The at the 91´«Ã½ collaborated with Hutch to host a knowledge-sharing workshop, FUTURE CONNECT, for second-year undergraduates. The workshop was held on Wednesday, January 08, 2025, at Prof. K.A. Munasinghe Hall, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce. This initiative aimed to prepare students for cutting-edge technologies and the demands of the future.

The workshop included sessions on:

  • Data Communications and Networking
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems
  • Data Analysis
  • Soft Skills Development (e.g., CV writing, interview preparation, and career planning)

Prof. Prasad Jayaweera, Dean of the Faculty of Computing, welcomed the Hutch delegates, emphasizing the value of such collaborations. Mr. Mangala Bandara, General Manager of Corporate Affairs at Hutch, explained that the goal is to empower the next generation for the competitive IT industry. Other notable speakers included:

  • Mr. Asanga Ranasinghe, Chief Technology and Information Officer
  • Mr. Sudesh Samarasinghe, Chief Manager Finance

The at the 91´«Ã½ welcomed its new intake with an inauguration ceremony of the orientation program on April 22, 2024. The ceremony was held at the Sri Sumangala Auditorium of the University and was attended by the Acting Vice Chancellor of the 91´«Ã½; Prof. Nilmini Liyanage , the Registrar of the 91´«Ã½; Mr.A.B. Weliwita, the Dean of the Faculty of Computing; Prof. Prasad M. Jayaweera; and Deans of other faculties, Heads of Departments, as well as the academic members of the faculty.

The event was designed to provide an introduction to the university and the faculty for new students. Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nilmini Liyanage , along with Dean, Prof. Prasad M. Jayaweera, addressed the students, sharing insights on the current context of the faculty and the manner in which the faculty and students must move forward with progressive technology to further improve their university lives.

The program gives students an opportunity to learn about the university and the faculty. The Faculty of Computing looks forward to welcoming its new intake and is excited about the journey ahead.

The 91´«Ã½ is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Prasad M. Jayaweera as the new Dean of the Faculty of Computing, effective December 20, 2023.

Professor Prasad M. Jayaweera, currently serving as a Professor of Computer Science at the 91´«Ã½, brings experience to his new role. An affiliated member of the SYSLAB laboratory at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University and Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. Prof. P.M. Jayaweera earned his B.Sc. honors degree in Computer Science from the University of Colombo in 1995. He subsequently completed his Ph.L. and Ph.D. degrees at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University, and the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden in 2002 and 2004, respectively.

Recipient of a Commonwealth Academic Fellowship, Prof. P.M. Jayaweera conducted research at the Informatics Research Centre, University of Reading, United Kingdom. His research work on process modeling, process patterns, and electronic commerce system design has been widely published at national and international forums. Prof. P.M. Jayaweera has actively participated in various research projects through both local and international collaborations.

Previously, he served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Research Center in Information Systems Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science, University of Namur, Belgium, in 2008, and at SYSLAB, Department of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University and Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, in 2007.

The NeuroX project, developed by undergraduates from the 91´«Ã½, was honored as the National Level Runner Up and Provincial Level Winner in the category of Best Innovative Product/Project – University at the SLASSCOM National Ingenuity Awards 2023. The event took place on 15th June at the Shangri-la Hotel.

NeuroX, the line drawing magician, is a device designed to identify neurological disorders using a line drawing technique and a modularized platform. It serves as a tool for detecting neurological diseases with a single stroke of art created using an electronic pen on a graphic tablet. Acting as a mediator between the patient and physician, this device allows the user and the physician to draw conclusions about the user’s health status based on the results obtained.

Chenura Fernando, the team leader of Team IdeaLabs, along with team members Madhawa Maduranga, Romenia Silva, Nishama Vilochana, and Shameema Joonoos, attribute this achievement to the dedication of each team member and the unwavering guidance and support received from the lecturers at the University, especially Dr. Ravimal Bandara, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Ravindra De Silva, the Head of the Department of Computer Science, and Prof. Lasith Gunawardena, Head of the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

The SLASSCOM National Ingenuity Awards 2023 aims to recognize exceptional talent and innovation within the industry. We wholeheartedly congratulate all the deserving winners who have set new standards for the younger generation to aspire to!

The orientation programme of the Faculty of Computing USJ took place on the 12th of June, 2023, at the Senate Board Room. The event was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Prof. Upul Subasinghe, the Acting Vice Chancellor of USJ, Senior Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, former Vice Chancellor of USJ, Prof. Prasad M. Jayaweera, the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Computing, and Mr. A.B. Welivita, the Registrar of USJ.​

A group of 150 students, who have achieved remarkable Z scores in the G.C.E. (A/L) examination, commenced their academic journey towards obtaining Bachelor of Computing Honours Degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information Systems. The Faculty of Computing is the newest and the very first faculty dedicated solely to the emerging computing and related disciplines among public sector universities in 91´«Ã½ and it was established as the 11th faculty of USJ.

The web team and the university community extend their heartfelt congratulations to the newest batch of students as they embark on a journey of knowledge and growth in their Bachelor of Computing Honours degree programs.

Marking yet another momentous occasion in history, the newly established is fully equipped to commence its academic endeavors with the inaugural intakes for Bachelor of Computing Honours degree programs in Computer Science, Software Engineering and Information Systems.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place on the 12th of June, 2023 at the Senate Board Room from 9.a.m. onwards, signifying a truly momentous occasion in the history of USJ. The event will be graced by the distinguished Chief Guest, Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission, and the esteemed guests, Prof. Upul Subasinghe, the Acting Vice Chancellor of USJ, Senior Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, former Vice Chancellor of USJ, Prof. Prasad M. Jayaweera, the Acting Dean of Faculty of Computing, and Mr. A.B. Welivita, the Registrar of USJ.

Furthermore, Prof. Saman K. Halgamuge of the University of Melbourne, an eminent academic and a leading senior researcher in AI and Machine Learning, and Mr. Ashique M Ali, the Chairman of the 91´«Ã½ Association for Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM), representing the local IT/BPM sector, will also dignify the inauguration ceremony.

In total, 150 undergraduates who have obtained higher Z scores from the G.C.E. (A/L) examinations are set to commence their academic activities in three distinct study programs, leading to Bachelor of Computing Honours Degrees offered by the Faculty of Computing, USJ.
