while AY.43 was detected in Galle and Chilaw.

It should be noted that except Omicron,听B.1.411, 91传媒n variant,听B.1.1.25,听B.1.258,听B.1.428,听B.4, B.4.7,听B.1.1.365,听B.1.525,听B.1, B.1.1听variants are identified within 91传媒 in the last year.

As the more dangerous Covid-19 Delta variant began to spread like wildfire in Colombo and the rest of the country, with a 48 percent increase in the number of deaths, the Government clamped an inter-provincial travel ban once again on 13th of August 2021, responding to health experts鈥 repeated warnings to lock down the country.

Leading scientists at the 91传媒 said that disturbingly almost 90 percent of the new cases found in Colombo belonged to the Delta variant, the strain which originated in neighboring India and caused a tragic death wave there. The variant has now spread to over 100 countries including 91传媒. Yet, this highly transmissible and more contagious variant is still not widespread outside the Western Province.

Dr. Chandima Jeewandara of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Biology at Sri Jayewardenepura University said the dominant strain found elsewhere was still the less dangerous and less transmissible Alpha variant. He explained that the country was still witnessing the onset of Delta. Its full force will be felt after five weeks when the infections curve will reach its peak. 鈥淲ith the rate of transmissibility of the Delta variant, the virus can spread exponentially if nothing is done to stop it,鈥 he stressed. It has been estimated that it is 100 percent more transmissible than the original Coronavirus detected from Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

So far Delta cases have been found in Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Dambulla, Kandy, Ampara, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara districts in addition to the three districts of the Western Province (Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara).

Dr. Jeewandara said five seconds without a mask was enough for someone to get infected by the new variant and the infected person could give it to his entire family within hours, emphasizing the need to follow Covid-19 guidelines such as social distancing, washing hands (with soap and water or sanitizer) and wearing a mask.

91传媒 is currently experiencing a massive outbreak, which originated in Minuwangoda, Gampaha district and is now spreading all over 91传媒. The scientists at the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine and Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of 91传媒 embarked on carrying out whole genomic sequencing of the virus, to determine to see if the current outbreak is due to spread of different strains, if there are certain mutations that result in the rapid spread of the virus and to investigate the relationship between the current circulating virus strains to previous strains circulating in 91传媒.

Key findings of the study are:

  • The current circulating strain is different to the strains that circulated previously.
  • It has the mutation associated with high transmissibility due to high viral loads.
  • The same virus strain is so far responsible for the infections detected in the Minuwangoda, Colombo Municipality area and the Fish market cluster

16 virus strains originating from Brandix, Minuwangoda, the Colombo Municipality area, Beruwala fish market and patients admitted to tertiary care hospitals were subjected to sequencing. Whole genomic sequencing was successful in 13 strains and partial sequencing in 3 strains. 12/13 strains were similar to each other and were of the B.1.42 lineage (clade 20C), suggesting that the virus strains circulating in different places in the country, are of a common origin. 15/16 strains had the D614G mutation, which is associated with high viral load and higher rates of transmissibility. The previous strains that circulated in 91传媒 were of the
B.1, B.2, B 1.1 and B.4 lineages (The Kandakadu cluster viruses were of B.1 lineage), and therefore, the current virus strain is slightly different as it belongs to the B.1.42 lineage.听

The team of scientists that carried out the sequencing work are Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Dr. Deshni Jayathilaka, Dr. Dinuka Ariyaratne, Mr. Laksiri Gomes and Mr. Diyanath Ranasinghe led by Prof. Neelika Malavige. Dr. Ananda Wijewickram and Dr. Malika Karunaratne from NIID, provided the initial samples from the Brandix cluster for sequencing. The funding for sequencing was kindly provided by the World Health Organization and we are extremely grateful for the WHO for providing financial assistance for this endeavor and to Mobitel for providing unlimited high-speed internet for this purpose.
