1873 – Origin Vidyodaya Pirivena as a Centre of Oriental Learning 鈥揤enerable Hikkaduwe听 Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thero
1959 – University status, First VC Venerable Welivitiye Soratha Nayaka Thero
1960 – Introduction of Management degrees to the SL University System
1962 – Establishing the 1st Applied Sciences Faculty in SL University System
1966 – Admission of Female Students to the University
1966 – Reorganization of the Faculty of Arts combining 4 Faculties
1972 – Conversion to Vidyodaya Campus of the University of Ceylon
1972 – Establishing the 1st Management Faculty (FMSC) in SL University 听 System.
1973 – Converting Faculty of Science to Faculty of Applied Sciences.
1979 – Regaining independent University status and Renaming as USJP
1979 – Establishment of the External Degrees Unit to provide distance education
1986 – Establishment of Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) to offer PG degrees in Business and Public Administration
1993 – Establishment of the Faculty of Medical Sciences to provide degree programs in Medicine, Nursing and Allied Sciences
1996 – Establishment of the Faculty of Graduate Studies as the umbrella organization to offer PG degrees
2011 – Renaming the Faculty of Arts as the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
2011 – Establishment of the External Degrees and Extension Course Unit expanding the scope of activities of the External Degrees Unit
2012 -Becoming the SL University with the largest student population
2016 -Establishment of the Faculty of Technology and Faculty of Engineering
2016 -Upgrading of the Research and Publication Unit to Research Council status
