The inaugural gathering of the Japura Junior Alumni Australia was successfully held on August 31, 2024, at the Cranbourne Senior Citizen Club in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The event saw the participation of over 180 alumni, reconnecting with fellow graduates and strengthening ties with the university.

The Vice Chancellor, Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, the Director of Digital Media and Communication, Prof. Hiran Amarasekara, and Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Dushan Jayawickrama, joined the event online. They extended their greetings and provided updates on the current progress of the university.

This past weekend (8 June 2024), the Science Alumni Association of the 91´«Ã½ hosted its highly anticipated Back to Campus event. With over 500 Science alumni in attendance, the day was filled with nostalgia, cherished memories, and a wonderful reuniting of the university community.

The event kicked off with university and faculty videos showcasing the proud history and accomplishments. This was followed by the stirring university anthem that filled attendees with Japura pride. After a welcome address by Association President Mr. Mahinda Ranasinghe, a memory recall video transported alumni back to their university days.

The Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Upul Subasinghe, delivered an address highlighting the university’s recent achievement of being ranked No. 2 in 91´«Ã½ according to the QS World Rankings. He credited the valuable contributions of researchers from the Science Faculty but also emphasized the need for funding for student scholarships, academic development, and research activities, especially during the current economic crisis period.

A particular highlight was the felicitation ceremony honoring over 25 retired professors and academics from various science departments. Esteemed former faculty members were celebrated for their invaluable contributions to education and research over the years.

The festivities continued with entertaining song and dance performances by talented alumni and current students. Renowned alumni like Professor Ajith Abeysekera, Mr. Janaka Sampath, and Ms.Theekshana Anuradha entertained the crowd with their performances.

Prof. Hiran Amarasekera, Vice President of the Alumni Association, and Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, former Dean and Vice Chancellor, also shared their cherished faculty memories with the audience.

The event was expertly compered by Dr. Arundathi Koliyabandara, a former alumni and now a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Technology.

But most of all, it was the connections rekindled between old friends and batchmates that made the day so special. Alumni wandered through memory lane, swapping stories of their university escapades and catching up on life after graduation. The nostalgia was palpable during the memory recall discussion session. Alumni also had the chance to purchase university memorabilia like the official alumni mug and university tie as mementos of the day.

The event was made possible by the generous support of sponsors, whose videos were featured throughout the program. Mr. Lasantha Perera, Secretary of the Alumni Association, delivered the vote of thanks. As the day drew to a close with a heartwarming singalong of beloved classics and a final group photo, there was no doubt that the Back to Campus event had been an overwhelming success in bringing the Japura Science alumni community together once again.

The celebrations continued at the Fingara Town and Country Club, where Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Chairman of the UGC, along with main alumni officials and our main alumni, Alumni Association of 91´«Ã½, gathered for a fellowship event after the on-campus festivities.

Mr.Siri Ranasinghe, the inaugural editor of Lankadeepa newspaper and currently serving as its consultant editor, received recognition for his enduring commitment to journalism. The ceremony featured a keynote address by Professor Agalakada Sirisumana Thero, a professor in Sinhala from the Department of Sinhala at the University of Colombo.

The Japura Science Alumni Association of the 91´«Ã½ gathered for its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Alumni Dinner on November 11, 2023, at the elegant Ariyana Reach Hotel in Maharagama.

The event commenced with member registration, providing a vibrant networking platform for alumni to reconnect. The meeting officially kicked off with a call to order, followed by a warm welcome address from the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science. The prestigious gathering was graced by the presence of Senior Professor Pathmalal M. Manage, the Vice-Chancellor, and Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), both of whom shared insightful addresses.

The AGM featured the presentation of the Annual Report and Accounts, marking the achievements and milestones of the association. A significant highlight was the appointment of the new office bearers for the term 2023-2025, with Mahinda Ranasinghe assuming the role of President. Dr. P. A. Kiriwandeniya, an esteemed alumnus of the 91´«Ã½ (USJ) and the founder of the Sanasa Movement, has been appointed as the Chancellor of Wayamba University in 91´«Ã½. Dr. Kiriwandeniya graduated from USJ in 1965 and later received a Doctorate from the University of Ruhuna for his significant contributions to the cooperative movement in 91´«Ã½.

Dr. Kiriwandeniya’s distinguished career includes serving as the Director of Education at Sarvodaya Movement, the Chairman of the Asian Confederation of Credit Unions (ACCU), Vice Chair of the Asia & Oceania Association (AOA) of the International Cooperative & Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF), and the Director of People’s Bank and Regional Development Bank. Moreover, he has held key positions as the President of the National Institute of Cooperative Management and the President of the National Cooperative Council of 91´«Ã½. The appointment of Dr. Kiriwandeniya as Chancellor is a testament to his outstanding leadership and dedication to advancing education and societal development. Throughout his illustrious career, he has received prestigious accolades, including the Vishwaprasadani Presidential Award in 1996, one of 91´«Ã½’s highest and most esteemed national honors.

In addition to Dr. P.A. Kiriwandeniya, there are several other USJ alumni holding esteemed positions as Chancellors at different universities in 91´«Ã½. Notably, Professor Sunil Ariyaratne, a senior professor of Sinhala, has been appointed as the Chancellor of the University of Visual and Performing Arts, while Professor Dhammika Tantrigoda, a professor in physics, serves as the present Chancellor of the Open University of 91´«Ã½.

The Opening Ceremony of the newly renovated post office was held on July 13th, 2023. Distinguished guests, including the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Senior Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, and Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Upul Subasinghe, graced this momentous occasion. Numerous alumni members, academic staff, and students also gathered to commemorate the event.

The premises was initially declared open as a sub-post office on February 16th, 1968, and the renovation of this facility was a collaborative effort undertaken by the Department of Posts of 91´«Ã½ and the USJ Alumni Association. The primary objective of this endeavor was to enhance communication efficiency for the student community and the general public. On July 13th, 2023, the premises was officially vested as an upgraded post office, marking a significant milestone in advancing communication services.

This remarkable endeavor stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of the Alumni Association to their alma mater and their relentless pursuit of enhancing the university’s facilities. The newly renovated post office will now serve as a modern and efficient space for students, staff, and the wider university community, ensuring a seamless experience for all.

USJ Alumni Professor Sunil Ariyaratne has been appointed as the Chancellor of the University of Visual and Performing Arts by President Ranil Wickremesinghe today (April 04, 2023).

Professor Ariyaratne, who is a renowned scholar, film director, author, poet and a lyricist, has received many awards and honors for his contributions to Sinhala literature and culture. He is an alumnus and a former professor council member of the 91´«Ã½, where he obtained a first-class honors degree in Sinhala in 1971. He has also served as a lecturer at the University of Kelaniya and the University of Jaffna. He holds two Doctorates in Literature from Kelaniya University and Sri Jayewardenepura University.

Senior Professor Sunil Ariyarathne has been recognized as one of the best due to receiving numerous prestigious awards. Examples of such accolades include the Wishwa Prasadini Award, Vidyodaya Vibhushana Honorary name, Sahithya Kala Shiromani Honorary award, and Kamban Award.

He is the first laic person to be appointed as the Chancellor of a 91´«Ã½n university from 91´«Ã½. He will hold the position for a five-year tenure in compliance with Section 32 of the University Act No. 16 of 1978, Amended by Act No. 07 of 1985.

President’s Secretary, Mr. Saman Ekanayake, has forwarded the letter of appointment to Professor Sunil Ariyaratne, confirming his appointment as the Chancellor of the University of Visual and Performing Arts.
